You misunderstood me. Or you understood me partially wrong.

I meant, if your metro area (including the suburbs and ex-urbs) continue to grow at it's current rate, won't your comfortable suburban home suddenly be inside the city, and therefore undesirable? Who wants to live in the city, right? Everyone wants to live in the suburbs. And the suburbs are now even further out.

That's why I challenged your logic, you are contradicting yourself. If you really wanted your children to benefit from the hypothetical endless growth of the metro area, you'd need to buy undeveloped land outside of the suburbs, or even in the rural areas. But even then you are just putting off the inevitable time when it too is within the city itself.

Even though I don't want their twisted morals imposed on me, I recognize that at least they care about what's going on around them.

  7. Re:Now I'm confused, but .... on How Do You Become A Console Game Programmer? · · Score: 1

The reason why console development kits are so expensive (20K and up) is that they don't want an indie development scene of any kind.

    1) It would produce a lot of bad games and apps, which would diminish the brand of the console. Related to that is that they wouldn't be able to control the content. This was especially true earlier when some manufacturers wanted only kid friendly stuff.

    2) They make their money off of the games that are sold, so an indie scene is seen as a parasite on the profits.

There are good arguments against both of these, but I'll leave those for someone else to make.

Those three games are bad examples, FPS and RTS don't play very well on consoles. Halo was somewhat acceptable because of the slower pacing, but even that was hard to master for me. Star Wars Galaxies is a MMORPG if I'm not mistaken, which needs a keyboard, ie you can't play it on a regular console.

Consoles are good for the developer because the ratio of piracy is considerably lower. The owner of a console is likely to buy at least one game a month, which the average PC owner isn't very likely to do.

I was a little disappointed that the trailer was all action, and didn't give any feeling about the theme. It would've been cool to at least start the trailer with the cobblestone streets and horse-drawn coaches to show that it is the 19th Century, and not the 1930s like it seems based on the car shots. They didn't move it in time, did they??
