I would love to see how the right to counsel is being taken away. As far as I can tell, the only 'right' being taken away is that of privacy, which is automatically given up when you're a federal detainee. You should have no reasonable expectation of privacy.

Here's the scenario: You talk to your lawyer, being honest with him, to discuss your methods of defense. As of yesterday he must tell the authorities what you said, and not tell you that he is doing so.
In an adversarial justice system, such as we have, it is the responsibility of the Crown (government) to prove - beyond a reasonable doubt - your guilt. But with these new laws - your lawyer gets to tell the government details *retroactively* about your confession to him. It not only covers matters before the court, but past crimes as well. Once the door is open - it's wide open.
Essentially, you testified against yourself by assuming client-solicitor confidentially.

I've always found the WatchGuard series works well. Especially the SOHO product.
Sure, an old PC with *nix on it is cheaper, but this is quieter and requires less power. It's got a browser configurable setup, serves DHCP, allows for 10 users expandable to 50 users (4 ports, but you can daisy chain another hub off it) and is self updating.
A pretty cool unit for a home network. They also sell units for 100+ users, for small to mid size offices.
As an aside, since we tech types aren't unionized, what do you think about a strike? Like all the NB and BC nurses, Vancouver transit workers, etc?
We geek tend to not speak our minds out loud (exchanging packets in meatspace), but can you imagine every single server and workstation in North America not working for month end? "Oops, they are doing a diagnostic/crashed and will have to be restored from tape/I didn't know what that button did."
Wouldn't that draw the attention of the masses to what we feel are unjust and frankly, idiotic laws?
