it depends on the type of visa he is seeking. An F1 or J1 visa would suffice for most internships, especially short term internships. Of course, he still has to get an internship/fellowship with an institution that sponsors F1/J1 visa.

the main problem comes when you're attempting to get an H1 visa - those are hard to get. You need a company to sponsor you, and they need to show that they can't find an American to do the job - that's really hard for an internship. in the past we were able to have interns, esp. W European interns, on a B1 (tourist) visa, but that has changed in many places.

if he finds an internship with an organization in the US, he can ask them if he can be an intern under a B1 visa. Might not be the best way, but it could work.

I think this is exactly the point of the story, that it is very personal. You might not hear the gurgling sounds, but you watch the missile all the way in, you see the damage, and you're expected to review it and make sure the target was struck. I don't think it's remote at all. On the contrary, it's a lot more similar to being personally involved in the killing, and as a society we're not used to it anymore. Read the first posting on this thread - http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=640311&cid=24528945 - for a good account of what it means to be a drone pilot.

It's still a long way from confirming the existance of advance life forms, and even a longer way from confirming the existance of civilization.

i would find it incredible if, after finding life, they did not find any traces of aminoacids or any other building blocks. frankly, i think not finding any evidence of life even though water existed on Mars would be a bigger discovery then finding that some single cell life existed once. but that's just me.
