It was disconnected until 1973 (or so) when the government required large businesses to offer it. Over the years "large business" was redefined to be 50 or more employees. My employer presently has 49 employees and has no interest in increasing by even one employee... that 50th employee will be an expensive chap.

We DVR everything we watch and skip right over the loud commercials. Now instead of watching commercials, I don't even pay attention to them. The advertisers have shot themselves in the foot. Next thing you know, the TV stations will start playing more commercials per hour. Oh wait they do. 52 minute episodes of Star Trek TOS are pared down to less than 45 minutes now.... AND the TV stations begin the next show with the credits of the previous show in a PIP window. Good for them.

  9. Re:too much regulation! on Quiet Victories Won In the Loudness Wars · · Score: 2

Yeah, the industry will choke itself to death. I quit FM radio years ago b/c I got tired of the screaming car commercials... and all the stations timed their commercials so you couldn't change stations. I started listening to XM, which in turn added commercials to their premium channels. So now I simply listen to music from my mp3 player or audio books on my drive to work. If everyone did this, the industry would slowly die... and perhaps on their way down, they fix what caused their market to shift away from them. We don't need government oversight b/c the industry will eventually regulate itself even if it kills itself.

But I can't get the educational channels I want without upgrading to the 300 channel package. Screw the whole thing. So not only am I paying for 16 minutes of adverts per hour, I'm paying for reruns. We often check the DVR toward the end of the week and find nothing has been recorded (ie reruns this week). The schools tout their student/teacher ratio, but in reality, the ratio is really student/(teacher-15). Why so many administrators? Department of Ed paperwork requirements. No child left behind paperwork. I swear , the "free money" from the federal government is killing them... really a point of diminished returns.

Kids going to school without breakfast because their parent(s) can't afford it? Surely you mean WON"T afford it. The school never follows up on their free/reduced lunch applications - they get more money from federal funding for those kids than they get from the paying students. They have no incentive.

As for the parent(s) who won't afford breakfast or lunch.... those kids seem to have cell phones, buy year books for $130 and wear sneakers which cost as much as a netbook. In the USA, our welfare programs seem to cover the basics so that they can afford the nice extras.
