  14. Re:Acceptance of QT. on Death of CDE & Motif? · · Score: 1

In the past lots of people have flamed QT and the KDE team because QT is not open.

It may not be GPL'd but QT2 is a very open system.

QT is also /very/ easy to code, and it looks great along side M$ style apps.

This along with the rapid, but directed, effort behind KDE make it my favorite for a short term winner (look at the sig)

But we have to continue to develop. New users are coming over to more open (or just diferent) OS's and most of them are end users. QT's looks will be a large part of the quation for them. They (and the money men behind them) want an easy path from Windows to *nix systems. They don't want to spend loads of money retraining end users, it's bad enough admins need training, they want to see almost imediate returns for the change over.

Open source coders have got to stop developing software aimed at other open source coders, I am guilty of this as much as the next man, and start developing user level programs.

KDE is making this very easy. kdevelop makes developing an application that looks M$ officey a simple affair, even the kdevelop ide borrows heavily from M$ VC. Many /.ers will see this as an invasion, but without new blood, and new money, we are just a bunch of self satisfing geeks (not a bad thing, but not a revolution!).

Lets not just change the world, lets keep the changes coming.

This really pissed me off and I wrote the software fully compliant but left it commented out so it could be fixed later on by the poor sod given the job of untangaling my code. I left the company shortly afterwards. So if you are English and are panicing about your water just hope all the bullied coders did what I did back then.
