Well, there are plenty of good names if one is creative. The big mistake is thinking that you can't just create a new word for you business. I don't think there was ever a Novell in the English language or a Dell, other than the proper name. Just pick a 2 or 3 letter anacronym and sooner or later it will catch on and become as familiar as HP or IBM.
I don't know. I think Syndic has a pretty nice ring to it. It's a HELL of a lot better than the stupid name my software company finally decided upon (after spending $1mil on a name consultant). I'm not even going to tell you the name, because I don't want to get in trouble here at work, but I will let you guess. Our ERP software competes with Great Plains. Good Luck guessing!
Very, very good post. That's the first post on slashdot I've ever seen with footnotes. We should frame this post and make it required reading for any new slashdot posters.
Its a bummer too because etoys does have that really set of commercials. The ones with the cool music and the parents that find gift ideas for their children by watching their interests, then going to etoys and then going to etoys and typing in whatever comes to their head. Oh well, I won't be shopping there now. What they did was "just plain evil, man".
Once again it is time to bring out thehangingtree.com for a public hanging of the executives and lawyers of etoys!
First of all, what's up with the bold print. We understand that your "mad as hell and not going to take it anymore", but do you need to shout at us?
Also, how in any way does this hurt Linux. It is just another distribution point for Linux. If a handful of users convert to Linux because it comes with quake III, then the trouble was well worth it.
Maybe every game should come with it's own distribution. How cool would that be? Why not I mean, how does it hurt anything? How funny would it be if Microsoft included Windows with every program they sold? At least you would never lose a copy!
If you don't like multi-player networked battles, then quake is just not your cup of tea. There's no reason why everybody has to like the same types of games. But some people just enjoy committing virtual bloodbath/execution style murders over and over from the comfort of their own home:)
Oh yeah, that would be so cool. In fact, I would venture to say it might be the most popular distro of all time! For Linux to gain mindshare (and corresponding marketshare), we need to make it the best game platform out there. We really can't settle for being a close second to Windows 98 or even on par with them.
We can't rest until every game runs a little better, a little faster, a little more reliably on Linux.
We can't rest until games start coming out a little earlier on linux than windows.
And we can't rest until Linux finally has unique game titles that do NOT exist on Windows.
I think it's rather presumptuous to assume that the fall of Microsoft would throw this country into a huge depression. As huge and as important a company it is, there is always another waiting in the background to seize the day. Probably Sun Microsystems would be my guess if Microsoft were ever to really falter.
You can believe in one thing for sure: a lawyer's greed. As long as they are getting paid by the hour they will stretch this thing out as long as possible!
Hell, this would just make Microsoft so much stronger and more focused on each individual aspect of the software industry. I would venture to guess that the value of the (combined) stock would double within two years of the split.
If Amazon wins this lawsuit I'm pulling up my stakes and finally leaving this god-forsaken, misguided country to the wild dogs that have run all over it. I really think Shakespeare had it right when he said, "First thing we should do is kill all the lawyers." Now I'm gonna have to move to Antigua damn it! How can Amazon have the balls to think it rights to a one-click purchase! That is just pure stupidity any way you shake it. I'm gonna patent the no-click purchase. Just put in your credit card number and I'm going to just start billing it until its credit limit is exceeded. How much do you think that patent is worth? Maybe 15-20 with good behavior???
Well, I gave Perl its due in my message above. However, after having used the two, I would have to choose java servlets over pearl for any meaningful projects.
I will say that two things I just hate about java are Strings and Doubles (AH!). Perl is so much easier when trying to manipulate these things. However, I've found free third-party libraries, at least that provide all RegEx Perl functionality in Java, and that's a big win there!
Some of these are pretty classic though. I love that office 2000 parody! And the story about the woman sueing her employer for carpel because of mastubating too much actually says a LOT more about this society than most social commentaries.
What did you expect when Intel is finally getting some decent pressure from the folks over at AMD. It is amazing what can happen in 2 years in this business. Now intel is racing to catch up to the Athlon (AMD) and creating buggy products in their hurry.
Maybe AMD will be kind enough to license their chip technology to intel so they can create Athlon compatible chips in hopes of keeping up:)
No way... Microsoft will never relinquish their stranglehold on their market. They will either go down in the deep, deep flames or continue lording over the rest of us. They are too smart and will weasil their way out of this little predicament. Don't expect the government to bail us out of this problem. Only by creating superior products can we defeat this monstrosity.
Oh yeah, you are right. The serial numbers are what threw me off. How the hell would you genetically engineer a serial number on an animal??
Are you absolutely sure though, because weren't they just like the robots that the Blade Runner was trying to kill; that is robots, and not simply genetically engineered humans.
Now I'm thinking I was right initially. The snakes were robotic, same as the androids. If they were GE snakes, then why would they much such a big deal about the difference between these snakes and real ones (which were incredibly rare).
Has anybody tried the new version of JBuilder that just came out? Would you recommend the project? I've heard it's pretty buggy. But then I've really heard some horror stories about visual cafe, especially the enterprise edition!
From someone coming from a C, C++, VB, and Perl background, I will tell you that java is fantastic because it has a comprehensive set of libraries (network, gui, encryption, database, web) that is standard across all platforms. And I think this is the reason it is successful and will just become more successful. All that is left is to make sure that java is supported on EVERY platform equally well. My thinking is that a OS shouldn't even ship until there is a fully functioning JRE for it.
If you want to see the power of java servlets, check out my site, a fully functioning multi-player blackjack game that can support a 1000 simultaneous users. I wrote it in a week. Try that with any other language!
By the way, I know you could do it in Perl; I love Perl, but java servlets are just so much more efficient and doesn't hog as much memory. Also, my code is neatly organized into sensible objects. That just never seems to happen with my Perl code.

I don't get it. It all looks pretty confusing. Like a giant mish-mesh to me!
Why would anybody want so much of this blowhard?

This was exactly was I was thinking when I read this article as well... hmmm...

I'll add one more...
A new ai-based patent generator that automatically gleens information off the net, generates patents from it, and submits it to the patent office.
Damn, why aren't I an IBM executive!! We'd make a killing, and absolute killing!
People never expect the Spanish Inquisition!@!
Yes, and for every 1 bit of music, there will be 4 bits of crypto to insure that Joe User doesn't even think of pirating it... Pretty sad!

I think the ide is pretty decent. If rational removes all the ms specific stuff, that would be great! Come back into the fold, J++!
