So the fix for this is to simply prohibit the government from using internet technology?

Keep in mind, these laws don't say anything about what the public should use, they only specify open formats for the government to use.

He's Australian. He's not American. He never committed any crime in the US, because he HAS NEVER BEEN HERE.

The fact that he's here now is an example of the utter failure of the Australian government, as the only appropriate response for them should have been "You want us to send one of our citizens to you, when he's never left the country? Um, no. Get stuffed."

The only positive outcome this could possibly have is the fall of an Australian government that is clearly out of touch with its responsibilities to Australia's citizens.

I don't deploy "enterprise" drives, they're overpriced, and the few I did install years ago proved to be less reliable than "consumer" drives. My real world experience is that the "consumer" drives are generally reliable, I just plan on a 2-3 year replacement schedule.

I can't disagree with RAID being fallible depending on what takes out the drive, though.

Actually, the power plant/large coal burning operation scrubbers that have been installed only take out the other pollutants, not the carbon dioxide.

One theory has it that they may actually be making the greenhouse problem worse, because the particulates were having a moderating effect on the CO2 emissions. (That's not to say that the scrubbers should be turned off, the particulates had their own nasty effects, but the scrubbers aren't an attempt to do anything about the greenhouse problem.)

Actually, it's fairly pointless for Firefox to ask that these days.

Javascript lets sites do an end-run around form submission, and start sending data before you click anything. And there's no warning about that.

I'd say the dialog about submitting a form actually does more harm than good now, because a user will think that if they check the box, they'll be warned every time something is going to be sent from a text box to the internet, and it's not true.

My guess would be that this is wrong.

Grunts on the ground over there only get a small portion of the data - they don't have an objective opinion, because they can't. They have an incomplete data set, and an agenda.

Their data should be taken into account, but should certainly not take precedence over someone's opinion when they have an opportunity for a much broader and less biased picture of the events.

In any case, once you look at that data, you see that the Iraqis who want us there are the Kurds (very understandably) and the warlords we're backing. Pretty much everybody else old enough to know the difference (and many of the children) don't want us there.

It's kind of like with Bush. I want him gone, but I'd still do my best to sabotage another country that invaded to remove him.

    That's a good one.

The US lost in Vietnam. We lost militarily, and we lost in terms of having a just cause to even be there in the first place.

The only victory was when the people realized the mistake and forced the military to stop fighting a war that we would never win. Could we have "won" Vietnam? Sure, if we wanted to bring in the nukes - but nobody wins THAT world war.

And we're looking at the same thing in Iraq. It's another tar baby that we shouldn't have touched, and the best outcome we can hope for is to cut our losses and get out now.

Oh, and the book? It's a right-wing propaganda piece, written to undermine the lessons this country learned from the Vietnam war - those being, don't fight an unwinable war, and don't fight a war when you have no reason to fight a war.

And I am American, I'm not a college student, I have friends who have been in Iraq in both wars, and most of them agree - we aren't winning this one, and we can't win this one.

Well, the next step that should be taken if this can be defeated is to prohibit federal access to the different states' ID systems.

And then, we need to remove the concept that a state should be allowed to issue an ID card at all. A driving license should be a non-photo card, without identifying data, that proves that you are qualified to exercise your right to drive a vehicle and have paid the appropriate tax.

But laws being passed for large companies A, B, and C means that small business A, B, C, D, and E are still screwed by the taxes, and individuals A through Z are equally screwed, because they have to make up the difference.

And doing this by secret negotiation makes it even worse - the people have no way to tell their representatives to vote one way or the other on the deal, because they don't know it's going on.

Ultimately, it's difficult to fix, because the large companies pushing for these deals have the threat of "we'll go somewhere else where they will give us these dirty backroom deals if you won't".

Which means it really needs to be fixed at the national level, with prohibitions on states making deals like this - and if anything falls under the interstate commerce clause, this does. And, to prevent this happening internationally, we can at least lock companies out of the US market if they use these tactics in other countries, and push for treaties prohibiting this internationally.

No 3rd party apps? I can't live with it. There's no point in me paying that much money for this phone - for me, it turns a $600 phone into a $50 phone. I'm betting it doesn't have a business mileage log, I bet it doesn't have a good expense tracker, and I bet it doesn't have FileMaker Pro. I want my local traffic cam widget, and I'd really like to hack iChat so it uses data traffic instead of SMS.

Apple REALLY needs to back down from this one, quickly and loudly.

As for Jobs - he needs to go. I wasn't in favor of his return, he's made some very stupid decisions, and Apple got lucky with sales. His obsession with secrecy costs Apple customers - it's hard to get a large company to buy without a future product roadmap. The treatment of resellers has gotten far worse with Jobs, it's hard to sell iPods or computers when you can't get them, but the Apple Store across town has them in stock. Want a custom engraved iPod? I used to be able to sell you one. Now, I can only point to the Apple Store.
