If you can't deal with release dealys, then don't read the pre-release announcements and find yourself pleasently suprised when you browse the shelves of your local CompUSA. (Windows.NET? &ltrant&gtAt the risk of getting marked flamebait, it's sometimes sickening to see the knee-jerk anti-Microsoft reaction around here. How many posts of "Nooooo" are there in this thread? What possible harm does this do to Linux in general, or you in particular. Just because Office might work under Linux, nobody is going to force you to buy and use it. I personally can't stand StarOffice, but when Sun announced the GPLing of it, I wasn't posting "Nooooo....say it isn't so" all over that thread. Sometimes the people who read this website and post to it need to get over their biases and sort out the facts.&lt/rant&gt

I can actually appreciate what they've done with Windows (it may not be the most stable, but can you name a better OS for e-mail and letter writing for grandma?). WordPerfect is much better than Word.....when I build people computers, I offer to buy them a copy of the WordPerfect office suite for them for free and put it on their computer, or they can pay me to install MS Office. More often than not, when my clients get used to WordPerfect, they will not go back to MS Office.

What I'm trying to say here, in a long winded kinda way, is simply that WordPerfect users are a lot more loyal than you may think

Does anybody know why lawyers are so addicted to WordPerfect? Is it just because the first judge to get an office suite went Corel and everyone had to follow along, or is there a more logical explanation?

I don't know, but if it was the first judge, he would have bought WordPerfect from the WordPerfect coroporation. They were their own company until the mid 1990's, when they sold to Novell and everybody thought that Novell was gonna be a big Microsoft killer. I believe that Novell then acquired Quattro from Borland, and sold the whole suite to Corel around 1997.

Actually I don't think this is much of a concern. Open source developers tend to work on projects that they find interesting. I think that these types of projects will attract different developers. However, I think that people working on the kernel and people working on the *BSD kernels are taken from the same pool. So, by following that logic, this may impact PostgreSQL, MySQL, and mSQL. However, I don't think that this is much of a concern anyway, as each of those products has a company backing them up and providing developers.

The point was to make a completely free computer, and I did. I run Linux on it, and most of the time I have no problem being as productive, or even more productive than I am on my Pentium II-333 128MB Windows machine. The only thing I use Windows for is games and web browsing because Mozilla simply runs unacceptably slowly on that Pentium machine. In it's current state, it is not even close to an embeddable-application.
