I got my Hollywood+ almost 3 years ago, and it's worked flawlessly ever since. It's worked well enough for me to not feel a need to replace it with a standalone DVD player. I've never seen a blue screen in either win98 or XP. As for the software, it's not the best interface, but I've never had it act flakey. Perhaps their drivers/software are sensitve to certain configurations.
What about all the good police officers you don't hear about? Saying all cops are bad based on the quebec riots or any other single incident is just as stupid as saying that all the protestors in Quebec were violent protestors that were destroying private property.
First, it's certain companies that happen to reside in the state of Texas, not the actual state. Atleast one of these companies has already been required by the FTC to give a rebate to Californa energy purchasers.
Secondly, what exactly do you expect him to do about energy? The environmentalists want increased energy efficiency. Sounds good, but it will take 10+ years before real results occur.
Then there is the faction on the left that wants price ceilings. The problem is that price ceilings will actually increase demand while they lower supply. If you don't believe me take an economics class.
We live in a market based economy, so there are two ways to fix the energy "crisis". You can either increase supply, decrease demand, or both. Demand will always increase faster than we can conserve it unless some technological breakthrough drastically changes energy use. The answer is to increase the supply of energy, while trying to slow the increase in demand.
How is this different than ordering memeory from crucial.com? They have a disclaimer on their site that basically says RAM is a volatile market so prices will change frequently. You won't get a refund if you order today and the price drops $10 tomorrow.
You act like I can't find some close-minded community anywhere in the country. I guarantee if I look I can find quite a few in any state. When I lived in CA I found quite a few places that were farther to the right than anything I've ever seen in Texas.
BTW It will be wasting your time to not vote straight Republican in Texas when the entire legislature is Republican controlled. Don't forget that Texas was almost exclusively a Democrat state not that long ago. I will admit they probably weren't as liberal as the Democrats to the north, but they were more liberal than the Republicans.
In Texas the voter turnout was less than 50%, so figure half of these people you think hate you could care less what your political views are. Of the other half maybe 60% voted republican in 2000. Which means 70% of the population either agrees with you or is agnostic to your views.
Also most Texans respect someone who can give a reasonable argument for their beliefs. They may not agree with you, but they will listen. They way you talk you seem as close-minded as the people you are complaining about
But with a car stereo the controls aren't really important. The controls interface with the stereo itself. All an aftermarket stereo needs is a way to connect to a power supply, a ground, and speakers. The original stereo needs the exact same things, so I can just snip a few wires, add some connectors and plug it into my new stereo. Yes it will leave all those scattered controls useless, but I can put any stereo I want in pretty easily. This stereo will have it's own interface. At worst I have to run the wiring myself. You might do that anyways (particularly to the speakers)
Since when is it your right to take someone else's source code, modify it, and do whatever you want with it? This is a privilege that is granted to you by the author of the code. You have no inherent right to do whatever you want with the code. As a matter of fact the GPL allows you to do whatever you want with the code until you distribute it.
Why shouldn't an artist be able to sign all rights to their works over to another party? I'm not sure I understand what part of the constitution says the government can make a law that prevents me from signing all rights to my work to anyone else I choose.
I agree for most artists it probably makes sense to sign with a label, but they aren't forced to.
The original poster said we should not allow artists to sign with a label at all. This is what I disagreed with. Nobody forces an artist to sign a contract. They sign contracts because they think they will help their careers. To say that an artist can't sign a contract is absurd. Why should the government have the right to tell me who I can sign agreements with?
Why should we take away the artist's right to sign over the rights to his works? It's not like a creator is forced to sign a record deal. The means exist for self distribution already.
Napster is a company who only makes one product. That product is to facilitate the exchange of mostly copyrighted music. Therefore they make money by making it easier for users to abuse other's copyright
Sony is a company that is also illegally abusing a copyright in order to make money.
To spell it out the contradiction on slashdot is that both companies are abusing copyrights, yet typical slashdot groupthink defends one and villifies the other.
Either you believe in protecting copyrights or you don't. Maybe people need to figure out where they stand.
They may get defamed 50 million times, but you have to love the irony that this company who starts filing law suits when ther intellectual property is threatened (Napster, DECSS) Is now violating someone else's intellectual property. On the other hand it is amusing to see slashdot, who defends napster, getting all upset over someone violating the copyright of some GPL code. BR
That's trademark law, not copyright law. If what you say is true, most commercial software would have lost it's copyright because it's copyright is rarely defended.
I get the feeling we are actually trying to get to the similar points and I just sort of missed it when I read your comment. I was really just trying to extend the your phone analogy to the situation at hand. I absolutely agree that we have no real expectation that our actions on the internet (or most other times we involve other people) are totally private.
You have an excellent point. What if we could come up with a way for people to anonymously claim a certain part of the tablature space. So I could log on and claim A through AC and nobody would duplicate my effort. I'm not really sure what the possibilities are with something like that.
Sorry for the belated reply.
How is an ISP, hosting provider, or site any different? Most people on Slashdot are aware that these entities track who connects to them and when. Most track more information than that. Now if you can give me a way to connect to a website with nobody but me knowing I did using current technology then I can accept your argument.
Now there is an argument that indymedia shouldn't have to turn over the information, but the information could still be collected, though it would take much longer.

Not only does emusic sell $0.99 singles, for $10/month you can get unlimited downloads from their site.
No we don't. As of sometime last year you can't have any open alcoholic beverage containers in your car.
If front wheel drive is so great, why are most of the cars at Lemans going to be rear wheel drive?
Oreilly has an excellent book on setting up Samba. If you follow it's instructions you will have no problem getting Samba running smoothly.

At the collegiate level dynamic pricing is a regular practice in football and basketball. I've seen the price go up 50% ($30 to $45) for big games.

The GPL isn't applicable unless you actually distribute your changes.

Yeah, I guess that's why he also came out ahead in every official or unofficial recount since election day.

Sourceforge in freenet would be a good thing.

Freenet is an excellent idea. Maybe some sort of organized effort could be put together to work on putting the tabs into freenet.
