Problem is that we humans end up identifying ourselves with our ideas, and with how we see ourselves. We cannot tell ourselves apart from our identity, so we end up defending it just as we would defend ourselves. This makes very hard for us to open up to different ideas or different ways.
Also, this 'identity' is a criterion that allows us to tell 'us' apart from 'them', hampering our capacity of compassion, ie any capacity of recognizing that those on the other side are, after all, not so different from us.
To convince someone to kill someone else, you always have to create a strong identity that makes the potential victim 'different' than the potential killer. This is true at any scales, from nations at war to family quarrels.
Probably you moderate Muslims should stop being so passive, stop hiding and reclaim your religion from the loonies that hijacked it. Disappearing every time the crazies go insane is the last thing you should do. Take the responsibility of your beliefs and confront the crazies, as a Muslim you are in a better position to do it than anyone else.
Because if you aren't your scheme becomes an Epic Fail and if you are you have zero clue what being an American is about.
Uhm, Military might, information controlled by megacorporations, complete ignorance that there exists a world outside the borders, religious fanaticism, and screaming "democracy" and "freedom" like they had any meaning?
I am ashamed to be a researcher. Scientific journals are built on reliability and reputation, if they are willing to squander it for a few extra bucks, the entire peer-review process is dead, and modern scientific advancement with it.
I'm Italian and I'm quite confident that the Government wants just a slice of the media hype. When the whole thing will disappear into its own nothingness, it will have been already long forgotten and the media will not even cover it. That's how it works.
President Evo Morales is an Ayamara, an oppressed minority, and has won election supported by grassroot movements. He's more Obama than Obama himself, and Bolivia's was a lesson in democracy we Westerners should take at heart.
Call me naive, but honestly guys, can't you live without watching the last **AA blockbuster? How's your life going to be actually affected if you give up your weekly fix of entertainment? Stop going to the cinema, stop buying movies and CDs. Are you completely unable to find something better in your life?
Those in power have no reason whatsoever to change the status quo.
High government officials should forfeit their right to possession (ie, all their wealth) to the state as well as their right to privacy for the duration of their office.
In this way they would have only idealistic incentives to run for a seat and it would be extremely hard to corrupt or threaten the officer without making it public.
Great. That's the way of Science: correcting itself and rehabilitating ideas if they get proof.
Lamarck's theory didn't work, but it was a legit scientific theory nonetheless, in that it actually took the risk of telling us something about nature: right or wrong, nothing reduces the scientific rigor and dedication of Lamarck's work and his contribution to biology.
This is a legit revision of mainstream evolution theory, and has nothing to do with non-falsifiable, religious crap.
Well, the insects wouldn't have to kill ALL species to destabilize the system.
If just a few key species where strongly affected, the entire ecosystem, in land and water, may have collapsed in a chain reaction.
Not only dinosaurs died, and this mass extinction wasn't the only nor the largest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian-Triassic_extinction_event .
The point is that you don't really need special events to trigger the collapse and restabilization of a low-entropy system.
Ok, ok, It was a bad interpretation from Comcast.
But I'm surprised that most of the comments are about security and privacy.
As I see it this would not have been controlling everything you do and use it against you.
This is a lot more subtle.
This is deciding for you what you watch.
The latest choice available, which program to select, is kindly made by someone else.
This is for getting us used to someone else deciding for us, this is for making us even more passive and accepting than we are now.
This is far more scary than security and privacy.
So, we have some service provider that have to monitor that what they provide is not used for illegal activities. This is such a powerful concept!!
For the very reasons we apply it to ISPs, we should apply it to weapon manufacturing! Weapons can be used in very bad ways! Weapon manufacturers must keep track of the weapons and take them back whenever there may be suspicion of improper use, where "improper use" often means someone's death! Of course, there may be some technical difficulties in doing that, but we're speaking about *homicide* and *wars*!!
I'm sure that when this proposal will reach the govt, it will be immediately adopted...

This.
One thousands times this.
I wish I had points to mod you to the sky.

"Everything *I* want" != "Everything *Mr.Jobs* wants"
Yay, great!
So why don't we zero the taxes, so that consumers can have the product for as cheap as possible?
Or am I missing something important?

Can we?
Please please please!
Do we really need our weekly fix of Corporate Entertainment (TM)?

Saying just 'Lamarck was wrong' passes a bad message about science.
Science is not made of right or wrong, is made of ideas that are proposed and tested... Wrong ideas are often necessary to develop right ones.
Lamarck didn't have Darwin's great intuition, but he was a great biologist and tried to give a *scientific* explanation.
Anyway, I agree.
I confused evolution with adaptation.
So, Darwin's evolution is not the only evolution?
