  1. helps to get paid from friends and family on Cash Pours in for Student with $1 Million Web Idea · · Score: 2, Interesting

Once again proving that it isn't how smart you are or how hard you work but who you know. It sounds like he got his start by knowing friends and family that could pour a little money into his idea and help get him started. THAT is what is needed more than a really clever idea.

Not saying that this kid isn't smart but just that this doesn't really prove anything. It's more luck and connections working in his favor. Charging per pixel is a reasonable idea but is it really so much better than any other pricing scheme?

If you're smart then worry less about school and your job and more about meeting people in other areas of influence - business, marketing, finance, etc. With those kinds of people your ideas will be able to take seed and make you and them money. A little work if your family doesn't come from money but still very possible.

I'm an addict! ;) Seriously I would like to own a legal copy of every movie ever made. I have a thing for books too. I used to buy hundreds of books a year and read about one per day. Now I buy maybe a book every week as I spend to much time working and need up-to-date info so I read online rather than buying tech books.

I watch a couple movies a day usually. I can watch movies while working so it's good. Usually I get new movies in a burst of 4 or 5 at once every few days.

It really makes me mad though when I can't backup or change around what is mine. I like removing menus, ads, etc from my movies. Why should they be able to stop me?

  3. No more discs - No more Microsoft on Fate of High-Def DVD up to Microsoft? · · Score: 0, Troll

I've already decided that I won't be buying any copy protected media (movies, music, etc) if I can't easily break that copy protection (such as with DVDs) and likewise that I won't be buying any software that requires I use DRM or any kind of 'trusted computing'. So I guess that means I'll be saving a fortune as I will no longer be buying thousands of movies or spending any money on Microsoft software. I buy 500 movies a year at an average of $10 each. Wow, I just saved $5000 a year. Not good for movie companies though.

If you are using the command-line then it should mean you have brains enough to remember a couple obvious command names. :)

As for Photoshop being more friendly a name than GIMP. It shouldn't matter because A) you could use the full name of GIMP if you wanted to which is much more obvious than the short form and B) system menus should not tell you the name of the programs in your menu unless you're in an advanced mode. In simple mode they should just tell you what task the program performs and offer only one choice to perform that task. 'Image Editor' should be easy enough for most people to understand.

  10. Re:Is web surfing the only application? on Does Faster Broadband Matter? · · Score: 1

I think a major reason that web browsing, IM, and email is what most people limit themselves to still is because of a lack of decent broadband. A good portion of users still use dial-up which limits their entire network of friends, family, and coworkers as to applications for interaction. Most so called broadband in the US is slow as hell which again limits our choices. With LAN-speed broadband so much more would be possible. Immersive multi-player VR enviroments, server-side applications of a quality we'd expect from an app stored on our drive or better, the ability to download a large file without being disconnected and needing to restart several times during the process. I for one am sick of slow Internet access. My broadband severly limits me in downloading and far more in uploading. Have you actually tried streaming a quality video broadcast over a DSL connection? You're sure as hell going to be unlikely to do it in the US.

    "Where from?"
    "I can't tell you."
    "What?"
"They have spies everywhere. Keep an eye out for guys in clown suits."

It really wouldn't work. So unless you're selling their product or had signed some sort of agreement I don't think they could do much about non-commercial use of their trademark. Hell if anyone wants to publish the list and they're being shit heads about letting you then don't get rid of it. Just publish it anonymously. If you need server space just ask in a public forum such as this one. I'd let you put it on my servers and I'm sure others would too. Safari is the only competition that Firefox has so far. Opera is better than IE but still renders CSS poorly. So yeh, M$ switching to an Opera-based IE would be better but Opera would be stupid to go for it.. you do remember the great deal that led to IE in the first place don't you? Somebody got a really raw deal from that.

IE should be switched to either a Gecko or KHTML based engine. Both are free to use with good standards compliancy. Why pay for Opera when better choices are available at no cost. Why roll your own when you could switch to a better engine for free. It seems M$ is going to probably have more pressure on them with OS X being moved to x86 - combined with pressure from Firefox - so they need a browser that can compete with Safari and Firefox. If a consumer can buy the same computer with Mac OS or Windows and they can see demo machines before their purchase is it likely that Apple won't be smart enough to create some demos showing off why Safari is so much better than IE? They'd be crazy not to make deals with major websites (Amazon, Google, Yahoo, etc) to get them to add functionality that won't work with IE. Some little gee whiz stuff like that could really sell the Mac especially once it's easier to compare the hardware specs.

My biggest plus for Gmail is that it allows POP access. My biggest down for it is that it doesn't REALLY delete mail accessed by POP so every day or two (with my mail volume) I have to manually do it.

I like the UI overall although I can certainly see things that could be improved and the search functionality, while better than most mail programs, is really lacking some things I'd expect. But then it's still new. I'd rather they take time to consider features and not just through them in randomly.

I only hope the movie is as good a quality as the books and are of LotR quality adaption and not a HP quality adaption (the last two movies have really fallen short). Keep the movie as short as you can without cutting down the story. Everything you need and nothing you don't. EG was always deeply about the characters and what is going on inside and between them. That aspect must be maintained. We need to feel the need and the pain of all the characters.
