We found a system with two planets that take the roles of Jupiter and Saturn in our Solar System Yes, just like Jupiter and Saturn are the only two planets in our solar system, so are these! Yes, I can see the similarities! And considering the range of sizes stars have, versus the number of stars, I have to say no, there are many many stars virtually indistinguishable from our sun. It's nice that they found some planets similar to our gas giants, but I don't think that gives them the right to call that system our twin. A "twin" of our system should have multiple small, rocky planets orbiting inside several large, gassy planets with maybe a sparse cloud of icy particles orbiting in the far reaches.

Hate to be pessimistic, but this is borderline vaporware... Well, I really mean the software is just ahead of its time. The printer prints plastic and will soon print some kind of solder, which I guess they're hoping can also be used to connect circuits. But it can't print circuits, copper, and a lot of other important things. So right now, the software exists, but the hardware is still just an idea.

In other words, yes, you have to buy the parts and solder them together.

Copyrights and trademarks, IMHO, were essentially designed to protect the little guy. It's unfortunate that they only seem to work for the "big guy" these days (or should I say, He Who Can Afford the Most Lawyers) but one way or the other, Ainsworth came up with the idea, so he should be free to do what he wants with it. I know that legally, the producers probably own the design, but come on. It WAS his idea. Why can't Lucas let him have his share of the pie? I mean, is any rich person NOT a douchebag these days?

It's like everytime someone comes up with a great idea and gets rich off it, they turn into a douchebag almost instantly. This is a sad turn of events. I think Lucas was a different person in 1980.

Honestly, I wish there could be some middle ground. Ainsworth came up with the idea, but it wouldn't have been worth anything if it wasn't for the movie, so they should *both* be able to profit off it. The End. Too bad real life isn't that simple.

  4. Re:Double Edged Sword on University of Washington Tracking the Edge of Privacy · · Score: 0

Cell phone tracking is unreliable; the system uses triangulation by measuring the signal strength of the phone to various towers. Since there are plenty of things to interfere with those signals, it can only be effective to that kind of accuracy in highly redundant areas (ie, downtown) and even then, the position is still unreliable. I know that the American systems keep information regarding the last HLR your phone was registered with, but I'm surprised to hear that they keep signal data for all the towers. I wonder if that's how the Boost Mobile system works (which I can't understand why ANYBODY would want that anyway).

Agreed. Just because someone feels that having to pass a drug test for employement is a violation of their privacy doesn't automatically make them guilty. I imagine most of the people who feel that way have never had to stand in a bathroom with the door open, pissing in a cup, just to watch it get bottled up and sent off to a lab somewhere to be analyzed. It's actually kinda creepy. And it's all part of this trust-no-one, cover-your-ass, follow-the-dollar-signs mentality that the whole country, especially coporations and the government, are guilty of. Because of this, individuals will continue to be treated more and more like criminals until they can prove they aren't, which in turn will become harder and hard to do. And this whole business of being able to prove your identity is getting ridiculously out of control. If you've heard of TWIC then you know what I'm talking about. I already carry 5 forms of picture ID, and now they want me to get another one with all of my fingerprints?

After all the trouble Vista has caused, I was hoping for some relief with SP1. The only difference I've seen so far is slower internet and less compatibility.

What annoys me the most about it (okay one of the many things that annoy me the most about it) is what else are we paying for 1mb/s for? I certainly don't need that for regular surfing. Even youtube can stream at 30k/s. Unless the file you're downloading is over 50mb, 100k/s max is just fine. The only time anyone needs that turbocharged speed is when they're downloading gigabyte-sized files. So aside from the whole legal issues, I don't think anyone should have to pay for 1mb/s that they don't get.
