What I see here is a global conspiracy to get the people of the world to dumb down into a pre-industrial era average intelligence.
The people behind this once controlled the world by exploiting people who didn't know squat about how the world works. They ask for tributes to a higher being in the guise of a comfortable life after death.
These guys who are lowering the math standards are the same people behind the entire 'taking evolution out of the classroom' BS.
The great thing about having all these derivatives of Linux is choice. Choice on which to use, to support and to force upon your Windows using friends.
Go ahead, let those people who want to use gNewSense for that shiny white purity of free as in speech/beer OS. If swarms upon swarms of open source developers use it and fully open source drivers come out from it, then great It'll serve its purpose!
If they snap out of their damn senses and realize that there is already a completely free Debian GNU/Linux available, IMHO, better!
If they get fed up trying to use it because it doesn't "Just Work", then they ought to use Ubuntu or the other, friendlier distros.
But hey,/.ers wouldn't be nerds/geeks if they didn't try to force their opinions on everyone else.
If instead of focusing our efforts toward the arms race, we had been pushing toward the space race, we could've begun trying to terraform our planetary neighbors, Mars or Venus. The data we could've received from manipulating climates in those planets could have and still could help in our efforts to stabilize Earth's climate to sustain our existence on this planet.
Plus, if we succeed, we could just dump this place and move.
It surprised me that no one on Slashdot actually asked this question. Why would Google want to use up its own resources that they themselves won't benefit from, not even indirectly IMHO. They can't stuff WINE'd products with their ads without enraging the community, there isn't any Adobe-Google allicance AFAIK, so why is Google doing this? Why not say "We are sponsoring WINE development." Why sponsor Photoshop on linux through WINE?
If patents are meant to stimulate new inventors into sharing their ideas to the world by having them own the right to make money out of it, then this system is already obsolete. People in the open-source community are already jam-packed with radical new thinkers and inventors that do not subscribe to the need for commercially marketing their creations. They release it to the public, free of charge, complete with the source code.
But since the world's leaders (government and business) still think in terms of dollars, we wouldn't see this legacy system disappear anytime soon
The Philippines is pretty low on budget. Not because we lack certain industries or we have a crappy economy, but because those dumb-ass politicians we have keep most of our tax money in their pockets. Mostly, they don't start projects they wouldn't profit from. When a certain amount of money is alloted to a certain project, they find ways to cheapen the price and keep the change for themselves. They see Linux as their cash-cow. They get praise for computerizing the public school system (which gets them votes) and they keep the remaining amount of money they save from not purchasing licenses from Microsoft.
Anyway, in the Philippines, Computer Gaming/Internet shops are quite ubiquitous. These shops are often jam-packed with students of all ages from different walks of life who play MMOGs for 20 pesos an hour (about 50 cents). And the kids with computers have cheap 100 peso (a little over $2) pirated copies of Windows in their systems. This already provides them with enough Windows know-how.
Linux is really a lot better anyway, and the kids here today have to learn to realize that.

It has been proven by the Wisest Human on Earth, Dr. Gene Ray that the world is a CUBE!!
Education vaporized your brain by not being taught the four corners of CUBIC CREATION!!!

But hey,
Mods, feel free to remove it... crap all that time for nothing
