    Sadly, I do live in a canyon, or at least a valley. There's exactly 1 station I could get at low quality with a directional antenna - none with a normal antenna. Oh, well, maybe I'll live someplace flat next time.

    Big difference between the 1% and the .01%.

    The 1% has a lot of doctors/dentists, lawyers, accountants, engineers, educated people who are going to push their kids to get educated.

    To put it a different way, the 1% value education because for the most part it's why they're the 1%. The values you pass to your kids matter far more than the money.

    The idea that people have "gender" different from their obvious sex is simply progressive bullshit. Not feeling particularly masculine doesn't make you not a man. And one's sexual fetishes are best kept private.

    Except the EU has stated you want access then you have to be a part of it.

    Britain will trade with the EU just as most other nations do. This is not a bad thing. Britain remains a top-10 world economy. There will of course be turbulence until all the new trade treaties settle, but that's a small price to pay for sovereignty. Certainly lower than the price paid in centuries past to achieve sovereignty of the common man.

    Regaining sovereignty was not dumb. Stopping unlimited immigration was not dumb. Nor is is dumb in America that we're doing the same. Sucks the guys you have to vote for to achieve these objectives, but no one better is in the right.

    The top speed is mostly limited by the battery life - top speed goes with the cube root of horsepower. Increase the top speed by 10% and your "top speed battery life" drops by 30%. Teslas are great toys for US roads, but a joke on the Autobahn.

    The dollar is doing well. it would be much more honest to compare the pound to the euro in that not so subtle piece of advocacy.

    The Pound is doing OK as well. 1 USD = 0.816 GBP. Pretty much matching the old pricing. This is just a price increase by Apple. It now matches the way games tend to be priced on Steam: the same number of dollars, pounds, and euros for the game.

    What progressive nonsense. Born with a dick? Man. You won't ever be gestating babies. You can choose to be a particularly effeminate man, a more typical man, or a hyper-masculine man. You might prefer activities traditionally done by women, or those of men - hey, it's a modern world, do whatever. The tribe won't die out because we allowed the women to do dangerous things. But you remain a man.

    You clearly don't work in software development on the Left Coast. And if you'd rather compete with someone making under $30k in India rather than the same guy making over $80k here (typical for my industry), you're pretty bad at math.

    What bullshit. If you have a dick and a y chromosome, you're a man. If mental illness makes it difficult to cope, well, get professional help (and many do, of course, but we can't fix the mental illness).

  19. Goldman Sacs does OK, though. There have been plenty of systems that beat the market over the years, but there are no old systems (well, legal ones). Most people are idiots, of course, but hire enough math PhDs and throw them at a math problem, and you'll make interesting discoveries. That time has largely passed now, because all the pattern detection and so on is itself automated, gaming the pattern detection is automated, gaming the bots that game the pattern detection is automated ... it's trolls all the way down now.

    The reality is clear. It sucks to have a mistaken belief about reality that interferes with your daily life, but that doesn't change the reality. Also, realty is rarely what we want it to be, but retreat from reality in the face of that is unhealthy - heck, it's the source of a wide array of mental illnesses.

    Does any of it matter? She wants to be referred to as "she", so unless you have some particular reason to be a asshat towards her why not just do it?

    When talking to him directly? Sure, it's only polite to call him "her". Heck, I've been to enough cons - if someone wants to be a Klingon ship captain, sure, I'll play along if they're there and in costume. But they still aren't Klingon, and I'm not going to think of them as Klingon, or refer to them that way in normal conversation.

    There's a quote sometimes attributed to Lincoln: "How many legs does a dog have if you call a tail a leg? Four - doesn't matter what you call it, it's not a leg".

    My sympathy towards anyone with a mistake belief about reality that interferes with their daily life - psychoses suck. But I'm not going to participate in their reality.

    Sure, but of all the movies you've watched, in any format, in the past 3 years, how many do your kids watch continuously like that? Streaming is fine for that vast majority that only need to be watched once. DVD (or ripped copy thereof) for the rest.

    Really? You'd file an insurance claim if some DVDs were stolen, and expect the claim would actually be paid? Sounds like an odd strategy. No sure bets in life, except death at the end.

    What I worry about is the case where you can't replace what was lost, because no one has distribution rights. If the DVDs were ever made, then they'll still be there on the used market (though plenty of silly stuff is $100+ per DVD used, just because not many DVDs were ever made).

  25. Your wiki link doesn't dispute anything I said. You're just using technical terms oddly, so we're not communicating well. Quant work is fundamentally statistical analysis of prices, quite separate from the guys who read annual reports. Both areas of work have of course been automated. Short term vs long term vs HFT is more about gaming and counter-gaming these quantitative models. And it was never respectable.
