That was my exact point. The original poster seemed to be confused by the statement "Adobe was responsible for the arrest." So I clued him in. Adobe has big bucks, and can make a stink if the FBI doesn't do anything. I have less bucks, and so the FBI doesn't care so much.
could we please clarify what government agency actually made the arrest and on what basis?
My guess is Adobe contacted the FBI, told them what the guy did, and had their lawyers politely explain to the Feds how that violates the DMCA. Now if I were to contact the FBI and demand they arrest the guy who DDoS'd my DSL line a few months ago (I do know who it is, and have ample evidence) they'd laugh at me.
Government for the corporations, by the corporations, and of the corporations.
Most of the people using it were idiotic theiving scum who have the morals and self-worth of a sewer rat. They were there simply to steal something they wanted and couldn't be bothered to pay for. They didn't care at all about the effect they had on the music industry, simply that they could steal with little chance of having to answer for their crime.
This is not theft. Theft is taking something from someone, so that they no longer posses it. This is copyright infringement. There is a difference.
Also, you don't seem to realize that when you buy a CD in a store, you're paying for the distribution costs of the CD. Why should I pay the same price when I download it myself, using bandwidth I've already payed for? To support the bands? Hah! Read Courtney Love's article on the music industry.
If you think any money from CDs goes towards a band, think again. The RAIA is not about making music, it's about distributing it. It should be called "The Distribution Industry"
You're telling me that there are public schools prepping kids for the SAT's four years before they'd take the test?!? Are you kidding me?
In my jr. high, batches of the smartest kids were taken off once a week to go study for the SATs. This was in 7th grade, so I was 13 at the time. Ironically I barely studied at all for the damn things, and I still scored better than most of those kids. I think that's mostly because I was relaxed and just didn't care, so I had a clearer head and could think more logically.
You even go so far as to use Microsoft's.dll and.vxd files to help you since you apparently can't figure out how to write your own drivers.
dlls and vxd files are not drivers. and we do this because the gaming companies don't release their games for our platform of choice. It's not about making Linux more like Windows, it's about making the stuff available for Windows work under Linux.
Oh, and quit whining.
Who's whining? (or "wining" if I may use such a horrible pun:)
In other words, for every one of these that is manufactured, another Commodore 64 must be destroyed. In fact, this company is making money out of destroying as many Commodore 64s as they can and will go out of business when they don't have any more to destroy.
It was my understanding that no Commodore 64s were harmed in the process of making the Sidstations. I think Elektron just bought up the remaining sid chips in existence. Now the Hardside (www.hardsid.com) you can order with no sid chip. So if you have a spare c64 laying around you can gut it for the sid. The hardsid also has a quad version which supports up to 4 sid chips. Hmm...I have 5 functioning C64s. I technically only need one....
I've owned one of these for about 6 months now, and it's the most unique, interesting synth I've ever owned. It can produce sounds you will NEVER hear another synth make. The noise from the chip is bad, but I use a noise gate or I sample it and use Cooledit to remove the noise. Either way it's definitely worth the ~$500. And Elektron is seriously one of the coolest companies I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. The guys who designed it are on the mailing list and are incredibly helpful and friendly.
As for some of the complaints (memory loss, flakiness) most of those can be contributed to bad power supply. It doesn't come with one, and some people go out and pick up the cheapest one they can find. the Sidstation requires a reliable power supply. I got a nice AC adaptor and surge protector and haven't had a problem yet.
And for the people saying it's hard to program I only say "WHERE DO I GET WHAT YOU'RE SMOKING!??!"
Seriously, this synth is so incredibly easy to program. The only thing that took me awhile to get used to was the tables, because it's an idea I've never heard of/played with before. Once I got used to it, making sounds was easy. Of course, even if I never use it again, it's still worth it for me, cuz I loved the Commodore64, and the Sidstation makes a nice addition to my 5 functioning C=64s:)
Anyway, I really can't say enough good things about Elektron and the Sidstation. I'm just anxiously awaiting the Machinedrum (their next product)
As far as the other brands, stay away from Toshiba; they're the manufacturer of the cheapest (and shoddiest) laptops around. HP isn't much
I have to disagree with this. I have a Toshiba Portege 3025CT and it runs great. I've had it for over a year now and haven't had a problem yet. Everything it came with is supported under Linux. As for Sony Vaios, the only one I would consider buying is the new one with the transmeta chip in it. And the only reason I'd consider it is the size.

Given that Florida's election is being decided by a 400-vote difference, with 19,000 botched votes thrown out, I'd say the impossibility of clicking on two presidential choices at the same time makes this system a huge win.
I heard some guy on the news saying that in 1996 over 14,000 votes were thrown out for double voting in Palm Beach county. Anyone know of a link to stats on that?
The broken user interface on our existing punch-cards system is probably going to give us the wrong President of the United States.
No, it's probably going to give us the candidate YOU don't want as president. I voted for Bush, because he wasn't part of the administration to give us DMCA and UCITA. Nor is he squarely in the pockets of the entertainment industry (MPAA/RIAA). Granted, Bush's big "war on drugs" push bothered me, but drugs are illegal now. Have been illegal for awhile. Clinton/Gore got pretty tough on drugs. And I can still make two fone calls and get 10 hits of LSD. *shrug*
So Bush didn't get the popular vote. The electoral college was set up so that states with lower populations could still play a major role in national elections. Both candidates agreed to play by these rules when they started their campaigns, and for Gore's people to now be screaming "but he got the popular vote, he should be president" is juvenile and petty. If you're going to complain, complain before you lose.

The only good thing about going to college was my Sci-Fi East and West course. It examined cultural differences between the east and the west via their science fiction. We had to read Solaris, and I loved it. Lem is a great writer. Anyone going to the University of Pittsburgh is recommended to take that class. We even got to watch The Fly, The Terminator, and Metropolis.
I live in Pittsburgh, and two weeks ago my girlfriend had (hopefully) her final experience with Circuit City. Her father bought her a computer right before college (95-96) and it NEVER worked 100%. He got her the extended 3 year warrenty, and within a month the mouse had stopped working. She tried other mice, and they didn't work. She took it back to Circuit City, and they sent it away for 2-3 weeks, she got it back, and everything else started to go. Finally, last year they said they'd replace it. New machine? Nope, they gave her an old packard bell machine which was pretty obviously someone else's return. Right from the start the sound does work, and it randomly dies on her. BSODs, lock ups, random reboots while typing papers, etc. She works tech support for an ISP, and I've spent 4-5 years doing tech support for various companies and schools. Neither of us could figure out what was wrong. My guess was the memory was bad and the harddrive controller was going. So we take it back one last time 2 weeks ago, and the manager refuses to even talk to us like we're humans. he treats us both like we're morons. So I rip into him. Finally they gave her a credit for the full amount that was paid for the first computer.
Each time she had to get her first two computers fixed, she didnt' have it for a minimum of 2 weeks. over 24 weeks without a computer over 4 years. Personally, I'm SO happy to see legislation like this, because Circuit City has a great scam going on.
That's nothing. Dr. Forester took this to another level by suspending a giant tube from the SoL. It was big enough for Crow to escape back to earth! NASA is obviously way behind the times.

I care VERY VERY MUCH! I'm (trying to be) a musician, and currently I only keep windows around for the music apps (cakewalk, cubase, rebirth, soundforge, cooledit, etc)
Think of it this way: Many of you complain about the lack of games for linux, and how you only keep windows for gaming.
Well the same is true for me and audio apps! Just because some people have different interests, don't dismiss their voice.
>Why is it that 3rd world countries rather have nukes than well fed people?
well, generally they're 3rd world countries due to having a fucked up government/lack of resources.
I personally can't wait till the oil dries up in the middle east, so we can say "Guess what, you have nothing we want anymore. Enjoy the wasteland you call home."
This is such good news. I have started working on an audio editing app for manipulation 3d sound, but without an api it's been slow going. This weekend I'm gonna pick apart this api, learn it inside and out, and start coding.
