That's the way OpenOffice was as well. But Java was loaded by default if it was available, which slowed down performance. That behavior should be removed if the Java features aren't commonly used (they aren't) and it gives a big performance hit (it does).

I've found completely the opposite. My laptop worked great with Vista SP2. Moving to 7 SP1 caused me nothing but headaches; it was slower, I started having bluescreens (infrequently), and the interface was a PITA until I finally got around to reverting it to the old style, and even then WLM had to be run in compatibility mode or it would constantly take up a giant part of my taskbar. Vista SP2 is actually really nice by comparison.

I was with you until you started using terms like "leftist thugs." I'm not sure which "leftist thugs" you're talking about, but if you're just generalizing anyone with leftist views and calling them a "thug," you lose quite a bit of credibility. I don't agree with the action these people are taking. The leftists I side with don't victimize the small folk, we advocate for them. I'd prefer you not group us with them.

I think in this case, it's just a bunch of short-sighted kids who want to make a difference. They're just going about it the wrong way. I can't really blame them when, despite the efforts of some really intelligent and good people on all sides, you've got movements like the Tea Party trying their absolute best to make everything into a black-and-white, us-versus-them shouting match.

  11. Re:I am curious what the residents think on Internet Restored In Tripoli As Rebels Take Control · · Score: 1

Really? Because I've been following the coverage on NPR, BBC, and Al Jazeera since about the time it started.

The reactions are mixed, though it seems like there are a lot more people who disliked Quadaffi. Back before Triploi was taken, a reporter who snuck away from his chaperone managed to get an interview with someone who basically said "when the rebels come, they'll all have our support." And a lot of that happened. However, there were a few pockets of die-hard Quadaffi supporters who still resisted.

I think the coverage was pretty good. Al Jazeera especially did a great job (I subscribe to their RSS feed) and BBC had a lot of great coverage as well.

Submitting the evidence to the prosecutor anonymously before the trial takes place is the best solution. Withholding evidence is not only a felony, but really stupid if you want to see these types put away. The prosecutor will figure out how to use it most effectively to take him down, whether that means catching him in a lie or some other method.

  15. Re:You're just a boy on Ask Slashdot: Am I Too Old To Learn New Programming Languages? · · Score: 1

I would recommend the exact opposite. If you're going to learn a language, C# is great and there are a lot of positions for it. Objective C is a bit of a PITA and there's slightly less work for it (except in mobile development), and C++ is just horrifying (I would rather have a job doing COBOL). On the other hand, D (an amazing language) also fills the niche that C++ and Obj-C are trying to fill if you really want to go that route. There's just not a lot of call for it, though; my recommendation is still C# (Java is also fine, but C# is better in a lot of aspects and there's more call for it in the workplace).

  19. Re:It seems good on Reaction To Diablo 3's Always-Online Requirement · · Score: 3, Informative

That's asinine. System requirements exist to give people an idea of what hardware is necessary to play the game. You can still try to play the game on lower hardware requirements, but it might not run very well. It's a physical barrier and they're giving you an idea of what the lowest configuration is. Always-online is just nonsense by Blizzard; it has nothing to do with physical barriers. There's nothing about single player that requires an internet connection EVER. LAN is arguable, I think it's extremely important but obviously Blizzard would rather shaft the customer as usual. Always-on is not a physical barrier, it is a virtual barrier. There could easily be an option on the main screen that says "offline mode" (hell, even Steam and Starcraft II have offline modes, though the former needs to be started in the absence of an internet connection to get to it). The game could easily run without an internet connection if Blizzard just flipped a bit somewhere. But no, they want to give people like me who are often on the move the shaft because they think it will make them a few more dollars. Fuck that. I've already canceled my pre-order. I'll be doing exactly what you said: taking my business elsewhere.
