That's complete crap - all that refers to is the economic command system as opposed to the market system. The point of socialism is that the WORKERS, the people, control the means of production. Government control of the means of production is not inherent in socialist philosophy. -lx
This puzzled me for a while too, but I think I have it figured out. The Onion does offer a paper subscription version, an online version, and a free print version, all of which are different. The free paper version has a lot of stuff missing(most notably Savage Love), and the online version usually just carries highlights from the paper subscription version. The free print version you can find lying around fashionable places in big cities, I guess - I know I've seen them around Chicago.
Wish the full paper version weren't so expensive, though... -lx
Well, mesa doesn't support the TNT, and neither does Be's ogl. I'm perfectly happy to wait. I'd like to try blender too, but I can't see why the author has his knickers in a twist just because he has to wait a couple weeks to let people have it. -lx
"What makes this 'virtual attack' even more egregious is the fact that these falsehoods are posted on Yahoo! message boards for millions of people to read and they cannot be removed from the Internet by the company."
Give me one reason why you SHOULD be able to remove these falsehoods from the internet! Poor millionaire, can't make people stop saying bad things about him...I have absolutely no sympathy.
I agree with the Iron Rule of Acronym pronunciation, almost. Solaris=so-lar-is ex=ex ed=ed vi=vee-eye, because "vie" sounds stupid. etc=et-see var=var like car, but with a v. lib=lib because that's how it's spelled. latex=latek the x is the greek character. gif=gif because jif sounds excessively dumb. #=octothorpe, it has an e on the end. ~=tilde duh. there's little enough tilde awareness as it is. daemon=day-mon might as well, because the it's 'ae' instead of the squished together a and e. fsck=fsck that's not that hard, cmon. chmod=chmod chown=chown that's a simple one! so there. now you never have to worry about it again. -lx
With you talking like that, it would take forever! There's nothing wrong with pronouncing your acronyms, it makes speech more efficient. If you're going to spell out all of them, you might as well just say what they stand for. -lx
At first, I never liked the episodes with mike, but eventually I grew to like him even more than joel. With mike, the shows were more consistently funny whereas in the older ones, it could be great one week and suck the next. It's sad to see the show go away(It's the only show on tv I bother to watch, except for the japanese shows on the international channel), and I hope all the cast will go on to make other shows, though I don't know if they could ever be as good as mst. Joel's solo projects really sucked(tv wheel, etc.). -lx
I can't fathom why anyone would watch it. Beavis and Butthead was a stupid show about stupid people, any way you look at it. About as stupid as SouthPark. I feel sorry for those people who have such an unrefined sense of humor that simply watching cartoon characters swear pushes their buttons. King of the Hill I've never watched, but from the commercials, it seems like a show about Beavis and Butthead's parents.
Then again, there's tv for you. 2 words. Lizard Brain.
Because Linuxppc isn't a competitor to MacOS, and BeOS is. Apple has given the g3 specs to the LinuxPPC group already, and refuses to give them to be. Basically, your average mac user isn't likely to give up MacOS for linux, but they will take a serious look at BeOS, which is why they don't want it there. -lx
Although I also have very little programming experience(other than sql and lex if you would call that programming:P), I have heard from a number of coders that I respect that it's dangerous to regard one's code as art, simply because it tends to detract from logical structure. Although programming often takes creativity, it has to be structured to be efficient and useful. Other people need to be able to interpret it. And let's face it, the 'art' we are creating is meant primarily for computers, which often have a very poor sense of aesthetics.
I also disagree that simply because one is being paid to program, or is being told what to create, that it makes the final product worth less. I personally can work better and more creatively when I'm given constraints to work within. Sit me down and say 'just program something useful' and you probably won't get much out of me.
And lastly, "(Sorry FreeBeasties: I don't keep track of your gurus!)". That's because we don't have any. I personally don't see the need to worship one. The creators of FreeBSD are typically low-profile, and that's the way I like it.
I'd love to have that kind of power, and I know that the ppc is a superior chip to x86, but I simply can't afford to get a box like that - I need something that I can build myself and scavenge parts for. I don't know how many other Slashdot readers are similar to me, but I'm a college student low on resources, and I would think that a number of you are in the same boat.
I wish I could mail them and tell them to support the PIOS boxes, and I hope they do - when I get out of this school hopefully I'll have the money to get one, or something like it. It's definitely time to ditch x86. -lx
riva tnt is supported, the experimental drivers work just fine. I have a an SB pci128 (es1370 chipset i think, which is what the yamaha uses) and it works just fine with the downloaded drivers. -lx
I believe nvidia did release what was necessary to support their cards under linux. I have to agree that it is unfortunate that only 3dfx is supported, TNT is so much nicer and costs less... -lx
not mine. it's on /dev/wd0a

No, we'd all be fed.

Yeah, the whole article was a little metaphor-heavy. But one can never have too much content, I suppose...

What could be more lizard-brain than sitting around watching cartoons swear?
Besides, it's been done to death. It's even worse than 'swing-dancing'. gag me.
-lx
Just set your profile to only show people who have a score of one. You get 1 point just for not being anonymous.
-lx
Although you are right that the cook people are misled, please try to remember who gave you the internet - the US.
And frankly, you have no room to talk about personal habits - Lutefisk, Aqvavit(sp), Lefse - need I say more? Pimply teenagers in red jumpsuits?
-lx
Let's ALL go and post on yahoo message boards that Wade Cook was arrested for accepting kickbacks...see what they do then... >;)

You are, of course, missing the main point which is that "jif" sounds really dumb.

Um, I for one don't. That's why I try not to use Linux.

Agreed. Gimp is a decent program, but until the interface is cleaned up, I can't use the damn thing.
