  1. Easy Solution on Encryption Key Retrieval Method Invented · · Score: 1

Use checks or money orders. I personally do not own a credit card, because I think the interest on it is ridiculous and they are so easily prone to attack. This is just evidence that you are probably no safer giving out your credit card info over the internet than you are safe from getting mugged in a large city.

  2. Caution: Controversial Viewpoint on Gender in the Internet Age · · Score: 1

I'm going to take a stab at a biological (not social) reason why there aren't as many female geeks as males, just because we've beaten everything else to death about this subject in recent years and I'm bored.

According to studies I've read (I can't cite them offhand, so take this as unjustified if you like), the male brain organizes and locates objects just like a map. Reason being that evolution favored male hunters who could travel larger distances and still find his way back home. Females, however, do not organize information like a map, but more along the lines of landmarks and mental pictures. The implications of the study was demonstrated by testing both male and female engineers to draw, in detail, everyday objects such as bicycles. Males were clearly superior at this activity, supporting the studies' assertion.

But what does this have to do with the Internet and Computers? I think it is possible there are more male than female geeks because males may simply be better at it. The ability of the male brain to sort out and visualize information like a map may prove as a strength when engaging in activies such as finding information on the Internet, programming, and system administration.

Ok its far fetched, but I thought it would be interesting to offer it up anyways.

Yeah politicians are for the most part clueless. but let me explain why they may be forced to "get it."

The center of the technological world is, of course, Silicon Valley. But unfortunately for politicians, Silicon Valley is located in California - one of, if not the most influential state regarding presidential elections. Myself being an optimist, am hoping this won't always mean s/he with the largest amount of money can buy the most air time, but will have to contend more and more with technology related issues.

  5. The lesser evil on Candidates on Net Issues · · Score: 1

Forbes, above all the other candidates, looks like he has a clue. Though I don't think he has a chance at winning, he is the only one actually presenting some interesting ideas. Skimming his site here: http://www.forbes2000.com, these are his main points concerning technology:

    1) Steve has pressed Washington to ban taxes on Internet commerce; repeal the "Gore Tax" on long-distance phone service

This is not too insightful, Gore is so stupid it makes me laugh.

    2) Pass tort reform laws to stop trial lawyers trying to destroy the technology industry

Uh oh, Microsoft and RIAA, among others, won't like this one bit

    3) Eliminate capital gains taxes to create more high-tech small businesses and generate more high-paying American jobs

    Stick it to The Man!

Ok I know I shouldn't trust politicians, no one here does, but I consider Forbes to be a "cleaner" candidate because he does have his own money, and is not afraid to take a position, rather than just saying "let the market work itself out."

  6. Some Clinton Insight on ROTC-Like Program for Nerds · · Score: 2

Back when President Clinton was campaigning for his second term in office, he spent a lot of time "trying to reach" young people. When asked during an interview how appealing to adolescents and teens will help him win an election, he said "Because I don't want this to be the first generation in American history to do worse than their parents."

I think this fund is motivated by his views on youth in America - wanting to encourage the next generation to get involved in a very lucrative field, and not some conspiracy theory. Just my 2 cents.

This "Bridge" technology that will allow linux clients to run Windows applications is just an extension of what Corel started. I wouldn't think it would be too expensive, given Corel's share in this company and their vested interest in seeing Linux take off.

It's the law makers. Honestly, I have more respect for lawyers than I do for politicians. It seems the problem in America is that many of the politicians are too old to even gain a firm understanding of computers and technology, and rather than learn, hastily pass laws out of fear. Just look at America's policy on cryptography. It defies common sense, but the policy is set under this irrational fear that the government will lose control if it doesn't regulate the crap out of it.

I visited PRISMA Engineering's website, the company who designed the phone, and this is what they had to say about the Touchphone:

One of the most interesting Linux based project developed at Prisma Engineering is the Touchphone , which is an intelligent phone, fax and email capable, integrated with and answer machine, with a touchscreen and LCD based user interface. The telephone is based on a simple and inexpensive hardware.

They go on to briefly explain what they did with Linux, etc. Though it seems they have beefed up the hardware of the phone, it is doubtful they would've made a complete 180 in such a short period of time. The mention of Windows CE in the press reviews and on the Touchphones own website is probably just disinformation.
