I would refuse to pay the extra bills and keep paying the service fees. Then I would take them to small claims court if they didn't agree. It seems clear cut enough that they have no room for being so unfair.
He was right on, Java is an extremely well designed language with many built in features taken into account at the languages' inception, that would be tacked on libraries in other languages.
All that crap about standards and other companies extending them is pure bullshit. Good examples are SQL extensions made by people like Oracle and OpenGL entensions made by people like Nvidia are completely different. They give extra options to someone using the standard without actually breaking why the standard is in place to begin with. Microsoft had to settle with Sun because they broke Sun's license agreement. If they thought something needed to be added to java they could have gone through the same process that I could go through if I thought something should be added to java. Instead they put their own infections into it and defeated the purpose by making java that could only run on Microsoft VM's. They broke the standard, they didn't extend it in any way. There is a definite difference.
I have thought about this sometimes and haven't come up with a definite solution because there eally isn't one. But I think that most languages in widespread use are good, but have some flaw in them.
I think that java approches being a really great language, but stops short because it is so god awful slow. It is also very verbose and although I like it, it doesn't go as fast as perl, python, or php. What it does have is stability, consitency, and standard libraries that come with every runtime environment. If perl 6 had classes remenicent of pythong, came with a full featured standard GUI (TK is quick, dirty, and fast but doesn't compare to the feature set of swing), standard thread, standard complex sound IO, and standard socket set that's more straightforward, I would never use anything else. I know its alot, but if that was there, then I think the language would be much more complete, then other stuff could be added with modules.

Don't worry man, your luck is about to change, there is no way the PS2 will succeed now, and if you want a sure winner, go with the gameboy advance when it comes out! (or buy one from Japan for $180).
How could they miss the late Gumpei Yoko (spelling?) He made the Metroid series, and just because there haven't been any recent games people seem to overlook. And what about the Zelda series?
There is a saying that you are only as good as your last movie/game/album. If people didn't like final fantasy 8 and 9 they aren't going to spend $350 to get final fantasy 10. Sony is going to be obliviated by nintendo and the x-box.
Even if the gamecube was equal in every other way (which it isn't) final fantasy and metal gear aren't going to hold up to marios/zelda/metroid/sonic the four greatest selling most well know series of games of all time. No way in hell.

Alot of people are making valid points against your argument but I think there are a few fundamental ones. Sony is not making enough headway. I only know one person that even lives with someone who has one. Sony has to dominate before the gamecube and x-box come out. It is expensive and the gamecube will be $200 when it comes out and of course the prices of both will probably decrease unless of course sony doesn't get their supply chain in check in which case price won't matter because the few that get out will be sold anyway. Think about this though, when the gamecube does hit ( I know its a long time away) who the hell is going to buy a PS2 still? The prices for the PS2 and gamecube will probably be about the same by then, and the gamecube will be the hot new things. If Sony does try to compete pricewise, they are really going to leak money. I can't wait until the gamcube and x-box and I don't even care one bit about the PS2. It doesn't have any games at all that I want to buy.
I think that Sony will get wiped out in the gaming market in a few months. I don't think even Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid can save them, they will be a few killer games after the console has been out for 10 months, which is not good enough. People seem to think nintendo will have the young market and sony and x-box will have the older market. I think that nintendo will completely sweep the young market, nintendo and x-box will duke it out for the older market, and sony will get crushed.
As for a dvd player, think about how many people have them now, and then think in 6 months who won't have them. Anyone who wants one will have one by then, DVD playback won't be a big factor anymore.
Right on, I'm 19, and Super Metroid was the grewatest game ver made I think. Once I play metroid in 3D I will able to cross of one of my life's todo items.
Its not just density, if that was true, then New York City would have fiber to indivuiduals. (It wouldn't be that hard I don't think, apartments would have to be wired like dorm rooms are now). Running fiber has alot of problems associated with it, and running to the home is very expensive, right now, it will take alot of time to recoupe the costs associated with it.
I think you undershot the PC specs, this is what I bought for $950 dollars, no shit.
Huge, well designed case, 300W recommended by arstechnica
Asus motherboard recommended by tom's hardware, 133Mhz FSB, Ultra ATA 100, onboard RAID
Athalon thunderbird 950Mhz
256 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 32MB DDR
Soundblaster live 5.1 X-gamer
6x DVD drive
60GB IBM deskstar
a 15" monitor would cost maybe $120, a 17" not much more.
Just to drive it into the ground, I want MacOS X to take over, but there is no way you can get the same kind of price/performance from a Mac, not even in the same fucking ballpark.
I think that strong internals are more important. No reason giving ppl a crappy system with beautiful gui's. I don't think that is very usefull and that is why I left the Win/Mac machines.
I don't think there is any reason to argue over which is more important, they both need to always be moving towards perfection.
there are portable radeon and geforce cards now in laptops, so a laptop can be good for gaming. 1.2Ghz Athlon minum huh? funny how the best processor is the minimum, I wonder why more 1.2 Ghz athalons aren't being sold. I am building a computer for my friend that has a 950 Mhz Athalon and a Radeon 32 DDR, I thought that would be enough, shame on me.
This should be mentioned, if it hasn't already. There is a great gameboy advance development site at http://www.agbdev.net/gbadev/ You can find links there to demo's, and all sorts of tools and tutorials.
I think you missed the point, that was what people originally said about linux, try reading at a lower threshhold. And I wasn't talking about Unix not being accespted by corporations, I was talking about Berlin not being accepted by a purely corporate environment. I was saying that Unix used to be mostly used in corporate settings, but now most hackers have access to their own personal computer running Linux, and that is where it would be possible for this to make headway if it turns out to be any good.
I should have said it but I was getting at something like Tk. I wouldn't want to rewrite the Gimp in it, but I can create a 30 line GUI front end to something if I want to.
I would refuse to pay the extra bills and keep paying the service fees. Then I would take them to small claims court if they didn't agree. It seems clear cut enough that they have no room for being so unfair.
This was brought first to newsforge so it isn't like he is posting something and making it news, it already is news.
Super Metroid doesn't run on a gameboy it was for super nintendo.

All the stuff I got sent about Comdex was that it was all about .NET

128 bit color? 24 bit color most people can no longer distiguish between individual changes in color, 32 bit color is quite enough.

Go to a bar...there are usually women there. 8^)
Women are only a a way to escape from the reality. The reality that you don't have any video games play.
