Yeah, that's kind of what raised a red flag with me as well.
I'm wondering if maybe the guy found asian porn, the women kind of looked underage (as asians sometimes do even if they are not), and he called it kiddie porn just to make his position look better.
But (and sorry to reply to my own post) I must point out that I am not a sysadmin so I don't really care.:) If I saw kiddie porn I'd turn them in, but regular porn, I'd likely just laugh and go about my day. I don't find that kind of thing offensive, and it's the real sysadmins' jobs to find it.
Of course, knowing the sysadmins where I work, they'd just want a copy.
I disagree. When it comes to kiddie porn, the sysadmin has no latitude to be selective. At the very *least* he is obligated to tell the HR department, and may even be obligated to call the FBI or other law enforcement agency. If he doesn't take these actions, he could be arrested and charged as an accessory.
If I saw regular porn - even if it was the most vile and disgusting stuff I could possibly imagine (and, if you know me, that's pretty bad) then I'd just report it to HR and be done with it (not reporting it could get me fired). If it were kiddie porn, well, I'd notify HR, and tell them that if they didn't call the FBI, I would, and that there is no room for negotiation. A competent HR department would completely understand.
I can understand the kiddie stuff. But what's wrong with asian women? Last I checked, asian women were beautiful, and there is nothing illegal about viewing them. It may be against company policy, but THAT is not worth calling the FBI over.
I know what the author was trying to get across, and there was plenty of cause to call the FBI, but lumping the asian women with children is just demeaning to the women.
This is not shopping cart DRM. This is the equivalent of putting a strap on your car stereo and bolting it to the frame. Not only that, but a shopping cart is REAL TANGIBLE PROPERTY.
Anyone who thinks that stores don't have a right to protect their own property has lost all touch with reality.
I'd defend the right of the people who started this to continue on as long as they can support it, but I'm not sure it should be called a "museum". A museum implies some hind of historical accuracy.
Perhaps "theme park", or "house of ill repute" instead?
I don't know. I kind of like my penis, and I also kind of like it when a woman needs a penis, preferably mine. But I used all of my mod points this afternoon on a much less amusing thread, so you're safe.:)
(alas, no one has needed it in many years... which is why I am posting on slashdot on a thread about an ipod vibrator that I will probably never buy, see, use, or get within 10 feet of knowingly...)
He should have been fired, or at least disciplined, for that.
No, pressing the button should not have had an effect. But there was no way of knowing that for certain, and by playoing around with a button that was only supposed to be pressed in an emergency, and for a VERY GOOD REASON, he was complicit in causing this to happen.
However, the company has some blame for screwing up the install in the first place, and it is good that the problem was found.
If I were his manager, I would not have fired him, but I would have written him up formally. He should not have been messing with that button, he should have kept his hands off unless there were an actual emergency.
Drama for the sake of drama? Perhaps, but I don't think so. I think it's more an attempt to shame Verio. After all, Cryptome has been providing an important public service for years, and Verio shutting it down is not good for their public image.
Personally, I think the energy should be spent finding better hosting. That is one problem with the activist types - any setbacks become a part of a larger conspiracy. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
And sometimes a cigar will cause a president to get impeached....
Then, unfortunately, consumers will get what they deserve.
Just because the majority are idiots doesn't mean the government has an obligation to protect them from themselves. We don't think it's right, we occupy a unique position to try to get that changed. Don't look to the government, you know they'll just screw it up.
That reminds me so much of the cult I grew up in. "someone doesn't like what we're doing, so they're of satan, oh and please send all your money to this address so we can get more hapless suckers"
I don't buy it. To me the "morality" of abortions is a morally hazy thing. If it were me, I wouldn't get one, but I respect that it's enough of a grey area that I would rather err on the side of liberty. Therefore I'm pro-choice.
I'm not pro-abortion. Just pro choice. I don't believe it's apropriate to filter our view of morality on others - at least until the baby is, by all standards, viable. *all* standards.
Otherwise, keep your nose out of a woman's choice. If it's not your choice to make, stay the hell out.
And actually, I'm a man. I'd never ask a woman to get an abortion. And I probably wouldn't stay with a woman who aborted my child. But if I have nothing to do with it, the most I'd do is talk to her as a friend. And I wouldn't begrudge her her choice with her own body.
Frankly, I'm really tired of religions trying to tell people what to do with themselves. I really wish people would keep their religions to themselves and just love others.
I make a hobby out of going to surplus stores and picking up surplus hardware real cheap. I've got all sorts of crufty old stuff, none for over 15 dollars. They were selling VIC-20s and C-64s for $50. This is way too expensive, and even though it'd be a nice little piece of hardware to have, it's too expensive and not worth the price they're asking.
Let me put it this way. I picked up a drawing tablet that works with mouse protocol for $15. I picked up a much more recent, in fact, brand new, microcontroller-based device that only needs reprogramming for $5.
That price is outrageous. Wake me when they sell them for $10.
If you can't figure out how to mail me, don't.

I couldn't agree more. Flourescent lights have a very detrimental effect on my productivity. I avoid them whenever and whereever I can. I prefer warm, soft lighting - it's much easier on my eyes and somehow my brain works better.
Which reminds me, I should rework this home office...
I try to avoid looking in the mirror. ;)
I am white, my girlfriend is mexican, and I don't care. :)
Frankly, I'm to the point where I'd date anyone BUT a white woman.
Asian children = wrong.
Going to China to bang asian women? Why not? Why is that irresponsible?
Yeah, that's kind of what raised a red flag with me as well.

But at least for the present female porn is not the same as kiddie porn in the eyes of the law.
I can understand the kiddie stuff. But what's wrong with asian women? Last I checked, asian women were beautiful, and there is nothing illegal about viewing them. It may be against company policy, but THAT is not worth calling the FBI over.

Yeah. That's utterly ridiculous.

My penis is almost more important than food. Except I need food to keep my penis alive.
It all... umm.. balances out in the end.
You mean Ron Jeremy?
Ohhhh, you said long ritard. My bad.
Or maybe the iMwet?
so are you saying this is a reDICKulous lawsuit?

I've been a customer of BofA for several years now and have zero complaints. They've always seemed on top of things.
I've also worked at WaMu (I was a system admin with root on all of their UNIX machines corporatewide). I don't think I would ever bank there.

Yes, I have. I found it cumbersome and annoying.
