Those two words makes it tough for some business' to move from ie6. In healthcare, everything has to be tested, and FDA approved. ie7 didn't last long, so hoping they start dev now for 8 and move to that (or ff or whatever browser). Even in a greatly structured organization. Just because we have to do something "right now" doesn't mean we can do it "right now." though I agree there should be more done to move in this direction faster, some entities are large beyond comprehension. Healthcare is one of them.
Because one client consistently uses P2P against my recommendations. I keep getting paid though, so I can't complain. They refer me to everyone so it's not too bad a deal. If a different client had issues though, & is running P2P to steal shit I think I'll bring that up!
but I recently worked on a comcast connected XP system w/o a firewall. It took 1 malware to disable win updates, which consequently caused more and more crap to come in.
However, on a vista 64 machine, I saw no problems whatsoever. It patched itself in a timely manner, and was good.
I don't know whether it was luck, or what, but that was just an observation of a recent situation.
I said do you know what country your money just went to?
They were like "uh... USA, China, Japan"
The answer? RUSSIA.
They went "oh shit"
I had to have them change their account, and buy credit protection. God only knows what they have tried to do w/ their card #. AV2k9 is a horrible (but easy to remove) piece of junk!
That's like saying an engine is reliable, so the user shouldn't change their oil?
No way. I get what your saying, but marketing for anyproduct is like that. A "mach 5 fusion power gamer" http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/3/2/ (It's real) razor won't cut you right? wrong. A diamond is worth the jewlery stores sticker price right? wrong.
Most anyone knows that product advertising is sketchy at best, lies most of the time, and outright deception otherwise.
That's why only hot guys with women crawling all over them drink beer right? Now that there is 25 blades on the razor, one stroke is enough? A cold soldering iron works as advertised? Spektrum TX/RX never lose signal right? Sync understands every word you speek? GPS never leads you down a dead end street? Geico is the cheapest insurance along w/ progressive, allstate, farmers, and everyone else who claims to be the best? You'll retire comfortably in any market with charles schwab?
Sorry but I don't buy it. Yeah some of those products may be best in their class, but they all lead you to believe that the product is something more than what it really is.
But you don't actually DO anything when you fix a computer. I mean, at least a mechanic takes parts out and puts them back in. You just click on things. That isn't real work!
I just say Sure, take it wherever you want, when it's not done right, come back to me but the price may go up.
Client/friend/family: "Yeah I got some virus on my machine, it's running slow" Me: "I'm booked through the end of the month" Lying through my teeth. Client: "We really need this, how soon can you get here" Me: "It'll be $100 for 1st hr, 75 for each after, I can be there tomorrow, but I have to bump Joshua smith..." Client: "Oh thank you so much, you're the best" Me: "Anything for you..."
Granted for family the numbers drop or change to work exchanges. But I was put in the same spot.
In fact I had one client whom I actually told I wouldn't fix there computers security issues, or work on an old machine, and they said they would pay me "what ever it took" That was the slowest $250 afternoon I ever worked. 8')
Did I take advantage of them? NO, I warned them, then when it happend they wanted my time, and I didn't want to give it away for anything less than a certain price. If you really are good at what you do, don't sell yourself short!
It's your responsibillity to pull the ebrake, reduce the gearing, come to a controlled stop at all speeds. Even if the manufactuer is responsible, it's kinda your fault for not being able to maintain control of YOUR vehicle. The owner of that pole is coming to you first, which if you are insured will be defered to your insurance carrier who will then determine if they eat it cause it's your fault, or go after the manufacturer. I'm a huge car guy, and maybe I expect too much from people. There is a reason when my car was stock that my brakes and suspension where the first parts to get upgraded though.
Also what happens if in your example it's because of poor maintenance? Which is more akin to the computer world. AV not running, no firewall, updates not installed due to fear of big brother, putting in dirty fuel (downloading everything P2P has to offer) Even the most greedy windows geek who was like that 10 years ago has changed, or atleast recomends Autoupdate for clients when the situation allows (not talking about servers here)
It's like the old "My throttle got stuck" excuse. really? turn the key off, or throw it in Neutral and blow the engine! don't risk the lives of others and try and brake against it or get it "unstuck." You work on it AFTER you and others are safe.
Same as a comp really. Lock your firewall down (no in/ out) and boot into safe mode (on win) or recompile, or whatever you gotta do for linux.
You bought the car AS IS w/ no warranty expressed or implied. Neither windows nor linux has a warranty or guarantee, (I know both are waranteed by other companies, when embedded) it's a matter of doing the best you can w/ what you got.
I don't pretentend to be the master of windows security, but if you don't want to lock your doors, install a security system or change your oil, and you don't want to pay me to do it, don't come to me when it breaks or is stolen w/ an empty wallet and a tear in your eye.
because we are just starting to come to the true PC / Console wars. You'll see just this happening as penetration of HD becomes deeper. Right now HD penetration is like 30% (arbitrary #, I don't really know) Once that hits >80% which will be very soon, as TV prices keep coming down (32" 1080p @ costco for $459) PC games will start being developed for TVs. Right now though, most people don't have a PC connected to a TV.
Most/.'ers probably do have a pc connected to a tv. I do, but I don't have an HD tv yet. Mostly because I have a 2048x1536 resolution SGI monitor that some idiot threw away. (P.S. It's great for WoW!) When everyone has an HD TV, AND a home media PC or better, games will go to "console style" but we're not going to be there for 3-8 years (ish).
Same deal too. Showed my best bud how to fly a super cub. Set it up high, hand the controls over. He did great!. Then I placed my semistock stryker up. Got him about 1.5k up, set it to glide and handed him the controller. Had about 40% expo, and told him to move the stick "SLOWLY". He loved it. Then I showed him how to fly at more than 1/2 throttle. 8').
I brought the stryker down, and let him have the cub back. He decided to go all Iceman on a duck. (not a goose though) Unfortunately he crashed and burned just as I was coming back to check on him, I see this plane chasing a bird. He made a sharp turn, then yanked, witch would have been fine on ANY OTHER PLANE, but he basically yanked while his orientation was >90 degrees off horizon.
Dork, he owed me a new fuselodge. $20 later and I put it back in the hands of another aspiring pilot.
Listen, All I'm going to say is this: It's allready been done. The problem is, do you have a LARGE enough place to test it?.
You can put a PZ stryker up weighing 100mph for like $300. Strap a camera to it for another 50-75. Strap a cellphone, and you now have GPS, Comm, Camera, and an O.S.
Strap an Iphone to it, and you've got all the above, and "there's an app for that."
It reminds me of the part in "Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" where he suggests to John that beer can aluminum would be the perfect shim to keep his handlebars from slipping. John rejects the idea of using a beercan on his beemer, and so goes to buy "quality shimstock" which is probably made from beercans.
We shim many things, and I had no clue till I took off the siding of my house, and redid a few doors. Shims are how we make construction look good, and still get it done in a timely manner.
but that's 105 TB on a disk the size of a CD. I don't know about you, but in the Medical field, that's VERY useful. I'm really curious what the read / write speeds are, but there are huge possibilities. The biggest I can think of is disaster recovery backups. No more worrying about multiple servers in multiple locations, just mail Cd's out once a week/month.
Seeing that writes don't have to be fast, reads just need to be at least X for video, this could have numerous applications. Optical can be much better than magnetic for data integrity if made right. This could really help w/ long term storage of medical data which has crazy 7yr, 10yr, and lifetime limits depending on the type of data. It's a huge issue right now, as many medical facillities in the outlying communities have failing systems, and data loss is basically shrugged off because you can't do much about it.
Why I get so many referalls, and repeat customers. (repeat in a good way, not because I didn't fix it right!)
If you treat someone like the Saturday Night Live "Computer Guy," you're only going to get their respect until you walk out the door. If you treat people like people, amazing things can happen.
Once people experience my exceptional service, they try and do things like pawn their neighbors off, tell me who'll pay me the most.
I had one client pay me to build a machine when I told them to "go to Dell" and get one cheaper there! Interesting how that sounds... "go to Dell" but I can't compete at the $900ish price level.
caps key to "hold down" another key.
Wouldn't that be an awesome "autorun" for W (or A as is my asdf preference instead of wasd)
Once Vista64 is set up, it's Effing fast!
I've never been happier w/ a computer. I can alt-tab between multiple 3d apps in seconds! You know hardcore apps like UT3, WoW, and TF2!
8')
I really should have charged that client a LOT more, but it saved them a ton of $, and it was like $40 on e-bay!

Thanks for the insightful post.
It's the classic chicken and egg paradox, but there is always Peggle.

Weighing less than a couple of pounds and flying greater than 100 mph was intended to be inserted between the "up" and "for."
read F27 Stryker How far can I take it thread.

but you can't retroactively design something.
Just as the beemer should have had a smaller space for the handlebars, what do you do when the product is already adopted?
That was the funniest thing I've read on /. in a while. Ty!
when I first post.
I think we all saw this one coming. I'm suprised though that it happened so fast.
Shims work.

Surely it applies to programming as well?
He means Portal (Orange Box), not WoW. 8')

Nah, it's just a Mechanostrider w/ a Carrot (On a stick)
