...that this matters so much. Here we have an article by some guy 99.7% of the planet has never heard of in which he slams Linux with "facts" that anyone with three brain cells to rub together can debunk in no time flat.

So what? I hate domestic vehicles, maybe you don't, yet somehow we manage to co-habitate the same planet. For every article like this, there's ten that are written by people with equal or greater status in which Linux is hailed as the second coming of Christ. Either way, does it really matter? By responding en masse to this article, Uncle Moody is getting exactly what he wants - attention. He may not even believe in half of the FUD being spewed forth, but knows very well that this type of article is a cash cow in terms of publicity.

Who actually admires ABCNews for its technical value? Anyone who reads this article, nodding slowly as they mouth the words, and decides that Moody is clearly right on the money deserves every BSOD they recieve as a result. Those who are intelligent will examine all options and go with the solution that best suits their needs, regardless of what it is.

The only reason that obviously slanted articles like this exist is because the authors know damn well that every Linux zealot from here to Tokyo will burst into flames as a result. In case you haven't noticed, countless pro-OSS articles pull the same tricks.

What color is the sky in your world? Since when does the average user care a lick about standard adherence? All the drooling masses care about is having a browser that displays all their wacky animations, graphics and other garbage, and they most certainly don't care how it gets to that point.

Considering the market share that IE currently has, NS6 is going to be climbing a very steep hill to get anywhere near drawing even, nevermind pulling ahead again. To stretch even further, it may not matter anyway, since the whole concept of a web browser may be worthless in two years no matter who's winning.

I have no doubt that it was never intended to sit in a living room, but is there really a need for two very noisy 3" fans in a switch? It's louder than my window-mount air conditioner. I always thought that was the most irritating phrase I would ever hear, and we even asked the bowling alley guy if he could shut it off, but now I find myself remembering it fondly.

I'm only 24, but I've still seen a lot of the stuff I grew up on disappearing, only to be replaced by sterile, soulless computer games. Even pinball machines that still exist aren't the same as those from the 80s... remember how cool it was to break a million points on some of those old ones? Now an easy twenty to thirty million is considered a crappy attempt. Don't even get me started on the cheeseball TV show ripoff themes.

Even the open source community whines and bitches at its own members in the equally worthless BSD vs. Linux 'debates'. Jesus, this might as well be the stupid AOL forums with the amount of completely useless nitpicking and jeuvenile namecalling.

You make yourself look like a jackass by being condescending towards someone who is obviously right. I'm done, so feel free to get back to flaming the people you're not intelligent enough to debate legitimately.

  20. Mainstream acceptance = bad thing. on "What is Linux Missing?" · · Score: 1
Why is it that nearly all the responses to this article are aimed at having Linux replace Windows or MacOS on the collective desktop of the unwashed masses?

It's just silly. The mainstream acceptance of Linux as a desktop OS would require concessions to be made in order for the jackass public to be able to use it. How could this possibly benefit those of us who use and enjoy Linux in its present state (somewhat difficult to use, steep learning curve)? Sure, then we could boast about how we were using it "before it was cool", but what good does that do? By just shutting up and enjoying Linux for what it is, we will ensure that any improvements are done with us in mind, not Larry Lunchpail or Sally Housecoat, who even now find Windows95 baffling.

Yes, I'm selfish, but I don't care. I've had enough of the "make it simple enough for a chimp to use" mentality that has become so common in computers and technology. Sometimes, quality means inconvenience. I like the fact that installing Linux software requires more than a mouse click... it means I have to know and understand what is happening. Dumbing things down so that every mindless cretin can 'play too' will eventually lower Linux to the level of Windows... guaranteed.

So, be careful what you wish for when spewing ideas on how to get Linux to the desktop - it might actually happen.
