  1. Not really a point anymore on More on Athlon Overclocking · · Score: 2

Well, being a former overclocker myself, the hey-day(-5 points for spelling) seems to be over to me. No longer is overclocking simply a dip switch or jumper change. With these new cartridge-afied CPUs, you hafta break into the things, and maybe even de-solder and then re-solder those miniscule eyeball straining resistors. With chips running as fast as they are nowdays, I opine that a modern-day overclocker is significantly more bleeding-edge than those of yesteryear, like me. I do admit that I miss it...

Here's where it gets sticky - are the email admins logging? Did I leave my email client on overnight? If I did, there's a very readable version of that mail on a DLT somewhere. Let's say I DID manage to purge the thing completely, did the originator/recipient do the same. Getting rid of a letter, unless it was copied, is as simple as burning it. In other words, the fact that they used l0phtcrack in an illegal way is relevant, it's posession shouldn't be. (am I making sense?) Back to the lockpick - for instance, I own one for whatever legal reason, that ownership is legal, but if I use them for an illegal reason, I don't see how that renders the *ownership* of the lockpick illegal. Sure, slap my pee-pee for being bad with them, but *not* for owning them. (I hope you respond and that we can keep this civil)

It would essentially be saying (to use the lockpick metaphor) Lockpicks are fine to possess, unless you use them. i.e. the committing of a crime with an otherwise legal device thereby renders the possession of that device illegal. SO - owning the lockpicks is fine until you use them to break into something, then you're guilty of the breakin AND owning the lockpicks.

If they DIDN'T open it up, the only buckazoids they'd see would be from direct customers - i.e. people who signed up specifically for AOL. But by opening up, you still keep all those (well, most anyways) customers, but suddenly you are skimming buckazoids from every customer that signs up to competing ISP's over this. This little gem has dramatically increased the potential number of people from whom they can get monthly fees (probably unseen by the customer, it'll be rolled up in the ISP's monthly fee) Maybe there's something deeper to this, or maybe they are being altruistic, but I think it's just an obvious money maker (which is not a Bad Thing to me, hell, they own the cable, they should be able to charge to use it)
