Wow... I am amazed at how quick the users of slashdot these days are to try and get a dig at Microsoft. Well mabey Apple did release a product that erases everyting you have on your computer, but remember that time when Microsoft put out a product that had a security hole and it took them at least 2 days to fix it. I am sorry but I feel as if you are using the Chewbacca defense here.
I am not trying to say I agree with everything Microsoft does and that they are perfect, because they are not. But I can't remember the last time I installed a Microsoft product that removed all the contents of my hard drive. Mabey we should be discussing how this could be avoided in the future. Like a sandbox for installers so they have to ask for permission to do things and if they seem loopy to the sandbox it asks you for permission for them.

If you look at the bandwidth meter on www.kernel.org whenever there is a release, the bandwidth utilization would lead me to believe that quite a few people in the real world compile the kernel. Aside from that I am sure there are at least a couple of "real world" c/c++ development servers out there in the world running linux. Since when is compiling code not a good benchmark for that type of box? I am sorry but I think you might want to reconsider your view of the real world.

At the rate people are signing onto the Internet for the first time every day news via television will be less and less important. On the net you don't have to wait around till the TV station has scheduled the news to be on. Just hit the news site(s) you like the most and get some news.

Sure you don't have the guarantee that the news is right, but there seems to be a much better chance of it. Especially when you start going to sites that have public discussion forums. You get enough people discussing a topic and the "truth" is bound to come out. You also have the ability to check the story against other sites, see what they have to say about it.

And I may be mistaken and if so somebody berate me, but, I think you can get a package that is only for outgoing calls.
Hell, you can even setup groups on most cellphones now so you wouldn't even know somebody was calling unless you told it to ring for that person. I am sorry but sitting in my car in a parking lot in the middle of winter making a call is much more comfortable than standing in a phone booth looking at my nice warm car waiting for the call to be over.

I had a similar when I was driving around town earlier, I probably should have been paying attention to the road.... bah! I was trying to figure out how such a system would be implemented and there are several hurdles. When the system is small is when it would be it's weakest, as the large (high bandwidth, high uptime) nodes would have to keep track of quite a bit of small nodes. As time went on and the technology got more popular the load would be distributed quite a bit more. But where to store all the data? In ram, no... too much of a burden on the large node, in dbms?, a database, I guess you could require the user to install MySQL or something like that to use the service, but that is kinda bulky.

As far as keeping traffic down, you only let large nodes talk to large nodes, passing along search requests if they don't have matches for the material being requested. I figure do a first pass search that returns info on the large node right above a small node if found and allow the small node to re-request the search be run past the large node if it isn't happy with the results. Then have the large node pass on the request to other large nodes it knows of.

I duno, there are quite a few things that need to be figured out for that to work but I belive that it is a much better model. If anybody is interested in throwing ideas back and forth please feel free to e-mail me! I would love to discuss the idea and mabey do some implementing.

If not... well, time to go back to college eating practices for awhile ;) MMMM... ramen.
But seriously were it me I would ask them, if they say no, turn in notice and start working on the project yourself. If they need the client bad enough they will pay you for a licence to the software and you make out even better. Mabey make them aware of how long you spent doing it yourself and tell them it will take that long again if you do it for them and offer them a licence of the one you have created.
