If you look at the design of the PS2 architecture you'll see that it's a good 5 years ahead of where everybody else is. The PS2 was design for dynamic media applications. (3D Games) This is were you have some small loops of code that process a huge amount of data. (Renedering 3D images) If you look at the PS2 you will see you have a very wide data bus thats connected to a bunch of very fast vector units. (The V1 , V0, Emotion engine) If your a geek you need to read the following links. It's really opened my eyes to the power of the PS2.
PS2 Architecture VS PC ArchitectureEmotion Engine Analysis
I read this on tivocommunity.com a few days ago. Bascially you start a ppp connection over the TiVo's serial port and this allows it to download programming information wihout using the phone line. You can read the whole message here. Very cool stuff.
Thanks for not being too condescending to us uneducated "Americans" who can't figure out what 412,000 square kilometers are. We must be the only savages left that still use miles. Nice touch really.
According to their site they have stopped distributing the program due to technical difficulties. Apparently the thing doesn't work on all Palms.:(
July 7, 2000 Stockholm, Sweden It has come to our attention that Liberty is having some problems with a number of devices (and many devices NOT having problems). Due to this we have decided to stop the download of this application until the problem is fully investigated and a solution is found.

Wait a second doesnt Open Group own Unix trademark
on
UNIX.com On eBay?

If The Open Group owns the registered trademark for Unix then they could easily sue Vannoy Heights Trust (the peeps auction the site off) for domain name squating and get it back for free.
So I guess it's a trick question. The ANSWER is: The Open Group is going to get the domain back for FREE.:)
You can find more info about The Open Group here. And you can learn about what trademarks they own here.
The ACLU is saying that it's impossible to filter the internet but they agrue it's better to filter it than ban offensive content completly.
They want to refine the wording of COPA as not to make it overly broad. The main complaint is what kind of nudity is "harmful to minors". Where does one draw the line?
COPA defines material that is "harmful to minors" as:
[a]ny communication, picture, image, graphic image file, article, recording, writing, or other matter of any kind that is obscene or that -- (A) the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find, taking the material as a whole and with respect to minors, is designed to appeal to, or is designed to pander to, the prurient interest; (B) depicts, describes, or represents, in a manor patently offensive with respect to minors, an actual or simulated sexual act or sexual contact, an actual or simulated normal or perverted sexual act, or a lewd exhibition of the genitals or post-pubescent female breast; and (C) taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors.
As you can see this gives the government sweeping power in what they can ban. I think it's insane when our government tell us what "lacks serious literary" value, etc etc. You can get the whole motion here.
I'm soooooo happy that in Slashdot's commentary they talk about the burning sounds of gifs. Hmmm. I kind of recall that on the "Burn your gif day" they still used gifs. If you are going to preach about something PLEASE do as your preach. People will have a bit more faith in you this way.:P
It's a great idea that you can now vote online. The process looks simple. You type in a pin number that they sent to you a few weeks earlier, cast your vote, and your all set.
I see one big problem with this. Aren't elections suppose to be annoymous? Can't they simply track your voting record by cross-referencing it with your pin number?
Another thing that worries me about this is that the pages don't look SECURE. When IE is on a secure page the icon of a webpage turns golden. They have a bunch of screen-shots and the icon doesn't look golden. You can grab them here. Wouldn't this be a little problem? Hmmmm.
600 MHz x86 compatible CPU Custom 3-D NVIDIA graphics processor 64 MB of RAM (unified memory architecture) Custom 3-D audio processor 8GB hard drive 4X DVD drive with movie playback Four game controller ports Expansion port Proprietary A/V connector 100 MBps Ethernet
All this for $299 USD I think the coolest thing that the X-Box has going for it is the badass 3D support (Comeon NVDA is pretty damn cool) and the 100 MBps Ethernet. It looks like this puppy is going to be broadband ready with this fast network port. If the price is cheap enough these thing could make decent Linux web servers or firewalls. I'm sure M$ would love that.:) (I'm sure the would need some more ram tho)
There is also a mpg demo of the 3D capabilities of the x-box. It's a demo of mech. You can grab it here for MPEG and here for QT4
I was wondering if anybody has any of these scripts setup? I always read about them but the only things that I can find are Win32 clients that do this.
Also, what if I'm sniping on multiple auctions. (Let's say 100) What would be the easiest way to do this? Maybe using crontab, but that doesn't support second accuracy. I guess coding a scheduler in Java is probably the best way to go.
If you read slashdot at Score >= 1 then you'll be fine. You'll never see another troll again. The problem with slashdot is that there isn't enough good moderation. The only things that seem to get moderated up are "Funny" comments. A Slashdot article used to have 5-10 insightful comments. What we need are more (active) knowledgeable moderators.
It would be nice if Slashdot also implemented some type of spam filter. This would get ride of the anoyances that we have been having. (Not a change to the moderation system) For example:
Only let in 10 comments from one IP for minute. (If your behind a proxy you might be out of luck) This way it would make in unreasonable for anybody to try spamming slashdot.
Or you could try to prosecute the person who is doing this. And then run a slashdot article on that. I don't think you'd get many more trolls after that.:)
CNet had an article about a company called Pine that is comming out with a portable cd player that can play the mp3s from a CD. The CNET article is here: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-114511.html?t ag=st.cn.1.
The only problem with the Pine SM-200C is that it's still not out. You can check out the company web site at: http://www.pineusa.com/mp3-cd.htm

I remember seeing something this crazy on TV before(Dateline I think). A couple in Montana started selling "Montana Wool" sweaters. Little did they know there is fashion designer by the same name. They got sued for a huge amount. I think the settlement was they had to change the name to "Made in Montana" or something dorky like that.
There was also a case in which the Polo shit people sued a California Polo club because they were selling shirts with a Polo horse on it. (Of course the shirt also said "Cali. Polo Club", so there was no mistaking it for the real think) I guess people just need to get good layers. There are way to many greedy/stupid people out there.
I still don't think this is on the same level of EToys/EToy. I can't believe EToys is that damn stupid. Arg. I'm still boycotting those bastards.

With a 100MBps ethernet port you can hook up any type of broadband. Cable, DSL, whatever you like.
Get the feel specs at Microsoft's X-Box site

That is the funniest thing is read in a while. I want one.
