I have always thought of creating a program like making a samurai sword. I know it sounds weird, but here's why. A sword is supposed to be an elegant and simple tool or weapon that really has many uses. Software, likewise should be the same way. You wouldn't want a sword that was mostly handle would you? what would be the point of that? In the same respect you wouldn't want a web browser that was all buttons and had a small windows for looking at a web page. And you wouldn't want a heavy sword, that's dull and breaks all the time would you? (think netscape 6). This is how I would break down some of the software that I use, using the sword analogy.
1. Windows - Large sword, somewhat dull, extra protrusions that make it only fit in their custom sheath. Dullness makes it harder to cut yourself, so it is more for those who don't want to develop enough skill to use a sharper sword, don't think they need one, or are scared or cutting themselves.
2. Linux - balanced different, awkward at first, but better once you get used to it. Really sharp, really durable, doesn't break, cuts through most problems easily. Not for the uninitiated. Blades everywhere, flexible but complex. Not just one knife, but lots of specialty knives designed for cutting through anything, each one for something different.
3. Winamp - a sharp, solid dagger, lightwieght, customizable with different blades, different designs for the handle.
4. IE - seemingly small handle, large blade, elegant but very fragile.
5. AIM - cuts through most of what it needs to, but is getting kind of heavy (bloated) not as bad as ICQ I think.
6. Gimp - Solid, sharp small handle, long blade, even comes with tools for sharpening. (think script-fu)
I think linux being really mainstream would be a dream come true. Becaus its free the bigger it gets, the harder it would be for one company to hoard and abuse because even a huge company like MS wouldn't be able to exscape the neccesity of compatibility. The more people using linux the better I think. It wouldn't mean abuse, it would mean improvement which is not the case with alot of other companies especially Microsoft. So bring it on, it can only make things better.
1 in 250 of hitting someone? If you think about it, the odds of hitting someone being that high would mean that the odds of it hitting something at all would be pretty huge. Maybe not a person, but a building, a car, etc. Seems that this will probably be on the news when it happens because of the choas it might cause, and of course the obligatory paranoia from the average person that will follow.
The article said that Microsoft could hijack all the work that has gone into linux, but it failed to mention that whatever they do, anyone could just hijack back, especially other experienced linux comanies. I think the guy who wrote the article probably has alot of stock in Microsoft and thought this might be a good way to use his influence to raise it up a few points.
Having a wealth of porn on freenet is not all that bad. If that's where people go to get their porn, then that's where they will start to go to get other stuff too. Freenet, like the internet itself could have porn eventually draw people in in bulk. Think about it, if the internet never had any porn on it, why would people who didn't care about computers, or video games have gotten on the internet at all five years ago? Think real hard and try to remember people getting the internet that you didn't expect to be the kind of people to use it. Maybe they didn't want to get sports scores or read the news after all. I'll bet it brought in more people than you might think.
Everyone might have been wearing maroon in the scene with kid and the gun because at that time Bruce Willis was helpless. I think you are right, it could be a symbol of weakness, not for Bruce Willis, but for everyone, including his wife and his son.
When Bruce Willis goes to the comic book place to see Samuel L. Jackson, above the doors there are letters that say "Black &" and as they pan into view the camera stops at "&" and Bruce Willis walks in from the left. Intentional? I have no idea!
That is a great theory! I am going to have to go see the movie again to see if it holds up. I have to say I hope you are wrong so I can be surprised some more, but still. Maybe though, Bruce Willis is not the true hero. Maybe the child is. I know this is more unfounded, but he could have inherited the super attibutes of Bruce Willis, and, he is even more of an opposite to Samuel L. Jackson, because he is young and Elijah Peirce is old, inocent, naive and grounded, while Elijah is minipulative, and does horrible things.
I don't even read comics books although I still loved the sheer quality of the movie. I didn't even truly realize the similarities until it was spelled out. So, it does make a great movie off the basis of comics. But you are right, it was fantastic.
The movie was excellent, but what really tied it all together and made the suspense potent was the incredible soundtrack. It is all composed specifically for the movie (a definite sign of quality) and gives emotion to everything that happens. Download it from an 18 year old on a cable modem near you!
PS: I am an 18 year old on a cable modem so the forementioned stereotype applies to me too.
You can always put in your own garbage collection calls yourself, which would solve the automation problem so you wouldn't feel at the mercy of the VM.
Right on, java is great, because for the most part its easy, simple, clear, and has everything built in so there isn't lots of confusion as to what the API's are like. I know java is slow, but in alot of cases for me, I am glad just that I can do things like sound programming, because I and not very good at getting down complicated C libraries, because, well, I'm not a very good C programmer.
Watch Ninja Scroll 2 Jubei's revenge, it has the most abrupt ending ever. It doesn't make a lick of sense throughout the whole thing, what I thought was a long introduction turned out to be the whole frickin movie!
Ninja Scroll is in my opinion the best anime movie ever. It is stylistic, elegant, action packed, a little on the weird side, and so so cool. Don't get the sequel though, it makes absolutely no sense. Dragon Ball Z has to be the best series I have ever seen. The cartoon network episodes are horribly cut and dubbed now, but the japanese versions are cool as hell. The plot just keeps on going.
The current bid is at $17,400 And the reserve isn't met yet. How much does he/she think they are going to get from this? Oh well, some little kid is going to have a very merry christmas.
When this comes out, I am going to buy one and burn a CD with as many emulators and games as I can stuff onto it. That would be worth having it alone I think, to be able to play everything super nintendo and below on it, maybe playstation, maybe nintendo 64.
Also, I bet companies like Loki want to see this happen, simultanious (spelling?) releases of games for both the console and the PC. And they already have alot of games that could be ported with little effort.
And the best part... open source game projects! oh hell yeah.

Only 5 percent of human DNA is useful and the other 95 percent is wasted? Maybe thats why people like beer so much.

I think it would be great if you created a major computing breakthrough! Wait, you weren't talking about you doing it were you.
Oh yeah, and how exactly will micrsoft be saved by linux? It didn't give any mention as to what positive effects linux will have on them.

I'll believe it when I C it.

Maybe you should try posting your comments only once. It is disrepectful to the people who's resources you waste.

Don't forget about metroid, that's why I would buy one.
I've never got crap for selling anything. Never
You should have tried to sell more 83 year super delux mega warranties that cover stuff like nuclear war.

At the same time, Perl itself has an unapolagetic unix flavor
