What the hell were we doing in Kosovo anyway? What a waste of time and money. Clinton is an idiot..
You are also right that many of the targets were not hit. Also the 'ethnic cleansing' by both sides were exaggerated.
In 10 years or so.. when it is politically correct to question the Kosovo conflict, I'm sure it will be classified as one of the biggest propaganda efforts ever.
No, you'd only be fighting disease in africa if that was what you were skilled in (that is, you were a doctor). Of course, there is plenty of people needing medical treatment right here in the good ole US of A, so you wouldn't even have to leave your home.
Basically the author is just saying "don't waste your talent on useless crap." This doesn't seem an unreasonable request to me.
I agree.. while I find it hard to believe anything could top helix-gnome, I'd still like to try KDE. RMS already said the license stuff was a non-issue.. so what is holding back the debian packagers?? I guess I'll just have to compile it from source.
The only thing that is dead is "Suck.com" -- I can't believe anyone reads that nonsense let alone quotes it on slashdot. Not that it's physically possible to read it anyway when it is written like this.
Don't these people have anything better to do than attack other people's hard work? Sheesh!
Well, the reason for paying for it twice is because we have to pay loki for porting it to linux. And i'm sure loki has to pay royalties to the company who made the original game.
That said, I'm not going to buy it again because I'm not exactly wealthy. If I want to play it I'll just boot up my windows partition. Sorry Loki.
There should be some way that owners of the original can get a rebate on the linux version. Loki should not have to pay royalties for those who are buying it a second time.
I think the anime should be put under "Sections," and like some of the sections there, have articles that only show up when you click on that section. (click on "askslashdot" over to the left to see what I mean). It is certainly not important enough to be put on the main page... Also the section shold be called "comics" not "anime" -- because some people such as myself like comics but don't like anime.
Actually I have the "anime" category blocked, but blocking it doesn't seem to affect the previous-next arrows on the story page.. it only removes it from the main page.
1) The BSD utilities are a lot easier to use because they have shorter man pages and fewer command line options. Also the file sizes are a lot smaller -- which may not be a big deal on a server -- but on a floppy or embedded type machine you want to save every byte you can. I've always preferred the BSD utilities over the GNU ones for this reason (the ease of use/simplicity).
2) The license. Many people don't like the GPL for various reasons. I'm not interested in turning this into a flame war, but IMO the GPL is inferior in a number of ways.
The original Cluster mission and the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) together comprised the Solar Terrestrial Science Programme (STSP), the first 'Cornerstone' of ESA's Horizons 2000 Programme. These two missions were selected at the same time to investigate the relation between the Sun and the Earth's environment.
Since its successful launch in December 1995 SOHO has been providing fascinating new information on the effect of the Sun and the solar wind on the Earth's magnetosphere. The approval of the complete Cluster II mission means that the original STSP objectives can be fulfilled, especially now that SOHO's lifetime has been extended.
Together the two STSP missions will answer questions about an entire chain of processes: right from the Sun's very interior down to the Earth's magnetosphere. Their results will also be combined with a number of other missions within the framework of the IACG, the Inter-Agency Consultative Group.
The goals of the Cluster II mission are identical to those of the original Cluster mission lost in June 1996 and the instrument complement remains the same. The Cluster II mission is an in-situ investigation of the Earth's magnetosphere using four identical spacecraft simultaneously. It will permit the accurate determination of three-dimensional and time-varying phenomena and will make it possible to distinguish between spatial and temporal variations.
The real reason for the difficult QWERTY design is that it is to help us defeat alien invaders (aliens from space, not hispanics). The aliens will be unable to master our computer keyboards, and while they are hunt-and-pecking we can come up behind them and stick a knife in them, killing them dead. Unless you support total domination by an alien police state, I suggest you stick with QWERTY.
Right on.. I love how these PC Police[1] are all demanding Free Speech in one article and then in the next article they are complaining because they heard speech they didn't like!! Sheesh make up your minds already.
Excellent point. Even music CDs are attached to that plastic extender-thingy (that's the technical name, right??).
The purpose of this is so CDs would fit nicely in the same slots records go in. Of course, now records are irrelevant.. but I guess back when CDs were invented it was important that they fit the record store's shelves. I agree with you though that now these things are mostly to prevent theft.
I can run the game and view the various menus and briefing screens, but when it goes to 3d space combat the screen goes black or shows a bunch of garbage. (I assume it is the 3d part from the sound effects that are playing).
on the VV web page it says you need Xfree 4.0, but I am only running 3.3.6 w/ utah-glx. I'm not particularly eager to install 4.0 since I hear it is not very stable yet. I'd just like to know if it works with XFree 4.0 before I try to upgrade. So has anyone got it working?
It may appear 'saturated' because your LEDs are blinking like crazy, but the actual requests are very small. It is just a lot of small packets -- certainly not enough to 'saturate' a 768k dsl.
Take a look at that screen where it shows what other people are searching for -- this is all that is being sent (unless of course someone is downloading a file from you).
There is a free software program (sorry I can't remember the name) that lets you browse your filesystem in 3d. It's a really cool idea.. when you descend into a directory, like/etc it is supposed to be like a galaxy or something -- all the files show up as 'planets'.. Symbolic links are 'wormholes.' Damn, i wish I could remember the name of the program.
If you play Major League Baseball (i think that was the name) on the original Nintendo you can have your player run into the crowd. Just go to one of the places where the fence is at an angle and wiggle around a bit, and you can get through. ALso sometimes the ball would get stuck in the fence.

All JonKatz posts should have the word 'geek' in them (usually 10 to 20 times).
What are you talking about? It runs fine on Windows 98!
I've installed and used sendmail a few times and I swore never to do it again! It's most difficult to configure program in existence.
Really? Take a look at the new folder on your account -- "Bulk Mail." Yep, full of spam.
They can use postgresql. it's free and supposedly much better than mysql

This was the great thing about kuro5hin.org -- the readers chose the stories!!! Too bad some asshole had to ruin it for us all.

How does one turn on DMA in Linux?
LOL!

1. Political Correctness Police
Have you heard of the 'file' command? It isn't perfect, but it works most of the time.
On 'Talk of the Nation' on NPR today they are going to have Nader as the guest. Should be interesting.
