For all of you non-austinites wondering why in the world a theater would do this. You have to understand the drafthouse. It's basically a bar with a big TV screen that shows movies. For the good movies you spend a good 30minutes to an hour sitting waiting for the movie. There's so few chairs and so many patrons that you have to get there early and most people like to just hang out and drink beer and chat before the movie.
So, now you can surf the net before the movie starts - big deal.
Hey dave, How the hell are ya - don't feed the trolls;)
We all know that all you need for a 'workstation' is super bandwidth between a sputtering CPU and 1000 polygon CPU.
I've got a feeling SGI unleased a few marketing droids to pump up their 'new' release of the same broken V12 chips (see clipping planes and 3D texture).
Ok I rescind. If Qt3 supports multi-head machines, that's going to make a lot of people happy (me at least;) There is no need to contact Trolltech and tell them to support something they're already planning to support.
Some people use multiple monitor machines without Xinerama and thats where the QT issues come into play (e.g. if you want screen:0.0 to talk to:0.1). A single framebuffer'ed window manager should work fine with the existing QT (Windows might pop up in the middle of the two monitors, but that's just a wee nuisance.)
QT has known about the need for mulitple monitor support for several years now. I have requested it to be added, but just got the standard "We'll evaluate your request" form letter. I talked with one of the KDE developers and he had worked on a hack to get it to work, but it was just that, a hack.
I know we have a lot of zealotry and a lot of 'we must have *this*' for linux to be successful rants. But, for a window manager not to be able to support varying desktop configurations - that's unacceptable. In fact I use dual head everyday (on Irix) and I feel that this way of using your computer is going to become more mainstream than QT is anticipating. It's very nice. And with the price of a 19 inch and a GeForceMX so cheap, it's hard not to deny the urge and upgrade your standard linux box.
I don't know if it's a QT backwards compatibility issue, or what. But *please*, everyone who deems multi-monitor support important (especially in KDE), drop an email to Trolltech (the QT guys) and let them know.
For every good recommendation there's a least 2 bad ones. I ordered SWBell.net at the beginning of June (I'm in Austin, BTW). They canceled my order 3 times without notifying me. I called them up and had to 're-order' it after each cancellation. They blamed it on restructuring or some random problem they were having on that day. Finally after the 3rd cancellation and a phone call to them every single day for a week (I'm not making this up) - they told me I was 'red-flagged' and they could not hook me up. I have no idea what this means. I'm sure they will say its some kind of signal to house problem, but I'm sceptical.
I've since ordered and had Warner Cable roadrunner installed. They installed it a week after I ordered it and I've had no problems with it. My next door neighbor has it too and I've noticed no bandwidth problems - I average at least 1.4M both ways.
I contacted the Texas PUC (Public Utilities Commision) to complain, but they don't seem to care. We really have no outlet to vent accept in urging others to use a competitor.
It's their service, so why all the crying. Don't they have a right to do what they want with their technology. Why not use all the alternative messsangers instead.
there's a giant chasm of sound between 96bits and 128bits. I don't know why anyone would buy a $269 mp3 player that couldn't perform as well as standalone mp3 players for less.
I had suggested to them several times that a crossbreed toolkit could be called 'Informer':-)
Or, 'Preventor'.
I think the Performer team is catching on - there might be some notification schemes soon in Performer like Inventor sensors. Remember, the reason performer is still alive is because of the Defense department likes it. So, since there really isn't a need to pick a tank and spin it like a CAD model - performer will stay a vis-sim toolkit.
Oh come on. Have you ever used an Intergraph machine? Where's this impressive power? Why are they going out of business? Why did they sell the graphics business to 3D Labs?
The Nvidia chips blow away any Intergraph solution - even the ones that are thousands of dollars over priced. The Low end PC graphics market (i.e. gaming market) has all but gobbled up the mid-range market. People buy $10K Maya to put on their $3K NT machine, why not a linux machine? I do agree that maybe this is a plan by SGI to move more Linux boxen. Maybe they should just throw in the box with every Maya purchase. THat'd give Linux some momentum. Doesn't SGI own some of Red Hat anyway?
SGI is reeling. This might be some of the death throws to spawn off Alias like they did MIPS. Their 330 machine is the only machine that comes out of the box OpenGL hardware ready. Even with that niche they still are having trouble making money. This doesn't bode well for Graphics on Linux, nonwithstanding all these new announcements of forthcoming releases. The Fact of the matter is that OpenGL is standing still while Direct X is providing features that developers want. Linux's survival, as a desktop, will depend on whether or not the OpenGL ARB gets off the ass or not.
I was unable to get FreeS/Wan to work with the newest Cisco routers (running 3DES). It would get past the authentication stage, but the Cisco beast would send some extra packets that totally confused FreeS/Wan.
Has anyone been able to get FreeS/Wan talking to Cisco?
I've been waiting to do this self install for over a month (I had a scheduled date of July 12th). I decided to check how my order was doing and after 2 hours of phone calls I found out that SWB (Southwestern Bell) hadn't entered the order, yet. THe SWB tech (using that term loosely) that took my order entered in a bunch of notes, but never applied me for service. I was furious when I was told this. However, all I get is the we'll try to expedite your order, but we're swamped, we have to do line tests, blah blah. So I'm in for another month of waiting. SWB has turned over their DSL to someone called ASI. ASI complains that the SWB system is a mess and the levels of beaucracy involved are 3 or 4 tier. The DSL storm has taken these ancient companies by surprise and they simply can't handle the demand. Don't get me started on how I was told a Linux box wouldn't work (it ran beautifully on my old DSL line). I really wish there was more competition in this area so SWB et al. wouldn't get away with such horrible service, anti-competive practices, and inflated prices. What can I do to let SWB know that this isn't acceptable? Do the telco's have us by the balls? Are their any other ways to get DSL service without going through your local telco? Plain and simple: SWB sucks (SWB uses SBC for DSL, by the way).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Microsoft hasn't paid taxes in a long time.

DONT use SWBell.net if you have a choice.

Although I don't always agree with Tom's sensationalistic style, it looks like he spotted the rat.
