i recently undertook the task of installing q3a on my linux box. between the hard to install 3dfx drivers, and the harder to re-install xfree, i almost gave up (before a complete OS reinstall).
i think we should come up with a way to make installation easier (of drivers, etc) before we try to mass-market any popular games. sure the geeks will pay to play, but the average user would rather pop the disk into the drink holder and play than spend 4 hours recompiling his kernel and reinstalling xfree.
it disturbs me how close we are to actually building a matrix without even knowing it. were just a james bond supervillan away from complete domination.
this is kinda ot and wrthless, but i have a similar issue.
about a year ago i built my first computer. a k6-2 300 with 32 megs of ram, 4mb video card, 16bit sound, 48x cdrom.
since then i have upgraded a bit to a k6-3 475 256 megs of ram with dvd, voodoo3, 8x burner, sblive, list goes on and on and on.
the ONLY original piece of hardware is the case. so, is it still the first computer i built or no ?
all of the other old parts have goen into my girlfriends computer or my linux machine.
the answer is simple. as we grow and age, our cells are always multiplying and dividing. old skin goes away and replaced by new. yet we are still the same people.
the good news here is that there will be NO way for riaa to shut every server down. just like warez servers and whatnot, only 1,000,000 times better.
along with the argument that ISPs are not responsible for content comes the ability for every isp to set up a napster server for its users. end result ? a shitload of free music that cant be stopped. now if theres a way to link napster serevrs (like irc servers) thats even better. we can easily hit into the TBs. this is very good news indeed.
right or wrong i listen to mp3s. its an old argument and i dont care any more. i just wanna hear music
the reason nobody goes to the arcade anymore is simple. the games are about a dollar apiece(when did THIS happen, anyway ?) and you get maybe 4 minutes into the game IF your lucky (dont expect anything over 2 min).
what ever happened to the good old days when you could plunk in a quarter and play double dragon for hours ? *sigh*
oh and by the way, arcade games are not limited by the inability to keep up with consoles. arcade games are actually lucky in the respect that they are limited only by funding and the current state of technology. not by the current state of the console.
you make a good point (moderate that up), but the idea of live action video in games has been around for a while.
the problem ? variables. you just plain CANNOT have a seperate clip for each and every little thing the player could do (well you could but it would be a very short game).
another argument is the real person + real background = pseudo video. this wouldnt work either. people are stupid, but a person is smart. and a person knows when hes seeing a live character moving falsely against a live background (in a game anyway. movies are a bit better at this due to the static nature of what you see).
the point is, this idea only really applies to games where there are a certain number of variables. Myst was an EXCELLENT example of this. myst is a damn good game still, and definately a pioneer into that field. but there are only so m any places you can go.
the only way to make a dynamic game look and feel like a static film is to improve the CGI and the artwork to the point of realistic.
i think it will happen. look at how far we have come in the passed 10 years alone.
i think its os dependant. i use nt 4 at work, with ie 5. its never crashed, while the netscape i use there dr watsons VERY frequently.
i use win98 at home with ie 5. again very stable. so is netscape actually, but im very hard disk space concious, and every time i install something ie5 would magically reinstall.
i also use linux at home, and netscape has so far been rock solid.
and ill tell you why, at the risk of few karma points.
certain products are designed for certain people, BY certain people. example, the head programmer at id is a man. a heterosexual man. he likes women. he probably likes women with large breasts. and i would bet that he likes to see women with large breasts wearing next to nothing. he also makes video games. hey, why not put some attractive large breasted women wearing next to nothing in my video game ?
im betting that when someone makes a product like this, or playboy, or maxim, they have a certain demographic in mind.
if im the editor or Black Hair magazine (it exists), what do i care what white people think ? white people arent buying the magazine. now lets say i own BET and put a commercial on the air for black hair magazine. would white people call up and complain ? probably not. and if they did, would i really give a shit ? nope
i should write an article about how 'Womens World' isnt sensitive enough to my masculine needs. maybe ill send a nasty letter to the Advocate for not having enough straight issues in the pages. maybe ill even call up BET.
the point is, game makers are usually heterosexual males. and heterosexual males like big breasted nekkid chix. if you want a chick game, either make one or pay someone to make one.
companies arent as stupid as youd like to think. they spend lots o cash studying who buys their games, who reads their magazines, who watches their channel.
and about the magazines for people who like to play sim city or myst; i can tell you right now why you wont see it any time soon. because it wont sell. why should i read a magazine about old games i dont even play any more ? what is so fucking special about myst that it should get its own monthly book ?
i WANT to see naked chicks. i WANT to see gibs. i WANT to know where i can find a skin of hunter topless.
and i want a magazine that can tell me where and how.
im an @home user(and att employee, incidentally), and i frequently lurk and post to various ng's.
if i cant post from here, on @homes servers, can i just set up an nntp server for my own use and post via it ?
by the way, we do have an abuse list, and it is generally *very* long. from what i see, were playing whack the mole keeping all of the abuse to a minimum.
USENet: you need to get rid of the spam
@Home: we need more moderators, our men are working double shifts as it is. we can do it with more moderators
USENet: the newsgroups do not share your optomistic appraisal of the spam
@Home: we need more men!
USENet: well than perhaps you should tell that to the newsgroups when they impose the UDP
so i have my computer set up to say; startup - "good evening dave" error - "just what do you think youre doing, dave ?" shutdown - "im sorry dave, im afraid i cant do that"
yeah im running win98. sue me.
happy birthday HAL. as a gift, were gonna upgrade you to slackware 7.0, and build you a girlfriend out of legos
im on a rocky horror picture show cast. i play dr scott. i get naked and petrified every saturday night

the people who answer those emails are a group called KANA(i think the name may have changed recently), and i work pretty closely with them.
thier job is pretty much the same as mine; acct maintanence, billing, troubleshooting, etc.
these guys are AT&T employees, not @Home employees, and have absolutly NO control over abuse issues. the most we can do is refer it to abuse@home.com
so, knowing this, please do not email the good people at that address.
thanks
