I can't see the point of this if it is "only for a few days" as the emails they would want to track would have been before hand.

It appears that they are now using the attack on New York to justify it.

A poll on exite.com homepage is currently asking what freedoms you are prepared to give up in return for the end of terrorism. When I looked 54% were saying they still would not be willing to give up any rights. IMHO to do so would be letting the terrorists win.

But if you've been following all the news reports recently you would see this is what the Record companies are looking for.

A big drop in sales (even if made up due to creative accountancy) will be attributed to the use of Napster and on-line sharing. This backs up their case even more as it proves them right.

What we need to do is buy twice as many cd's in a month. But then they would probably ignore that too.

"However, when the Big Picture is taken into account, it becomes a bad thing. The important word here is 'precedent'. By agreeing to ban Nazi stuff, Yahoo are admitting that any country around the world can decide what a US site can display."

According to the BBC News report of the story Yahoo has banned the sale of Nazi items in accordance of their own TOC and not because of the French descision. Even though they have chosen to ban these items they are continuing with their appeal in the US courts over the jurisdiction of the French courts.

They have also banned auctions for any other hate group propaganda including the KKK.

Yahoo's lawyer said "The company shared a general concern about hate speech. But the company also is concerned about freedom of speech, which is why we will continue to fight the French court's order,"

How can Jar Jar become Boba Fett? Boba Fett has already got a complete history and back story provided by the novels. As the novel treatments are cleared by Lucas first and kept consistent within the Star Wars Universe.

This is the reason no books have been written about the Clone Wars as Lucas wanted the stories untouched so he could make the prequels.

It's likely the Mandalorians may make an appearance in the films but Jar Jar won't be among them.

This is what leads to a Catch 22 situation. The press are justifying use of the terms by quoting the dictionary, but most dictionaries are kept upto date through monitoring repeated use of new words/meanings in the press.

  12. Were Demon responsible? on UK's Demon Settles Usenet Libel Case · · Score: 1

It saddens me that the courts have decided to find Demon guilty in this issue. For those who don't know, the complaint was not about a flame but a defamatory remarks that were spoofed to come from him in soc.culture.thai. He allegedly notified the helpdesk that the messages had been posted and the agent he spoke to did not remove them for him.

Having worked on that helpdesk at the time I don't know anyone who would have removed them. We were used to the policy that Newsgroups on Demon were fully uncensored and to remain a passive provider we did not carry out any modification of the feed unless reported as being illegal by the IWF. Anyone reporting illegal material were asked to email a report to abuse@d.n and it would then be looked at from there. The helpdesk were not expected to carry out any of the duties that Godfrey asked for and were right not to carry them out. At the time of the complaint Demon Internet was considered to be one of the best, innovative and most technical ISP's available so it's a shame that one person's greed can put an end to that. (It should be noted that this was not the first Internet Libel case Dr. Godfrey has attempted)

This has now killed off the idea of freespeech and will almost definately kill of usenet in the UK (Who would risk carrying a newsgroup now?).

IANAL: Most companies have a clause in their employment contracts saying that any work developed whilst working for the company in company time is owned by the company. So AOL probably are within their legal rights to stop this as it is hard to prove (and probably unlikely) that the programmers only worked in their own time. Plus a threat to their jobs would pretty much stop them working it on the project.
