  1. Like Titanic? on LOTR: The Two Towers · · Score: 1

The movie is twice as long as most movies, therefore theaters can squeeze fewer showings into one day.

Which is why many theaters charged about 15% more for a ticket to Titanic (3+1/4 hr) than they charged for tickets to other movies showing at the same time. It balances out.

  2. Patents on Intel Compiler Compared To gcc · · Score: 0, Troll

Unfortunately, many of the optimization methods used by CPU vendors' compilers are patented with no available royalty-free license, precluding use of the methods in free software.

  3. SPECint vs. SPECfp on Intel Compiler Compared To gcc · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why did SPEC dudes bother splitting between SPECint and SPECfp after all?

Because encryption and other heavy number theory doesn't use floating-point.

Because analog modeling of physical systems such as circuits doesn't use integers except as loop counters and pointers.

Because floating-point hardware draws a lot of power, forcing makers of handheld devices to omit the FPU.

The contents of the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act had nothing to do with Rep. Bono's cause of death. If you want safety tips for alpine skiing, look here.

Yes, I got the joke, but I didn't find it funny.

Why Walt Disney World and not Time Warner World?

And yes, EA does have a theme park and a theme park. Who knows? Perhaps EA is planning a real (not Sim) theme park.

  7. If Bono Act hits tree like politician did... on EA As The Next Disney · · Score: 4, Insightful

Even if Disney's Treasure Planet does rake in some dough late into its theatrical release, or if it sells exceptionally well on DVD and VHS, DisneyCo is in danger of losing two of its cash cows: the copyright on Mickey Mouse (© 1928 Disney) and the USA copyright on Winnie the Pooh (© 1925 Milne, licensed exclusively to Disney).

While you're waiting for the Supreme Court to decide on whether or not to free the mouse, you can civil disobey right now.

Or Disney's Pinocchio 2.0: Let's See How Bad We Can Screw Up The Plot And/Or Theme Of The Story This Time.

(Interesting tidbit: In the ending of The Adventures of Pinocchio, a novel by Carlo Collodi, it isn't 100% clear that the whole story isn't all a dream, just like that season of TV's "Dallas".)

As far as I know, American McGee's Alice is the closest that EA has come to playing around with classic tales.

  9. Lobbying? on EA As The Next Disney · · Score: 3, Interesting

Electronic Arts won't be the next DisneyCo until EA starts lobbying to the United States Congress for copyright laws that further restrict consumers and other authors and publishers. Look how much money DisneyCo contributed to get the Bono Act passed in a desperate attempt to keep Mickey Mouse locked up.

  10. You're probably thinking Xbox on Controllers for Kids? · · Score: 1

GC controllers are HID compliant, and you just buy an adapter for GC -> USB.

A Google search turned up nothing. Actually, it's the Xbox controllers that communicate through USB, and it's a matter of simple wiring to make an adapter, but because they're not HID they need a widely-available driver.

  11. TTL = half the time until switchover on Minimizing Downtime When Switching IP Addresses? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Decrease the TTL of the DNS records during the switchover. If your current TTL is a day, then at least one day earlier, change it to, say, 300 (5 minutes). You'll experience a higher DNS query rate during that time, but probably nothing you can't handle.

Actually, you can reduce the DNS query rate by continuously setting the TTL to about half the time until the switchover. For instance, 24 hours before the switchover, set it to 12 hours. Then keep decreasing the TTL until it's down to about five minutes. This way, you won't get a continuous flood of DNS requests during the day before the switchover.

That's what I do. I give 65 USD every year to the EFF, and I don't spend any more than that on major-label music or movies.

Because they're using bandwidth leased by the company.

Because they're using electricity leased by the company.

You may be right about the Atari products, but AFAIK, the NEC PC Engine (Japanese TG16) was at least as popular in Japan as the Super Famicom (Japanese SNES). The Sega Mega Drive (Japanese Genesis) came in at a distant third in Japan.

but GCC, that is a compiled language and the act of a simple compile while being easy, can be confuing after wards, not to mention haveing to learn all the options and how to link multiple files, how to create a make file, etc.

When I was first starting out on GCC, I used RHIDE. Only later did I learn makefiles. If it was easy enough for me when I was in high school... But then, I was doing Applesoft BASIC + 6502 assembly language when I was in middle school.

frankly, I think python is the new basic
