For the few lawyers and all the non lawyers: Why is there no client attorney privilege? I mean, the case is 'possible fraud', right? We 'know' who's right & wrong, but isn't there's no innocent before guilty in fraud cases?
I fail to see how this is a troll. If people were paid to find bugs in software, it would make the code review process that much more exciting, ne? I mean, most people look at code review & QA as a chore, right? Some people get paid to use it, but I bet users would be all over something like that.
Geeks of all sorts would rally round the two, cause we can understand two damn well. And 3 billion for 20 years DOES seem a bit excessive. But whatever, I still think a time limit would be better than financial limit.
Why didn't you post this question to any SDL mailing lists or forums? Or gamedev.net or flipcode.com?
It's not Linux's answer to DirectX. It's MacOS' and BeOS' as well. Each version of the library will optimize to its specific platform, you just have to get the compiler for it, make the adjustments, and zerg's your daddy. Of course the abstraction will slow you down a bit, but for getting your game cross platform with ease that's an incredibly cheap price.
Of course, the tres nifty slashback would be for you to actually release the game cross platform across all four.:)
Actually a similar argument was used to justify a kuro5hin poll over who would take over after the US was crushed. Or something similar.

No, I don't think you bit a troll, but I do think you bit a youngster. I thought the same way he did before you reminded me that yes, IBM used to be a monopoly as well. What does this mean? Does this mean that IBM will not be trustworthy as an Open Source code contributer? Or does it mean that IBM will provide the drivers to let Linux run on CPRM enabled harddrives? (which I understand was one of the biggest concerns about these mofos, that you can't use OSes other than Windows because they're the only ones with good drivers and the hds will shut down if you access them incorrectly.) Honest, I don't think he's trolling, the whole situation is very confusing.
Folding@Home (foldingathome.stanford.edu) is a distributed computing effort to understand protein folding. It will possibly increase our understanding of medicine & nanotechnology. (I'm an idiot, yes, go read the site for more details plz.)
They offer Windows, Linux, & Solaris clients, you can offer to help them with the other OSes they're working on (OSX, OS9, BSD, and IRIX).
You know damn well and good that distributed.net will eventually crack whatever key they're working on. I question the usefulness, technique, and search space of seti@home. Folding@Home has actual implications for us right here, right now. If you don't trust this United Devices people, but you'd like to put your spare CPU cycles to good use, please check out Folding@Home. It has to be better than just "sticking with xscreensaver".
Notes for Windows users: The screen saver is pretty but the console version will run while you're doing work (not just while you're sleeping) with no performance hit (lowest priority possible process). The screen saver also had some stability issues when I first checked it out (1.2something). Supposedly they've been fixed now (1.34) but I haven't had a chance to check on it.
I'd guess they were trying to prevent cybersquatters or something. There's too much code in the BeOS that belongs to other companies... Be, Inc. would have to gain permission from all of them if they wanted to Open Source the OS. Basically all we can do nonstop updating of OpenTracker & OpenDeskbar, but that's about it.

Good luck with the project, I'd love to see a syllabus if you ever finish.
I just read about Markov chains in DDJ. What do you suppose was the input text before the output was generated? Because the output can't just be created from the aether, right?
You make some good points about highways, but the analogy doesn't make any sense. How many casualties are we going to get from lots and lots of fiber? What could possibly be wrong with lots and lots of people who didn't have fat pipes having fat pipes? If you're worried about connectivity, just shut it off and step away from the computer, right? The solution to the ills of technology is more technology. Problems with smog? Clean emission cars & stuff. We're not destroying any previous infrastructure (railroads) to build the new stuff (roads).

Everyone and there mom has said that if you want to talk to AIM, you do it on AOL's terms and use TOC. It's not that fucking hard. What does libfaim do? It uses Oscar. What were these people expecting?
The conditions for opening AOL's chat services included some sneaky clause, so they don't really have to do it. It was covered on slashdot a while back.
Also, anytime TOC hiccups, the TiK newbies go slightly bonkers, so are people sure that this isn't just a server hiccup? An incredibly extended server hiccup is not likely, but shit happens...
