The last time I had the problem of reinstalling XP while only having an old install media, I contacted MS to ask them to make an XP download available to me.
All I got was the over-the-phone equivalent of a blank stare, and a total lack of understanding over why they should have such a service for paying customers.
I am maintaining the machine as unpaid work for my Kollegium. When it fails I will probably just replace that complex system with a quick simple gateway in an hour or two. My current course of action is designed to minimize the effort I put in until I actually have to do something:).
We have an old server in the basement with a very custom setup, which I would rather not mess with. It is internet gateway for 300 people, so I would rather not take out of production to play with it.
It has a 3-way RAID 1 (linux software raid), so it will take 3 disk failures for the storage to die. In fact, one of the disks have failed already, but since it still have 2-way RAID it I see no reason to do anything about it:).
The point: Using 3-way RAID is a good insurance for a long lifespan without maintainance:).
Because when released it will reduce the profit from their certificate signing business, as people can get end-to-end public key encryption just by updating their DNS entry.
An implementation in a programming language is the a way to define a function mathematically.
That is what a programming language is - a way to precisely define an algorithm.
But C is a low-level language, and therefore maybe a bad choice for function definitions. Instead, in my experience, implementing an algorithm in a high-level functional language like Haskell will often result in a beautiful and readable mathematical function definition.
So you mean that product specs get reported more accurately, using internationally recognized and consistent units, once they have been vetted by marketing.
Since they would not be patenting "simple" software anyway, since "simple" things are probably not patentable anyway, I read that as saying that they just want to allow software patents...
Nobel prices in the sciences are usually very conservative. I don't think we will not see a Nobel price for dark matter until the responsible particle(s) has been discovered.
Yes, Silly physicist PhDs doing unneccesary experiments. They could have been told the result of the experiment just by asking a random commenter on Slashdot.:)
Because our understanding of physics is so consistent that it is a waste of time to test the cornercases of our theories *cough*quantum gravity*cough*dark matter*cough*dark energy*cough*
But the Africans do not use cloned copies of a single tree, which is what the Cavendish bananas are. So presumably only a part of the banana palms in Africa will be affected.
So people are not really put in jail for years for victimless crimes like smoking a little pot?
This will mean that one tab can't freeze the whole browser. Which will make the browser feel more responsive.
So the result will probably be feel faster, even on single-core machines.
Not to mention the little detail that (for me at least), Amarok 2 is unable to actually play music...
So I am using mplayer, for now.
Has nobody else read Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul? Don't mess with the god of guild living in the fridge...
Given
a) How easily it is to spoofe an IP address (as described for example at How To Frame a Printer For Copyright Infringement
b) That there is no review involved before disconnection
I wonder how long it will take before all members of the Assembly who voted for this are kicked off the net for copyright infringement...
Which nicely illustrates one reason why this is a silly law.
All very good. But there is no set release date; I wonder when PHP 6 will be released?
They have been working on PHP 6 since at least 2005, and from monitoring announcement etc., I haven't seen any signs that they are nearing a release.

Actually the correct answer is:
No, because in today's USA the brat's parents would sue.
As far as I am aware, other countries are capable of handing this stuff in a reasonable manner.

But Belkin has not even hung him dry. They have not fired the guy, as far as I can tell.
but what does it matter if Perl 6.x is gonna take longer than Duke Nukem Forever to come out?
For the curious, Duke Nukem Forever was announced April 28, 1997, which Perl 6 was announced 19 July 2000.
I will be interesting to see which one will finish first :).
Of course there is also GNU Hurd, which began development in 1990 and is still not production ready...
So you mean that product specs get reported more accurately, using internationally recognized and consistent units, once they have been vetted by marketing.
Then more power to marketing, I say!
It is not a real diamond unless a pristine natural area has been destroyed while producing it.
Ideally the production of a real diamond should also fund child soldiers conducting a small war in Africa.
And of course the diamond should also have been resold by a monopolistic company.
And finally the diamond should be flawed, to show that it is "real" and "natural".
So keep your cheap flawless manufactured diamonds for yourself. You are suppressing the good old traditional ways with soulless technology!
I can't even play YouTube with their latest releases on my AMD64 box.
Youtube changed the video format to H264 for some/most/many of their videos recently. It used to work with swfdec.
In the very latest dev version of swfdec the video works again, but there is no sound.

I wonder when we will see PHP 6 (which will have unicode support).
PHP 6 has been in development forever, but there doesn't seem to be any roadmap online that I can find.
Of course people use incremental backup, like for example rdiff-backup ...

You can already buy a cheap ARM laptop here.
