It actually wouldn't be that hard for Smilin' Willy to make the Win9x/Dos stuff obselete. Look what they are doing to the NT4 certified technicians. Bye-bye.
Windows ME (Win 98 Third Edition) is promising to get rid of more Dos stuff, and include the "tweaked" networking from 2k. Once Bill merges Win ME with Windows NT 2000, all that 9x stuff will be gone, and users forced to upgrade. At this point he can change the API, and at the same time he can thwart the efforts of Samba, since the Win ME/NT 2000 protocols for filesharing are so obfuscated and murky. This could easily happen within 1-2 years.

Please don't suggest f*cked hardware, thats what Windows NT users say every day when thier beloved OS BSOD's on them. Also, most Linux users are more hardware savvy than the Windows crowd.

    Case in point:
I have a freaky dual P120 with 64mb of ram in 6 simm slots. It has 4 pci and 4 isa (1 shared), it has no onboard ide or floppy controllers.
    PCI:
    power card
    SB PCI128
    Promise Ultra66
    16mb Riva TNT card

    ISA:
    floppy/ide/serial/parallel all in one card
56k USR modem (not pnp or winmodem)
    Realtek 8019 combo nic (yuck)

Windows NT 4.0 Ntdetect locks up tighter than a virgin at bible camp. After I ripped every card except the video (which I had to replace with a 2 mb S3 card) it booted. As soon as either the Realtek nic OR the Ultra66 was plugged in, it locks at Ntdetect.
Help forums full of NT Wizards recommended a different NIC and sending back the Ultra66 because obviously it is faulty (I was trying to use the official Promise drivers exactly following thier directions, NT told me the card was not in my system when installing it with the OS)
Funny thing is that same setup is running Linux 2.2.15 just great!
    (Distribution Slackware 7 + updates)

"It must be the hardware." is a last resort Windiot explanation.
