While I agree that the amount of power used by the box is negligible compared to the TV when it's on, the TVs are probably off a good amount of the time (especially at the schools), and so the amount of power the boxes use suddenly becomes more significant.

A program language should be taught on the basis that it teaches the student programming and not that it jigsaws them into the world of business. I student that can transcend languages is likely to be a better programmer anyways, as they'll have more tools and models with which to get a task done.

I would agree with this in theory, however in practice it doesn't create a programmer who can transcend languages. In fact, they generally become very tied to specific language paradigms or capabilities. For instance, most universities seem to have selected Java as the language for CS. The problem here is that when they get into the "real world" they can't find a job doing anything but java. Why? Because they have no clue what a pointer is or how to use it. Most CS and related programs are hurting our students simply because the instructors don't want to teach about certain things, or because they or the students think it's just too hard. Most people I work with don't really understand how programming really works. I once had a co-worker who had been programming for 20 years, but had no idea that the CPU had registers, what they were for, or how they would be used. That's just sad.

My favorite class with respect to this was assembly. It was fairly easy to pick up and taught you how the computer interpreted commands at a relatively low level.

You (and I) are becoming something of a rarity now days, most people I work with know absolutely nothing about assembly. :-(

It is very interesting that you would say it was "stolen" from the Palestinians. First of all there was not Palestinian state, the land was part of the Ottoman empire which was dissolved.

Was it stolen from the people that lived there at the time, perhaps. However, you can't blame just the British and the Israelis alone, NONE of the arab nations wanted anything to do with the Palestinians, and still don't!

Agreed, fingerprints are not reliable, but we accept them as incontrovertible fact simply because the police and government claim them to be so. The same thing for DNA. With as little as we know about it (and remember they just changed their thoughts again a few days ago), and the number of people that live in this world, the changes of someone having fingerprints or DNA that are a close match are actually pretty good.

These two forms of evidence should only be used to exclude people as suspects!!!

  8. Umm, I think they forgot something. on How Close Were US Presidential Elections? · · Score: 1

Yes, I'm sure they did. They have some very interesting numbers here, but they either forgot or ignored one very important thing. Absentee ballots. You see, the absentee ballots are only counted if necessary. That means that don't know how many votes were really cast for either candidate in either election.

The only way this could be valid is IF they actually counted all the absentee ballots in Florida in the 2000 election (because they definitely did not in 2004). Not only that, did this include the military's absentee ballots which Gore wanted tossed out, because they postmarked after the required date, not because they were mailed late but because they couldn't be postmarked any ealier?

These numbers are nice and all, and I'm sure people are using them to sway American votes, emotions, and thought, but they are not valid.

Agreed! Most people are completely confused about our government, and believe that it is a democracy. It would actually be quite difficult to have a true democracy with this many people in our country.

I'm also with you when it comes to our federal government (even state and local govt) coming in and telling us what to do. This is suppose to be a "government of the people and for the people" but it has turned into a goverment of the politicians and lobbyists for the politician, lobbyists and those who pay the lobbyists.

As someone one said, "I love my country, but I fear the government."
