Unlimited energy won't save the world, we'd just die from the heat given off by our technology (waste heat) instead of global warming (sunlight).

  5. Google books? on Google Starts Testing Google Music Internally · · Score: 1

Might this project morph into a google books scenario? Where google actively scans in all the worlds music and gives everyone access (for money). I realize that the google books thing is on hold till they bribe enough politicians for an enabling law, but that's easy enough (politicians are easy though not cheap).

Sexual orientation is hardwired into the brain, sometimes the wires get crossed. Homosexuality is a birth defect not a choice. Also, I don't think the religious devout would consider the app hateful.

  9. Re:Security Council vs Chain of Command on UN Intervention Begins In Libya · · Score: 1

The UN only has legal jurisdiction in international matters, not internal affairs like a civil war. All power flows from the ability to deny others things they value, the UN has no such ability (nor the power that comes from it).

  10. Bigger question on UN Intervention Begins In Libya · · Score: 1

Ghadaffi was an american regional ally, so why are they openly opposing him? The other (american allied) despots can't enjoy watching the US betray their ally, i've no doubt that the house of Saud is quite upset over this betrayal, and Bahrain certainly will wonder if they are next. The american government doesn't do things because "It's the right thing" or because "we support democracy", they've shown again and again they only support short term self interest. So why are they intervening here? The only reason I can see is that European allies demanded help to prevent a massive refugee exodus into europe that would have destabilized the EU, leading to economic collapse that would cascade through the world's (and america) economy.

  11. Simple solution on UN Intervention Begins In Libya · · Score: 1

If the US doesn't want to be the world's police force, then LET someone else do it. The reason the US helped Iran during the Iran/Iraq war is because they wanted both countries to lose, and thereby prevent any country from becoming a major regional power capable of opposing the USA. And they've done the same in every other region of the world. The US has actively prevented any other country from taking on the role of world cop.

I think the income freeze has more to do with big business working hard to cut costs (labour) than with technology. There has definately been a global political shift to the right in the world during that time period, it's not just the USA that's becoming fascist. The massive offshoring of jobs to the third world has severely undermined rising wages in the first world. On the other hand: labour saving device == job killer.

  13. Ballots on Ask Slashdot: Setting Up Wireless Voting For Students? · · Score: 1

Have a locked metal box with a slot in the top, everyone takes a ballot from the vote register at the box, checks off their choice, and puts it in the box. At the end of voting you open the box and count the ballots. One of the hazards of working in the high tech industry is the tendency to overthink everything, to use more tech than is actually required instead of the simplest solution practical.

The case revolves around legal definitions. In laymans terms a computer sits on your desk and you type/mouse stuff into it or watch Utube. To those of us with technicial backgrounds everything containing a cpu/gpu/mpu is a computer, but trying to explain that to a non techie will be rather difficult. Just as explaining the difference between hacker and cracker, this just isn't an easy road to travel. I think given the silly ideas politicians have that we want to avoid the whole problem and let sysadmins lock down their routers without police intervention.

I suspect it WON'T be deleted, and I suspect those people won't have that option offered to them. Meaning that the entire country will (in one generation) be biometric scanned. Think of the children is such an easy way to conn people into giving up their freedom.

If you lose your contactless payment device: the thief can spend till your daily limit, or until the police track him down by the built in gps, or until you remotely disable the device. Also there is no reason your phone couldn't have a passcode required to spend money or to spend over a transaction/daily limit. Given the choice the lost contactless payment device might very well be the cheaper theft.

Wouldn't that make the pictures I took of you drunk with that girl be commercial then? It would certainly involve me "entertaining" the public for recompense. And this doesn't even get into multiple countries, with different laws.
