How about a better C compiler as well as a nice new IDE! Instead of gcc, something that produces error messages that can be interpreted by the mere mortal!.. and then have the IDE go to the line with the error in it. Other languages have nice error handling, I don't know why our C compiler has to be such a pain in the ass.
Has anyone had problems with slackware freezing up during kernel compiles on old cyrix machines. Particularly with cyrix 5x86/100 ? I'm running debian 2.1 on this machine now with no problems. Could this be an incompatibility with egcs vs gcc?
Well, about a month ago everyone on slashdot was ranting about how 2.1 has become a bloated buggy piece of crap compared to glibc 2.0.. is this still true? It seems most distributions are moving to 2.1 anyway.
The biggest problem is user's passwords. When you move their web sites you will have to add accounts for them on the new machine, but how will you know what their password was? Same problem with the mail server. Also, I'd recommend avoiding sendmail if at all possible. It's what I'm using (I didn't know there were other choices at the time) and I'm still regretting it. The configuration is so cryptic and obtuse that you might as well write your own mail transfer agent from scratch!
You should learn vi. Even if you aren't going to use it regularly, it is the default editor for important system work on all unixes and you will be laughed out of any "real" unix shop if they see you using pico and emacs...
Sounds more like the Internet UNfreedom Act to me. I love how you libertarian kids go around shouting about rights, yet as soon as one of these rights is inconvient to you, you make laws against it.
Hey, I have an account with #104.. I'm not using it because the name is wrong (it's an old ircnick.. "ir").. this account 'mattc' is under the 21,000 (#12417) but I think I've visited slashdot too often from this account (I get really bored at work, sorry..)
Does anyone want to buy the "ir" account?? #104.. 0 visits. I'm serious.. $25.00
Star Trek Science: whatever we can pull out of our asses to save the failing plot! The "science" of star trek is unfortunately the worst part of an otherwise entertaining show.
sendmail has got to be the worst designed program out there. I don't know what kind of drugs they must have been on when they were writing that thing! If anyone came up with a piece of crap like that today, they'd be laughed out of the room.
Just because it runs on Unix doesn't mean it's good.
PS: I work with sendmail every day so I know what I'm talking about.
nmap has assimilated all the features of queso. See www.insecure.org

If you are such a believer in "security through openness" then why don't you get rid of your firewall and unshadow your passwords?
Let's face it, "openness" isn't the solution to every problem. A binary-only client is a good way to prevent cheating.
I know I will get moderated out of everyone's sight for posting this message, but I'm doing it anyway. Fuck moderation.
PS: I really wish Gimp would have an MDI option!.. .. and more Photoshop-like in general
I agree. This comment is just as useful as most slashdot comments (ie, not at all)...at least this one are funny. Let us read them!
I think there is a greater chance of us finding intelligent life in outer space than there is in us finding it here! :)

They must have finally realized how much Alpha Centauri sucks so they're finally going back to what they're good at -- Civilization.

vim is the most non-standardscompliant piece of crap i've ever seen. Use nvi.
Because slashdot moderators are a bunch of fascist morons.
Maybe I'm missing something. What is the point of the 'shredder'?
They're changing them. They increased the size of the person's picture on the bill, but that's all (still green, black, and white).

I think Opera is making a port to linux also. Although I really don't think we need another binary-only web browser.
Does this mean that they're finally going to get rid of that stupid foot logo?
Can a DVD player in your computer also read regular CD-ROMs? Just wondering..
I was talking about the recent rape allegation, not the impeachment trial. I agree that that is over and done with (I was in favour of censure)..

The propaganda level is high, but there are still a lot of people against it. Especially against using ground troops...
