Let's try again with the car analogy. What about if your car doesn't have an alarm system in it, and it gets broken into? Should the government be punishing the car owner, the car manufacturer, or the criminal? If the government really wants to get involved, let's form a SWAT team that tracks down and kills the people making malicious software.

I'm surprised a resolution of 15m wasn't enough. At the supposedly alarming rate that they are receding, wouldn't you think there wouldn't be such a need for this kind of precision?

The plan I heard described a network of objects in your house that can work to optimize energy usage, coupled with an incentive strategy on the part of the electric company to encourage customers to be more efficient. You're correct; it's easy to see a benefit to the power company at a large scale, but without an incentive that shares the benefit with customers, nobody is going to go along with this. I love how, in this case, basic economics can be used to save everyone money and maybe preserve the environment too.

Smart Grid technology is actually just around the corner. I was just listening to the CEO of Cisco talk about how they're trying to make a big push into this industry, a quick search turned up this; http://www.cisco.com/web/strategy/energy/smart_grid_solutions.html

  9. Ctrl-Tab Switching on Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 Adds Private Browsing · · Score: 1

I'm glad they're taking out the Ctrl-Tab switching. I use a logitech mouse with a tilting scroll wheel, which adds two extra buttons. I currently have one direction of the tilt mapped to CTRL+Tab and the other direction to Ctrl+Shift+tab, so that I can browse through my tabs just by flicking the side of my scroll wheel. The tab switching feature screwed this up because Ctrl-Tab would have swapped back and forth instead of always moving over to the tab to the right.

This could actually be useful if they applied machine learning techniques to allow the browser to remember which engine works best on which site. As long as switching the rendering engine doesn't take too long, you could probably get a decent overall boost in performance.

  12. Spore isn't even multiplayer on EA Forum Ban Will Now Mean EA Game Ban · · Score: 2, Interesting

I haven't bought spore, but I have played through much of it. It really isn't even a multiplayer game aside from downloading content from other users to be added to your own single-player game. What purpose would banning a player from Spore serve? Are they trying to tell us that they would ban people from a single-player game?

  13. Forward everything but the spam on Good Email For Kids? · · Score: 1

If you don't want your kids having access to the spam folder, use gmail to filter it, and then automatically forward everything that ends up in the inbox to another email address. As long as you never give out that second email address, it isn't likely that you will start getting spam sent to it. I've never done this and I don't use gmail, but there must be a way to forward your inbox to another account.

  14. Stockholm Syndrome on Studies Confirm That Bad Boys Get More Girls · · Score: 1

The next study should investigate the connection of this finding to Stockholm Syndrome. My take on this is that "bad boys" don't get more women simply because they are mean, but because a single nice act is much more noticeable when it isn't expected. The nice guys become predictably nice, and women expect nothing less from them. A guy who is generally an asshole, on the other hand, gets noticed every time he does something even a little nice. This is why nice guys who decide to try being a jerk for a week or so fail; it is their mean actions that stand out.

In comparison, this works exactly the same as Stockholm Syndrome. Hostages become accustomed to their captors' brutality, and are surprised and grateful whenever a captor grants them a small amount of compassion.

The lesson here, guys, is that paying attention or showing compassion to a woman is something to be done only in moderation. Too little and they start to avoid you, too much and they begin to expect it.

  16. There have always been stupid people on Getting The Public To Listen To Good Science · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is not a new problem. People have always been ignorant of science. The current trend actually seems to be going in the right direction. These days there are far less people burned for being witches than in the past. Ignorance is a human flaw, and it can never be completely eradicated. I'm not saying that ignorance towards science isn't a problem, just that when you look at the big picture, the world is much better off today than ever before.
