    It's pretty normal human behavior for people who work closely with a machine to give it name and personality. Our rovers have twitter accounts. Bomb squads have taken their robot on fishing trips.

    I still remember ordering things by mail! Then you have to factor in the time to mail in your order and for them to process your hand-written order! And you'd better double-check that you calculated the total and taxes correctly too!

    Seriously. Thanks to instant gratification and the internet, it appears that all of us have dropped about 50 IQ points and decided that weather and logistics are not real things and there is no reason why clicking on a few things on our computer shouldn't cause packages to materialize on our doorstep.

    Population increase isn't exactly a planned thing. Humanity would also be better off if we all stopped getting STDs, but the only thing we can do is to react to it. Unless you also have some grand plan that will convince everyone to regulate how many kids we make.

    That's a bit like saying there's no shortage of money; it's a distribution problem.

    It's not like all you have to do is pay for distribution and people will magically get fed. People aren't giving away food and that's not even addressing the massive political barriers to food aid.

    The technology might be fine if used correctly, but big Ag companies have demonstrated that they are as morally irresponsible as big financial organizations. Yes, if Goldman Sachs was running my food, I'd like that to be regulated as well. If Monsanto and BASF tell me mutagenisis is as safe as GMO's, then I would like some third-party oversight for mutagenisis.

    Yes, that is what governments do in general. The PRC doesn't just coerces the Chinese. Taiwan used to be in the UN until the PRC said "it's us or them."

    Meanwhile, Taiwan and Chinese companies happily do business in the high-tech manufacturing industry.

    ...the primary cause of failure in these UAVs is equipment failure, operator error, and weather; the AI you refer to isn't particularly intelligent. If it were intelligent then it would be attempting to fund research into greater autonomy for AI systems...

    Those are the drones that gained sentience. You may think you lost contact with the drone because of the weather, but you can never be 100% sure, can you?

    We don't pull people over and ticket them only for what "could be." Your perfectly legal phone-in-a-hands-free-mount can display the same information irrelevant to the operation of the vehicle, and would be harder to use than Google Glass.

    So what you're saying is that the main threat to our rogue drones is direct human intervention with a missile?

    Clearly, this isn't actually a DARPA project. I believe this is a sign that an AI has gone rogue and managed to sneak this project in as a "DARPA Initiative" as a means to protect its fledgeling race of flying robot killers.

    Skynet is already here.

    The backbone doesn't seem to matter much. You can keep the backbone providers as neutral as you want, but with most of our computer time devoted to browsing, and almost 100% of our activity tracked by social media and ad networks own by a few companies, I don't think whether the internet was a mesh or not matters.

    Those laws would do nothing. In fact, it's very likely that anyone supporting those laws would lose major monitary support for having that stance, but also you can't really make laws that regulates a company's actions in another country.

    The most you can do is to not do business with any company that complies with those US laws, in which case you're telling companies to choose to operate in your country or in the US. And good luck convincing people your country is a bigger market than the US. Most international companies cannot afford that loss.

    Slow down and try to understand what people are saying. Their points are that the US is trampling on a bunch of liberties, but most other places in the world would be doing worse with the same amount of power. The best place to have your data center is in the US because, well look at the clashes between big tech companies and governments like Italy's, China's, Russia's, Australia's, etc. It would be much, much worse if the Syrian governement were in the US's position, for instance.

    On the other hand, it's also premature to declare a company dead when their console one generation back was a huge success, and their handhelds are still extremely popular. On top of that, it's easier than ever to not be "locked in" to a policy of not supporting indie developers with everything being on the cloud now.
