Cable companies offer DVR's for an extra $5 to $10 a month, which seems equivalent to paying for TV without ads.

I would agree, except that the the DVR menus commonly have advertisements in them. So in reality you're still paying to receive advertisements.

  6. States Rights? on SCOTUS: Clean Air Act Trumps Emissions Lawsuits · · Score: 1

This is an odd ruling. Where does it state in the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Amendments, or any other federal documents that the federal government has sole authority over environmental protection? Surely this can't be considered interstate commerce since we're talking about individual states.

I'm not a believer of man made global warming so I have mixed emotions on this. States should be able to set stricter laws and regulations on activities within their border as they see fit. It shouldn't matter if it is the environment or immigration. We already have this with road use regulations, health care, etc.

The United States is not a country of the masses. It is an alliance of individual states. It is sad that most people (especially the federal government) forget this.

Apple is not SELLING a competing product. Wireless sync comes with the (free) OS. If they charged for the wireless sync, this might be remotely like the Microsoft case.

The OS is free? Where can I get it? What? I can't? I have to buy something to get it? That doesn't sound free to me.

And by the way - wireless sync is not part of any released iOS version to date.

  9. Re:Security is a big selling point on How Apple's iOS Went From Insecure To Most Secure · · Score: 1

"Buy a computer where all your software is pre-screened through our App Store and you don't have to worry about viruses" is a powerful (and potentially very profitable) message in a time when malware and assorted hacks have become so common.

I would say that this is a reason to be even more suspicious of a closed platform. Because it is "locked down" by Apple's standards I'll never be able to determine the security of the device. I have to take Apple at their word that the device is secure.

Until, of course, someone sneaks malicious code in Apple's store without Apple's knowledge.
