  1. Business experts needed, not tech experts. on Tech Experts Look To Help Save the Postal Service · · Score: 1

The solution is to close the brick-and-mortar post offices -- which the government has no clue how to run effectively -- and offer cheap franchising packages. We'll see new "Mailbox Etc." outlets open on every corner. Then the USPS can focus on what they do brilliantly -- door to door delivery.

Calling it GPS implies they are using external signals to locate. The article says the chimps are creating and using internal distance transform maps.

  4. two nitpicks with the review on Anathem · · Score: 1

I find much of this review to be spot-on but for two big points:

religious orders have provided a certain amount of continuity, and have pursued theoretical scientific research

My own impression is that religious orders have pretty much receded to the fringe, but theoretical science morphed into a religion-like institution.

My other nitpick with the review is the criticism of the use of made-up words. Considering that the book is about parallel universes, and Arbre is an ever-so-slightly-alternate version of Earth, then it supports the story that there would be alternate words for everyday things.

  5. Two things: on What To Do With All of My Gadget Chargers? · · Score: 1

First, label both ends (the plug and the connector) clearly. Second, get an over-the-door shoe organizer from iKea or some place. This same technique works for all the extra cables (usb, etc.) that come with each gadget, and in many cases the gadget itself can be stored and organized this way. 6. Roosevelt Island Garbage Tunnels on Underground Freight Networks · · Score: 2, Interesting

"In the apartment buildings on Roosevelt Island, residents drop their trash down chutes, and it gets sucked at nearly 60 miles per hour through 20-inch underground pipes that run more than a half-mile up the island. After arriving at the ground floor of a gray three-story building at the north end of the island, the trash is compacted to about one-twentieth of its original size, sealed in a container and trucked to landfills outside the state." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/19/nyregion/19trash.html
