  1. Remember people... on Golden Rice · · Score: 1

Genetic changes are happening all the time in nature, all by itself, also sometimes across species. The reason why human changes are considered powerfull are because they are directed.
Now, a scientist can introduce a gene into an organism, fx by using a bacteria or virus to deliver it. This happens in nature too. When it happens in nature, there is no control with it. In the case of golden rice it is carefully analyzed, and the gene has a harmless effect.
Caution is good, but what is on display here is paranoia. Scientists cannot with absolute certain say golden rice is harmless, certainty is the realm of religion, but use your common sense!

In this case, instead of feeding these people the rice, perhaps they could extract the beta-carotene and administer it in the form of vitamin pills-- something we're all comfortable with at this point. That way the genetic oddities of the whole food are not in play. Of course, that's not efficient if the food is safe, so who am I to say. Wouldn't it be easier to just grow carrots? I mean, rice? How bland can you get?

Or why doesn't they just eat cake instead?

  6. Re:Source Code Obsession. on Different View Of MS Code Theft · · Score: 1

It's going to be a lot easier to find security holes in Windows if you've got the source code. Of course, in Linux this cuts both ways because the good guys can find and fix them much more easily too, but Microsoft aren't likely to be taking patches any time soon :)

MS has up til now relied on security through obscurity. That could mean that there are parts of the code that are insecure, but have been protected by that obscurity, we don't know.
So now any cracker in the world potentially have access to potentally easily exploidable MS source code, how do you know your windows installation is not wide open? That means that if you want to run a highly secure server, you should NOT be using MS software. (but I guess you wouldn't in the first place anyway, just another brick in the wall... :) )

    Dear Linux Users,

I'm pleased to announce jointly with Microsoft(tm)(r) Corporation
release of Linux 2000 Professional Enterprise.

As you probably already know I'm busy with my family and I already
have full-time job with Transmeta. Thus, it has been necessary for me to
look for some responsible partner who would help me develop Linux.

After extensive search, I have decided upon Microsoft Corporation
which has been known on market for long time from their high quality
    software.

Thus the upcoming Linux 2.4.0 will become Linux 2000(tm)(r).

Pricing will be determined at later time. However, I would like to
take opportunity now to remind people who have unlicensed version of Linux
to delete it from hard disk and then wait until official release of Linux
    2000(tm)(r) will become available.

Effective April 1st 2000, midnight, all older versions of Linux
are illegal under Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

They really can change the license wen they want to under the DMCA, right?
