    Google is making sure that embrace extend extinguish does not happen. Silverlight is such a threat. Of course, only Bozos will install it, even with the OSS promises. This browser is really a great advance in comparison to Firefox and all others. It seems that, beyond sandboxing, they'll have blazing fast JS, and Gears will be built-in from the start.

    Here's what Steve Ballmer has to say about Microsoft Silverlight.

    Microsoft is in the idea business and uses patents to extend its financial viability.

    If they are in the idea business why won't they have any real idea then? For example, I just applied for a patent for "System and method for a Desktop Cube". Patent provides a system and method for a desktop cube which can hold different user spaces with different windows. The 3d cube can be rotated, and windows may be moved from one facet to another, smoothly rotating the cube blah blah etc etc.

    Microsoft in the idea business? Please ....

    Here's something I don't get. Why do Apple and MS still have their proprietary browsers? Why not just let go off IE and Safari and use expensive engineering resources in other stuff?

    I know, I know, to some extent that's exactly what Apple does with webkit. But my feeling is that, sadly, they cannot concede because of the looming threat of lunix, as in: "first, it was the browser, then, the whole desktop". So no concessions at all are made.

    Google frequently shows me ads that are somewhat relevant to me (although very often it's job ads from my current employer, which is not so useful).

    I took apart a HP laptop, and it was made of components (transistors, capacitors, circuit board, gold linings and such), you know, the boring usual result of the miniturisation process. When I took apart a Mac, I stumbled upon a world was full of little elves and unicorns who were playing on rolling green hills surrounded by snow-tipped mountains and fields of beautiful flowers that danced in the wind like a Russian ballereena. There was also a rainbow or two there as well. The HP laptop was surprisingly a little bit heavier, but that's to be expected. Mactops were sprinkled with faerie dust for taking off most of the weight.

    Elves and Unicorns, I see. But does it run linux?

    Religion is a known rootkit spreading like wildfire these days. It exploits a security vulnerability of the system, installing itself with numerous goals: (i) to make the user bond with those that also got the rootkit, (ii) to violently throw the user against all users uninfected, in an attempt to infect them.

    The rootkit generates much erratic behavior. Known system calls trigger repeatedly are abstinence(), shutthefuckupandobey(), and, most importantly, iBelieve().

    People extend trust to corporations and business entities under the assumption that they have redundancies and contingencies that they don't have the time and money to arrange.

    In the case of dropbox, the redundancy is spread over your machines, plus their copy. So the only issue would be privacy.

    I don't think anyone uses getdropbox for truly sensitive data. That would be gargantually stupid. But I have gigabytes of files that dropbox syncs for me across 5+ machines, all invisibly, without a single touch of a button. No more of that shit trying to find in which computer you put that file. But if you're trusting them with highly sensitive data, well, I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.

    Stay home. IT jobs are getting scarce enough without you coming here and driving the demand for American IT personnel even lower. Please, it has nothing to do with your religion or your ethnicity or your cultural background. On a purely economic level: stay the fuck out.

    I'd go to America do start a company or to do basic research. The problem would be being surrounded by people like you, from the DHS to colleagues.

    Numerically, Americans constitute 5% of the world's population.

    Therefore, statistically 19 out of 20 intelligent people will be foreign.

    and there is also self-selection. Most morons don't even think about going through the hassles in order to get to America. If they do think, they'll likely fail either in handling the due process or getting a job. But the talented know can they can make a difference, and no paperwork is enough obstacle.
