Seriously, where do people come up with this crap.
- New OS's always eat up more resources than their predecessors. You want more eye candy? Resources. You want more DirectX stuff? Resources. The list goes on forever.
- Vista is not slower. Please give a single shred of evidence for this. In most areas, it's quite a bit faster. Note that, while it should be obviously, it must be pointed out that you need the hardware to support it.
- Vista is more stable. Again, provide some evidence if you'd like to state otherwise. Evidence != horror stories you've heard down the grape vine.
- The UAC prompts are a pain in the ass, true. Apple has managed to scare the entire market with it. It's approximately 5 clicks away from turning it off, however.
I can in no way justify a father killing his family over _anything_. However, as already stated the prospect of long term prison time is extremely damaging to anyone's psych.
I love how everyone is quick to jump on the guy as "he's a criminal & deserves it!", etc. The guy was a spammer... he sent you know, electronic emails. This has disrupted your life's so much that you feel a) someone deserves to be locked up away from society and even b) death? It is you who is sick. I wouldn't doubt in any way that word of what people like you all think about the guy at least highly contributed to his suicide.
I'd like to jump on the wagon and state that yes, that IS the point as I see it. If you want a distro that's "pure", go for it. If you want something else, go for it. Everyone's happy.
I absolutely love OSS, but close source isn't the devil as some would like us to believe. If someone wants to contribute, give me something free that does the job but keep it closed source.. fine.
I wish people would stop wasting some much time with stuff like this and spend more time working towards the "it just works" goal.
Linux games suck. Yes, we know there is a port of [fill in years old game title here] on Linux. Yes we know we can play Tuxracer or whatever the hell it is. No, we don't want to play them. Linux needs new titles if you want gamers. That is, when a new title is released on Windows/PS3/XBox 360, we need it on Linux as well. Till then, ---->
OpenGL != DirectX. DirectX > OpenGL. DirectX brings a lot to the table besides just graphics -- and what it does there is much better than OpenGL. I know, a lot of you want to argue this, but "sorry". Linux needs it's DirectX. With that said, OpenGL and other similar projects are a good start, but it's not there yet. For it to work, there needs to be a full package like DX provides: Easy to use and understand _up to date_ libraries, SDK(s), graphics/sound/networking/etc. APIs. The whole thing.
Partially #2, we all know "Linux is about choice". Hell that's great, but there needs to be a choice we can make that works in Home Gaming Desktop arena. Standard windowing system APIs, standard "DirectX" type package,.... the list goes on. Right now there are standardS (see the "S" there) for each of them. That doesn't work.
Someday Linux will get there. It'll be a great day.
