starting with laws to stop raves
Because the rave parties were being held out in disused barns in the countryside, through the night to the early morning, disturbing both farm workers and animals.
olitical demonstrations in certain areas (like outside parliament)
Because the MP's didn't want their work disturbed by the noise made by certain protestors - if they listened to the voted population in the first place, they wouldn't have protestors outside their offices in the first place. If your gatherd on private land you can be done for trespass, other than that if raves arnt doing anything illegal, the government has no right to interfere.

Yeah, there are numerous solutions, but no standard and nothing implemented by multiple distros (who can't even standardize on a package format I might mention). Actually there is a standardized package format, RPM (or more specificially a restricted supset of RPM that is gauranteed to work with alien) which is compatible with all major distros.

So far the most common workflow for installing software (research on Web then install based upon the info found) is still pretty mythical. A few developers have Web pages that will allow for fairly easy installation, if you happen to be using the right distro, otherwise, it's worse than Windows. Almost all developers offer both a tar and source, if you cant install software from one of those two your doing it wrong. Most developers also host a RPM or a deb too, i dont know if RPM bassed distros can handle debs but for debian based systems you have 4 different ways of installing it in no more than 3 commands. OFC using tars means you lose out on package management but you dont even get that on windows.

The only safe way to update a system is a reboot, sure you CAN do some stuff on linux bsd etc to avoid having to reboot( hell this was probably running some unix derivative so it was probably possible to do the update without rebooting), but you wouldn't want to run the risk of introducing an unchecked bug by doing a live update. when your choices are:
    a) high chance of accidentally shutting down a reactor harmlessly
    b) small chance of fucking up a nuclear reactor
you'll always go for (a), if your sane.
