(Not griping AT senior Taco, I'm agreeing WITH senior Taco) I find the whole DJIA/NASDQ/etc. etc. thing to be, hmmmm (looking for the right words) a combination of uninteresting and weird. I read somewhere that if you substitued something like 5 large companies for another set of 5 companies in the DJIA the crash in the 20's didn't happen. i.e. the DJIA would NOT have crashed (of course, those 5 compaines may very well have) - it seemed to hint at the whole perception drives truth thing - people saw the DJIA tanking, so they bailed, which of course made it tank worse, so it spread, yada yada yada. Don't flame if I'm wrong on specifics (you are, of course, welcome to if I am totally in left field), cuz I'm just not interested in it enough to investigate it deeper than the generalities...

Look for a story about a 17 year old girl who very publicly shot herself with her dad's .357 magnum. That girl would have been *my* girlfriend at the time. She was diagnosed manic/depressive, and was prescribed litium. When she took her lithium, she was fine (maybe I'm arrogant defining the term like that, tough shit. I was there, you weren't). Not drugged, not spaced, just totally normal. You would have never thought a thing unless you happened to see her take her pills. She was so normal (oft abused word, I know, but the general meaning applies) that she would wonder why the hell she needed to take the durn pills and inevetibaly (-5 pts for spelling) QUIT taking them, this is what happened when I got to watch her shoot herself at the ripe old age of 17 (after pointing the gun at me, which got oddly less traumatic after the end result) So - I have seen it, up close, in your face, and graphically. If you wanna think she was just "weak" or otherwise normal and just "stressed out" or something, you are Flat Wrong(tm). I genuinely hope this fella (who started this thread) can go on. I admit I don't know what it feels like, but I know what it LOOKS like. It made no sense to me - but guess what? I'm (nor you) are the ones it needs to make sense TO, I would also opine that it probably doesn't make sense to those suffering from m-d. Anyways, to the arrogant pricks who are saying stuff like "m-d is bs, you're just weak and can't take it" You have no idea how wrong you are.

For instance, when we did some wide-ranging "Y2K" upgrades reccomended by them, I took my $600.00usd Cisco 64MB DRAM DIMM and stuck it in my workstation - worked fine. I then did the opposite, fine as well. * They seem to be EOL (end-of-life) happy. Just when a model starts getting established in our network (as big as it is it takes a while) they will start the EOL process on the friggin thing. * They have EXCELLENT uptime. I can't ever think of one of these (despite literally being a computer/OS) hanging, and we have some of these (those in locations not requiring following their dizzying upgrade path) with uptimes measured in _years_. The ones with uptimes NOT measured in years are that way through no fault of Cisco's (well, I guess "technical" fault is better. When you had to upgrade the thing because they EOL'ed that model, that's sort of their fault, right?) Summary: good stuff, expensive stuff ($600.00 for a $100.00 DIMM sucks)
