My point is you can't have one character have a bonus / power / spell which is overpowered, and it may not be obvious immediately. For instance, I remember that back in the days of 2nd Ed 40k you could fit a Conversion field to a character. As a Space Marine, this gives you (on D6) a (unmodifiable) 4+ and two 3+ saves against the basic weaponry of every other race in the game (4+ shield, 3+ armour, 3+ toughness). Not only did the 4+ improve your chances of completely ignoring damage by 50%, but it also offered the possibility of blinding unprotected troops within (some) inches. Space Marines are immune to blindness, so it mattered not if you had him standing in a squad. The gameplay mechanics weren't tested enough to set the cost of the gear appropriately for its effectiveness.
TL:DR; Balance may not be immediately apparent in complex rule systems. Chess is easy, as movements and abilities are pre-defined for both sides. Not so when there are hundreds of variables.

The jumping mouse cursor was diagnosed to imminent battery failure at my last place of work. We had around 200 Dell Latitude laptops, various models, all exhibit the same behaviour. Replacing the battery resolved the issue.

We're talking about a (no longer) hypothetical situation where the probability of a "long and happy life" is rapidly accelerating towards 0. If I was involved in a horrific motorway accident and I had massive injuries from which I could not recover, and there was another person involved who could benefit from my faster-than-would-normally-be death, then I say withhold treatment and harvest my gizzards. I'd expect the same from any rational and humanitarian human being. The same if it were me on the aircraft; I can't say I would certainly attempt to retake the plane, but I'd hope that someone on the ground was sane enough to limit the loss of life in the scenario as much as they could, instead of letting a significantly larger number of people die because of some misguided sense of "all life is sacred, so we can't kill anyone in any circumstances."

That defies logic. In a situation where you have two outcomes, neither of which favourable, the lesser of the two should be sought. I understand that the whole "sacrifice one to save many" argument has been done ad nauseum, but it blows my mind that in a situation where you have a hijacked plane on a collision course with any populated area that it would be illegal to destroy the aircraft before it hits its target.
In my eyes, the lack of action is the bigger infraction of your constitution: You say human dignity is inviolable, yet you criminalise the limitation of loss of life. That's just stoopid.
EDIT: If the passengers on the plane don't have the guts or common decency to try and save those who the plane is targetted at, as well as themselves, they deserve to be fired upon. Dead is dead; At that point, you have as much to lose as the hijackers. Quick prayer (if that's your thing) and get Medieval on their ass with the First Aid oxygen tank in the overhead storage (usually located above a red triangle on the cabin sides, FYI). Just my opinion.

He's spent 8 years fearing that he'll be taken away from his home and family and deposited into a federal prison for up to 50 years (you may know them as "Federal PMITA prison").
"A severe punishment that is obviously inflicted in wholly arbitrary fashion." He is accused of causing $700,000 of damage to computer systems belonging to NASA and the american military. These were peripheral systems, or systems not connected to secure networks, often computers located in accommodation as opposed to secure buildings.
"A severe punishment that is clearly and totally rejected throughout society." 50 years. PMITA prison. Nerdy kid with poor social interaction. Think about it.

A fine is necessary. 6 months in minimum security is necessary. 12 months is pretty harsh; Nobody died, was harmed, or lost anything (except the Admins may have lost their dignity / credibility). He's spent 8 years fearing for his well-being, and is considering suicide. What more does he have to lose?
I've found exactly the same as this. I've not bought or downloaded any new movies songs, or consumed any media from Big4 or Hollywood in a long time. No doubt that's because I'm a scurvy sea-dog, though.
