Somethings not right, in my country there practically no limited plans (except on mobile), basically every provider gives as much as you can download, most often at speeds of 10Mbit to100Mbit. Well and people do download:D since my country isn't too wealthy "piracy" is quite rampant, and no wonder, when buying games locally ends up more expensive than buying in amazon.de/uk and sending them back all the way to Lithuania. So anyway my point is that providers in my country do give unlimited connection (or am i missing something and this is about unlimited speed, but i somehow doubt that:) ), and its been like this for like five years, and i bet at least some people do download >TB a month. The thing that amazes me most is, my puny country is done with caps for like 5 years, but such country like usa has plans with 20GB/month caps (or am i wrong? but iirc i read someone metion something like this here)...
Hm yeah quite an interesting problem. You stand by the side of tv and you side of scene (if your watching concert). Well maybe you could do something as nonlinear video angle change. Like when you are moving closer and closer to the edge angle change on video/picture gets smaller and smaller. So this way you could still see stuff from different angles adn get impressive viewing angle change while sidestepping at center of screen, but still not see sides of scenes/studios/whatever when sitting at the side of screen/tv.
And yeah multiview + head tracking is probably hardly possible, but sill some day id really like to try some game with some glasses (probably anaglyph because its way way cheaper) and some head tracking, should be very impressive:)
Yesterday i was checking anaglyph rendering capability of game i'm playing and then it hit me. Nether anaglyph nor interlaced glasses and probably not even VR glasses are full true 3d. Here is why: glasses give you perception of depth that is very cool effect and all, but one thing is missing: you move your head you see different stuff. Now head tracking gives joust that and it is also very cool in itself. Now what i would really like to try is some glasses 3d (preferably non anaglyph, cause anaglyph is hard on eyes) + head tracking 3d (probably can be done much easier tracking glasses) to get real true 3d experience:) Well this rant is just to point out that there seems to be no real/true 3d yet unless you clobber something like this yourself using graphics card anaglyph render and some hacked up head tracking. Well one more point that such true 3d would be quite difficult to do for non interactive/non rendered graphics i.e. movies. But some day maybe:)
Yeah i admit that i haven't used used mac os x much, well it should add up to like 3-5hrs overall. I know thats not much, but enough to feel the distinctive feature of mac os x: one menu for all windows. It's not bad thing, saves vertical screen space. But i don't like it because there is totaly no way this could be used with focus follows mouse, witch i consider more useful feature. Now even more personal thing, after like 2 years of using focus follows mouse, i decided to disable "click rasess" (that means that window can only be rased by clicking on border/titlebar or in a task bar) at first it seemed a little "WTF" (i had the same perception with focus follows mouse for first couple days when i tried it) but then i have seen how useful this is, especially if you have to copy/paste a lot.
Of course i understand that such thing like focus follows mouse are for more advanced users only, computer newbies are confused even without this, and if they would have to always look where the mouse is i think it would be much harder for them (although skill gained by this should be useful later on i guess).
Id say we can split all users in 3 categories: newbies or low users, who use one app at a time, for them there is totally no difference in usability be it Windows, Mac OS X, or one of *nix/Linux WM styles, they have one window and are happy with it; Second group would be someone who use few apps at a time, i'd say 2-5, then the best thing for them i thin should be multiple desktops, switching between desktops using hotkeys is WAY faster and more intuitive then hunting for windows on task-bar or dock; And then heawy users, like me sometimes, i always have 8 desktops, and sometimes several apps/windows per desktop. Then focus follows mouse and tabbed windows should be better than mac style menus.
One type of apps that would GREATLY benefit from tabbed windows are instant messengers/skype. Such app have main window, and then window per chat. If your talking with several people, then task-bar and alt-tab becomes very cumbersome to use, but using tabbed windows you can manage skype/im apps windows very nicely and neatly. Same goes for browser. if you have a lot of tabs you might one to have another window, and it you can tab windows it's very nice hierarchy, same for terminals, text editor when programming etc.
Ok let me say this, i have been using fluxbox for a long time, and it has this feature, some time ago i switched to kde for more "modern" feel, but i have always missed window tabbing. People that say it shit, let me tell you this you have no clue how great this is.
Let me say this, there are people that are all gimp , blender UI sucks (hold on i know this seems out of the blue), and mac this mac that, or best *Windows* users who have not seen *Window* manager. And all these people have no idea how life changing such thing as tabbed windows can be, and also focus follows mouse.
Now probably here pops a lot of people that goes something like this: "oh i tried this and it suck" or something like that. Well then i bet you haven't tried it enough. Cause if you get used to focus follows mouse, click to focus becomes super retarded. And id Say even more with window tabbing. Of course you should have multiple desktops to fully utilize this feature. And there is a lot of people who don even understand how good that is.
My point is there are a lot of people that bitch about fsf/oss software interfaces, while most of them are stuck with stone age interfaces, and don't know better. Or people think hard to learn = hard to use (never mind that hard to learn most of the time means, i'm very lazy to learn something new, so I'll just say interface i don't know sucks).
I know the part about you haven't tried enough seems harsh or something like that, but its just that i know how easily/quickly people give up.
Ok maybe I'm not very knowledgeable about asteroids, but i heard some of them have shitload of rare resources like gold ore even uranium and other neat stuff. So why no one talks about starting asteroid mining? i know it probably is insanely hard thing, but it would really give something. If you could bring down chunks of gold from some asteroid i think you could cover cost pretty easy, or uranium or other rare resource. Also such missions would/should lead to nice advances in science, maybe even in space construction from asteroids themselves.
Lumines IS awesome game. And there are some nice games for psp. But anyway i just wanted to say that imho lumines is very good and unique game. I guess you just didin't give enough time, or it just doesn't suit you. It's nowhere near crap.
Well using package yes. But there is almost always a possibility for./configure --prefix= and place stuff where you want. Any amount of versions just in different places. For example i have 3 versions of wine installed:) Really useful.
What would prevent application from app level to do malicious stuff? I'm just guessing that nothing.
People speak about responsiveness and that Linux is less responsive than windows, or at least thats how i understand posts above. But somehow i always see opposite, i run Linux for like 3 years and haven't seen almost any irresponsiveness except of course than i know that app need huge amount of power i.e. ray tracing and such. And windows... whenever im forced to work with them even if for only one hour ill get some irresponsive seconds. (btw i use fluxbox, i guess this may be adding a bit to responsiveness but shouldn't be much, and i'm using it not for speed but for Real window management : )
Fallout (2)! Could be much better (i sure hope fallout 3 wont screw things up), but its awesome game, where your action influence what you can do next. It's all designed but still not bad. And i don;t think we need some true AI for good stories, just some advanced procedural generation techniques and maybe some little additional stuff.
All the people wanting MDI probably have one common trait, they don't know or even imagine what window management looks like, because they come from os thats ironically called windows... And i don't know about how others think but I'd say nor gnome nor kde does descent window management, of course its orders of magnitude better than windows but still. From windows managers i have seen and tried (quite many) id say fluxbox is best, it misses a feature or two I'd want but its so damn good at window management that i use it even on my new reasonably powerful machine. Of course i understand that it is not for everyones taste.
More thing i don't understand: icons on desktop. Whats up with that? I see no real good use of them or improvement in usability. Compared to fluxbox type menu.
First thing pvp must have consequences, big ones. I like the concept of permadeath, it gives you more excitement and emotions. Now i hear all of you who say i'll not play a game where i will be killed by some kid who has all day to play and level up. And thats the second grates problem of RPG of today.
WT* is p with leveling and skilling? I don't know who invented this but IMHO mostly it sucks big time(at least for multiplayer for sure). Game becomes unbelievably hard to balance, you'll always get: more time on game - stronger. And that gives big and i'd say unfair advantage for teens who have lots of time. And because of what teens are like they effectively ruin the game for everyone else. And thats not good. Other thing the skilling leveling system doesn't reflect reality(it reflects movies or anime) (for those who say it doesn't have to IMHO better dont play PRG at all then) in life then you train some skill/"stat" and later on you don't use it, it worsens. Or if you were training for weight lifting and later started to to put all your time in studying you'll not lift same weight after a year of studying. (yea i know not very precise formulation but i hope you get the point) I think that by making leveles, classless RPG witch has skills that decrease over time, and also has permadeath it would be possible to make really interesting MMORPG (PvP vise).
Talks about gameplay and story and no one mentions fallout? I played and completed fallout 2 and its the best RPG. I hate how now all RPG's are about stat maximization and such. IMHO RPG's should be about chose (thats why i don't like Final fantasy or other Japanese RPG's). In fallout 2 sotry is convincing enough and provides you with enough choices, like meaningful to how you will continue after choosing something. I really miss that in todays games.
One more thing that is hugely forgotten and regarded as burden to players is concept of permadeath. It might seem harsh at first but imho it makes game much more interesting after you get used to it. Then even without much additions you feel that your choice matter, then you think that if i do that my char with whom i have been for like month is more it will give you more feelings and emotions.
Doubt this stuff, i watched documentary on martial monks and it says they are vegans(seems believable since they are Buddhists) and should i say they don't seem weak, pale, not energetic or that there bones don't get lots of blows and strikes. Of course they train all day (contrary to "modern" people), but still they are vegans and seem to be in a Very good health.
First can someone explain me why they don't like the name? Whats so bad about it?(Maybe because im not native English speaker i don't "sense" something?) And you can always use the long name...
Then some people say it's UI is bad uncomfortable etc etc. But i would say gimp's ui is really really not bad. And i have a good guess why other don't like it: it has many windows. So you go why the f* you need so many windows? to place everything the way i want, i can even detach menus(photoshop can't do this for sure) and this is great feature (i know its from gtk actually). Now to those who say it has too many windows, may i ask: do you know what window manager is? I totally agree working with gimp in windows can be annoying, but thats the case with almost all apps on windows(then you get a bit more windows in your desktop). organizing windows in windows is almost impossible (kinda funny isn't it). But if you have wm with virtual desktops and give one for gimp it becomes really comfortable to use. (many apps also) Also some wm have such unheard features like window grouping and shading and other nice features, witch add usability to many apps.
Sorry to wander from gimp to wm's but i just think that some people blame not the things tha should be blamed.
PS i also think blenders ui is amazing too, very configurable, ant thats not a bed thing, almost always.
I think the problem with almost all games of these days is how they try to achieve (to be fun and interesting): They become easy, without consequences to your actions.
Most of the mmorpg's your power is very strong correlated with time you spend online. Not a nice feature imho. And the biggest problem of all games(imo, very unpopular opinion i think) almost no way to fail. I mean wt* with redoing quest as many times as you want till you succeed. I know people want to win and and not to lose, and games don't have to be realistic and such. But all this "pushing" to success seems to lessen the fun, at least for me. Ad thats the thing that allows powergaming and griefers. As someone stated you cant punish them.
I'll say i like fallout 2(haven't played fallout 1) because you CAN fail quest, you can so totally fail that games goal becomes almost unreachable. Whats fun in that? You take your actions more seriously. And then you succeed in doing something it gives you grater emotional reward. And i also like rogue-likes (ADOM mostly) because of permadeath (you can fail quests there too). Then there is some hard stuff you appreciate what you reach more. Yes it was annoying first times i tried playing. But some time later i learned to live with that and it's one of the greatest games i know.
Whats this my talk all about? You cant make everyone happy all the time. And for me it seems that games are trying to do just that, and thats impossible(in multi player competitive gaming that is). And what is this leveling stuff everyone is so obsessed? imho games should concentrate more on skills thant some levels, these depend basically solely on how much time you spend on game, and gives kids who have lots of time a very good chance to become bullies. Especially that they cannot lose anything. If there is permadeath you will very carefully consider befor bulling/attacking someone because than it comes back you have a very good chance to not be able to deal with it, and lose what you have.
After all i think one of games purposes is to teach something. And we learn mostly from mistakes don't we? Kinda hard to do that than your not allowed to do them...

I'd recommend XTA :) Although ba is most popular, but for me its a bit too fast and too spamy :)

Columns has no depth compared to lumines thats it.
And you acting so high about your english skill just shows your ignorance that not everyone here is native english speaker.
Lumines could be compared to tetris attack however, but thats only one action-puzzle game i know that compares to lumines.

I guess it just seems so because human eyes are most sensitive to green.
PC *IS* Linux machine...
You should say get PC with ether Windows or Linux, but not that way and not here.
Elinks on the other hand...
Until data becomes not the first thing we need from space. Or until data allows us to get something very useful from there.
