    around here, there is USWEST and AT&T

    uswest has local phone service
    att has local phone service

    uswest has high-speed internet (dsl)
    att has high-speed internet (@home)

    uswest can use the bandwidth to send cable tv
    att OWNS the cable. we laid the lines back when we were TCI. there was a vote in november to see whether att should renew its franchise aggreement with the city, and att won that vote, hands down.

    we have to pay the city to keep access to our own lines. and they make alot of money off of it.

    meanwhile we cant touch uswests lines (locally speaking)

    seems fair to me. i work for att, but i hate my job so you cant hold that against me :)

    seriously, why would you want a black and white tv ? the only person i know who has one is my grandmother and she keeps it in the closet and never uses it (she now has a colour).

    unless your colour blind or an extreme fundamentalist, i dont see the big deal in upgrading.

    unless theres some huge price difference.

    ill GIVE you a color tv :P

    i work for AT&T (@Home support), and our network is all digital. that is, the parts of the network that provide net connections are digital. the max ive ever heard anyone getting is about 3Mbps. one lady said she got 5 once, but she only has 4 people on her node. keep in mind that we dont cap download speeds, but we do limit upstream to 128Kbps in some areas

    Unfortunately, things arent that simple.

    my mom was recently the victim of cc fraud, and heres how it went down.

    she was up in the mountains for the weekend and made a few purchases. a few days later her bank contacted her that someone had made fraudulant charges on her card. the police investigated.

    it turns out that the charges were traced back to a girl that worked at one of the shops. evidentally the girls *FRIEND* who just happened to be hanging out with her that day had gotten ahold my moms card and charged some stuff.

    the point is that the police took less than a day to go through all of this crap to find the person who did it and get her to admit it.

    finding someone who stole your cc from 'real' shopping is a hell of a lot easier than finding the culprit when its online theft

    it actually doesnt sound like a bad idea. i would suggest doing n64 games or whatnot, but we would all fight over which system is better, and new systems would be coming out too fast.

    at least with gameboy you KNOW its gonna be around a while

    i pay for stuff, when its worth it. i can justify software pirating. i wouldnt pay for photoshop, so adobe loses no cash. its an old excuse, sure, but its the truth.

    same with movies. i couldnt buy ep1 on vcd 9 months ago, but i wanted it. so i got it.

    and whatever the reason, everyone and their brother has a copy of it, and SOMEONE at lucasfilm should know that. the collectors might get it, but all in all hes gonna pass the majority of us over. and in the process hes losing some devoted fans who have waited 20+ years by making them wait longer, and trying to pass off a second rate format in the meanwhile

    the point is, whether or not your an ewreet w4rez haxxor/p1rate, if you own a dvd player, you want dvds. and since alot of people have the vcd for whatever reason, its all the worse

    dvd comes out, its great and a much needed successor to vhs
    everyone loves dvds
    dvd becomes widely used
    dvd players are made for computers(yay)
    linux geeks want to watch dvds
    linux geeks make their own player
    DVD assoc. sues linux geeks
    other clueless linux geeks boycott dvd
    clueless geeks convince clueless nongeeks to boycott
    cluelessness spreads
    dvd sales go down
    dvd dissappears or gets hard to find
    the geeks(and nongeeks) with a clue are robbed of a great format
    original linux geeks have wasted their time on a now worthless peice of software that nobody uses any more
    dvd winds up on the shelf next to divx

    is this what you want ?
    didnt think so
    this is NOT the way to get things fixed

    Why release ep1 on vcd ? I've had ep1 on vcd(illegal) since about a week after it hit theatres, and its a damn good copy. i even copied it to VHS for a friend. So why the hell would i shell out 15-20 bucks on something ive had for free for months ?

    Any kid with a decent connection, some time, and a cd burner already has this or can get it if he/she/chooses.

    Now if it were coming out on DVD with all sorts of bonuses and commentary and so on, i would happily fork over 15, 20, even 30 bucks for it, and so would alot of other /.ers and SW fans in general.

    Lucas fucked up in '99 with Jar Jar
    Now he's topping himself in 2000
    by charging us for something we got for free 9 months ago
