Lots of folks are recommending that you go with your own server.
As someone who has gone that route before, I can tell you that unless you want to become a server admin, and deal with all security and updates, intrusion and hacking attempts, etc, you're way better off finding a place where you can get a dedicated server - and they'll do the maintenance, security and upgrades. Had my own server - and when it got hacked, it got hacked badly. My fault, because though I'm web savvy, server maintenance & security is it's own art, which I never should have attempted.
(FWIW, and I do NOT work for them, I'm doing this now with Host Duplex. http://hostduplex.com/ They have been extraordinarily helpful, communicative and stable.)
Hope this helps.

That the worst kind of flamethrowing / sniping / namecalling would be happening in here.
A**ple fankids have been the snidest bunch I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with - going all the way back to the 80's at SF Macromedia conferences, where, when the PC's crashed during presentations, howls of laughter and yelled-out snide remarks were all the rage. When the Macs crashed... polite silence. Some things never change.
I'm getting a Fire for my honey for Xmas. I'm not expecting it to be the damned second coming of Christ. Nor am I expecting it to perform on par with / exceed a $500 to $900 tablet - because I actually did my research before buying it. (And if I WERE going to buy one, you can bet yer ass it wouldn't be an iPad) The Fire is is a media consumption tablet with some extra bells and whistles - and if you compare it apples to apples (sorry) to something like an iTouch (which I have)... I'll take it in a heartbeat - if for no other reason than the fact that I don't have to use some POS proprietary software (iTunes) to get an damned MP3 on it. And for those of you who protest when someone rightfully describes iPads and iTouches as closed systems - well, hope yer enjoying the Kool Aid.
Amazon never positioned this as an iPad killer - pundits and press did - and in a sense they were right - maybe not killing the iPad as a device - but definitely taking a big chunk of the market that the iPad never could. Why? Because there are a whole bunch of folks out there who would never shell out over half a grand on a tablet. They are now.
One last thought - I work independently in tech - have for over 20 years, on both platforms. So do a bunch of friends - some of whom have actually made the plunge and bought a Fire. Everything I've heard back is positive - they think it's a lovely little device that does what they expected it to. In fact, I haven't heard a single negative.
"It’s smoother and quicker than the only similar system I’ve tried, a Vadem Clio smart netbook from 1999."
Still have one of them. But it wasn't a netbook by any stretch. It was a slammin CE tablet.
This is the same flawed logic that allowed businesses to pump crap out of smokestacks for decades.
There are savings that don't involve money - like public health and clean air.
"they realise that no one is viewing their profile, so their tweets are
pointless".
As a steady twitter user - well, duh. You have to actually CONVERSE with people to form friendships there - it's not about creating a profile for others to view.
But more to the point - I find it fascinating that Morgan Stanley - and the world for that matter, seems to find the observations of a 15-year-old so relevant. Not that I've got anything against 15-year-olds - I've got a kid of my own. But between facebook, myspace and twitter, I've got hundreds of friends that I actually know in one way or the other - and less than 10 are teens. This is the case for most of the people I know.
Why are these observations sparking such a "storm"?
For those who were talking about the mainstream media covering this adequately...Go listen to the 2600 recordings of Emmanuel Goldstein being rounded up during the NY RNC convention. You'll get an entirely different feel for what's it's like to be detained for just being on the street.
What planet did they land us on, anyway?
Yeah but if you're posting something musical - this doesn't apply at all. It's not a matter of cutting out background noise, it's about screwing up the mix.:)
Yep - same router, same issues.
Sometimes the wireless network will simply disappear. And I'm plugged into a power conditioner, for the record.
Sometimes, I'll go to post a file to a site in Dreamweaver, and it'll respond "waiting for server"... time to reboot, in either case. Have updated firmware and everything - no dice.
Sigh.

Came from a Nissan Turbo ZX that had been t-boned. Saw it on the wrecker, and followed him to the junkyard. Got the pair for 50 bucks, and THEY took 'em out.
Been using this one as an office chair for over a decade, and it's been great for my back. (Though I can say that the padding under the butt has seen better days.)
With the consensus that astrology is complete nonsense.
While it is general in nature, and yes, there is truly crappy astrology out there, I have found that it can be an invaluable tool for general guidance.
Also - if you study general traits for people of a particular sign, you'll find that, more often than not, they do match up. With exceptions, for sure, but again - I said GENERAL guidance.
I found it purely by happenstance, but those of you who are open minded about it - go to tarot.com, or else use the google gadget in igoogle, and just for a week or so, check out your horoscope on a daily basis. I found them to be so completely relevant to what was happening in my life that I check them daily now.
Let's appeal to those fine minds [...] to apply their genius to cooperating with us to save the recorded music industry (accentuation added),
They must be really desperate... Yeah - except technically speaking, anyone - artist OR label - is part of that industry. Even if it's an independent artist who presses and sells their own CD's, or distributes their own MP3's.
While I'm not sure how I feel about the ISP thing, I do know this much: the less that artists stand to gain income from their work, the less artists will be able to survive making art - meaning that in the end, there will be less art.
This is, to me, the tragedy of illegal downloads. (and I'm not trolling here, but spare me the semantic arguments about whether or not it's theft or illegal - you didn't pay for it, meaning that the person who made it isn't being compensated. It's theft.) That people (allegedly music lovers) now take music for granted - so much so that they could care less about the fate of the artist.
No. "Profit" in the legal sense is about material gain. Avoiding costs is not a material gain. If it was, General Motors could claim billions in "profits" by avoiding regulatory fines by not selling cars that violate federal safety regulations. e.g. "We had profits of $27 billion this year by not building and selling 100,000 cardboard Chevy Suburbans!" Sounds ridiculous, right? Well. I'd argue that you materially gain - by gaining material. It's not about avoiding costs, it's about actually obtaining something without paying for it. Following your logic, I could steal someone's car and claim that I was "avoiding the cost" of buying one.
My personal view on fair use is much the same as my view on downloading - fine if you do it for yourself or with no intention of profiting from it... But if you download a movie without paying for admission, or rental, aren't you profiting from it?

>i should be able to exchange my license to use this music with anyone else for a swap or money exactly like any other 2nd hand market.
Yep - but it should be mandatory that you give up ALL possession of that music, just as you would with a second-hand shovel.
